October 10, 20195 yr Given that the ex-Tories and the Lib Dems have said they would not back a Corbyn-led government, various other names such as Ken Clarke, Harriet Harman and Margaret Beckett have been suggested as alternatives. The logic is that it is better to have someone who has no ambition to stay in the job in the long term and would not be aiming to win an election as PM. So far, Labour are proving reluctant to back that idea. We don't need a GNU or interim PM as we already have a PM. Maybe Labour will table a VONC once there's an extension. I hope there is an early election because it'll mean Corbyn will go when he loses. Edited October 10, 20195 yr by Common Sense
October 10, 20195 yr We nwed an interim pm as the unelectwd one and his unwlwctwd beaurocrat are not fit for purpose. Out out out!!!
October 10, 20195 yr Author We nwed an interim pm as the unelectwd one and his unwlwctwd beaurocrat are not fit for purpose. Out out out!!! Err, you do realise that whoever replaced him would be just as unelected - even more so in fact!
October 10, 20195 yr Unelected and directly working with the wishes of the House to find a way out of the impasse rather than being unelected and squatting in number 10, never winning a single vote in Parliament, until such time has come as there is no more time.
October 29, 20195 yr Author It looks likely we'll finally be getting our wish... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-76...s-election.html Boris Johnson gets his Christmas wish! Jubilant PM heads to the Commons to seal date for snap election after Jeremy Corbyn U-turn - as MPs squabble over which day in December poll will be held Prime Minister has been demanding MPs agree to a pre-Christmas election Jeremy Corbyn blocked attempt to trigger an election for December 12 last night But Labour leader caved in this morning and will now whip MPs to back a poll PM had pushed legislation that could win with Lib Dem and SNP backing alone Still arguments over whether to hold a snap poll on December 12 or December 9
October 29, 20195 yr I don't understand why Corbyn caved, like, at all?? I'm guessing favourable insider polling but w/e. Should have pushed for votes for 16 y/old and above.
October 29, 20195 yr I’m super pro franchise extension, but doing it in an afternoon for an election in 6 weeks time is dicey as f***. That’s not enough time to do anything with the electoral roll outside of Scotland where the franchise was already extended to include EU nationals and 16/17 year olds in non-Westminster controlled votes. We risk creating a massive voting scandal with people not being properly registered
October 29, 20195 yr With individual online registration it should be possible to get 16- and 17-year-olds registered in time. The biggest problem would be people who turn 16 just before polling day and have not yet been issued their NI card as they won't be able to enter their NI number. That is probably a good reason not to do it for this election. As a matter of interest, did the inclusion of 16- and 17-year-olds in Scotland lead to NI cards being sent out earlier to avoid this issue?

You don’t need an NI number to register if you don’t yet have one. You can go on the electoral roll from 14 years old up here because of the expanded franchise. The laws were passed in 2015 and used at Holyrood at 2016 election and it seems to have gone alright so far. Not sure what other requirements are in place though.
October 29, 20195 yr Sounds like we'll have an election. Boris Johnson's December 12 election plan has cleared its first hurdle as MPs backed it without a formal vote. They will continue to debate and vote later on amendments, including a Labour proposal to change the date to 9 December. The prime minister can only hold an election with the support of MPs - who have blocked it three times. Efforts by opposition MPs to lower the voting age to 16 and allow EU nationals to take part have failed. Proposed changes to the PM's early election bill to extend voting rights were not selected for debate by the Deputy Speaker despite enjoying cross-party support. We risk creating a massive voting scandal with people not being properly registered It's comical how the government doesn't think six weeks is enough time to register them, which might well be true, but they were completely fine with just two days to debate and decide on the withdrawal agreement. Equally comical watching Tories complain about the prospect of them getting a vote, despite 16 and 17 year-olds being able to vote in the Conservative leadership election. October 29, 20195 yr So has it extended to 16 and 17 yos now? Not it hasn't. Thankfully. They're not mature enough to vote. Edited October 29, 20195 yr by Freddie Kruger

A lot of what they’re saying about insufficient time to push this bill through for a 9th of Dec election is equally as funny given the timetable for the WAB
October 29, 20195 yr Not it hasn't. Thankfully. They're not mature enough to vote. As was pointed out above, apparently they were mature enough to vote in the Conservative leadership election...

October 29, 20195 yr I just really don't understand this move at all. It gives Bojo two massive victories, brexshit general election plus when students are moving for hols AND CAN'T VOTE!!! They didn't even push for votes for 16 and 17 y/os. Makes no sense at all.
