08. All You Need Is Love (1967) / Magical Mystery Tour + Yellow Submarine

6/19 votes

Departing next in 8th place is 'All You Need Is Love'! It was released in 1967 with 'Baby You're A Rich Man' as its B-side. It would appear on not one but two Beatles soundtrack projects! It featured on the U.S. edition of 'Magical Mystery Tour' (we got the EP version in the U.K.) and also made the cut for 'Yellow Submarine'. This song came about because The Beatles were chosen as Britain's representatives for 'Our World' - the first live global television link ever. It attracted a huge audience of 400 million people from 25 countries. The group were told to write a song using "basic English" and with a message that could be understood by everyone. So the simple, hopeful and repetitive lyrics, written by John Lennon, were born. 'All You Need Is Love' captures the utopian feel of the famous 'Summer of Love' gathering in San Francisco that had occurred in 1967.

The song is interesting for both its opening and closing moments, as it begins with a portion of the French national anthem and closes with the group referencing their own song 'She Loves You'. George Martin produced 'All You Need Is Love' in an orchestral way, which he'd explore a lot more elsewhere on the 'Yellow Submarine' soundtrack. It was yet another smash hit in their repertoire - topping the U.K. singles chart for three weeks and also hitting #1 in the U.S. for a week. It may be time for 'All You Need Is Love' to depart, but both 'Penny Lane' and 'Hello, Goodbye' continue to represent the U.S. edition of 'Magical Mystery Tour'.

'All You Need Is Love' would've been next in line for me so not too gutting a loss. Voting for 'Let It Be' again!

Still going with Penny Lane, Seems I'm alone here but I really don't think this measures up to what's left at all!

All You Need is Love is wonderful, always makes me feel all warm inside

Gone for 'Ticket To Ride' again - so far 'Hello, Goodbye' looking like it's up for the chop with 4 votes while 5 other songs have 1 vote each
Do you think we'll get this done this year Jade? I think maybe not quite!
