So it's unlucky #2 for Harry for the second time around, after his self-titled debut also ended up at #2 in 2017's EOY countdown! In this case, Fine Line suffers from some unlucky timing. It came out a couple of weeks before the end of the year, leaving me much less time to make memories with it and familiarise myself with it compared to Greyson's album. However, I certainly made the most of those 2 weeks. I played the album so much, leading to Harry occupying a record seven songs in my top 10 during the week of release, and Fine Line had the biggest week at #1 of the year of course. I also attended Harry's pop-up shop in London, where I saw him on a balcony and he waved at me!!!! I also managed to get a ticket to his one-off show at the Electric Ballroom the day after - hearing the album live so soon after release was amazing and really helped me fall in love with it.

In my opinion, there's not a weak song on here, and it's a massive step up from the debut (which I still very much enjoyed). Harry knows who he wants to be as an artist now and he's making the music he truly loves. He's forging his own path, being the person he wants to be, and that's the Harry Styles that I've loved since 2010. Falling is Harry at his most raw and vulnerable, while Treat People With Kindness sees Harry living up to the slogan he's promoted ever since 2017. Every song has its place on the album, and that's what makes it such a positive listen. It's a special album and one I can tell will continue to define my 2020.

Greyson Chance has been on my radar since 2011. His debut album, Hold On 'Til the Night, was released when he was only 13 years old (and he's just a matter of months younger than me!), and I absolutely loved it. In fact, I still do - it's full of great tracks and it's going to perform well in my End of Decade album countdown later on! Weirdly though, Greyson took eight years to properly follow it up. Two EPs and a selection of standalone singles filled the gap, but portraits finally arrived in 2019, with Greyson a new man. Now 21 years old, Greyson found the person that he is. Embracing his sexuality (he came out as gay a couple of years ago) and not shying away from the depressing moments of the relationships he's felt, portraits basically feels like it's from a different artist to the one who released Hold On 'Til the Night. In fact, it may as well have been, and it's easy to see why Greyson considers portraits to be his debut.

The album kicks off with lead single shut up, which became Greyson's first #1 single in my chart in seven years (since Sunshine & City Lights in late 2012). The track is one of the happiest on the album, alongside dreamy friendship anthem yours and the incredibly sexy black on black. west texas sees Greyson talking about his family life, and specifically the way his mother raised him - it makes for an emotional, raw track, much like the duo of seasons nineteen (an update of Greyson's 2017 single Seasons) and timekeeper, which seamlessly flow into each other with the use of British train announcements. The entire project is so well thought out, and it's no surprise that every song charted in my top 40 after the double-whammy of me attending both of Greyson's London shows in October (minus the interludes). It was my first time seeing him live, and I met him!!

Ultimately, portraits is an album that I know I will forever be able to relate to. It's raw, personal and was created with no expectations on Greyson's behalf or my own. It surpassed everything I expected and it put Greyson Chance firmly back on the map, for me at least. I can't wait to see what the future holds for him, because if portraits is any indicator, it's going to be pretty damn bright.

2019: Points Charts

My points charts are based on positions in my personal chart over the year - my final EOY positions are not based on these, though they are interesting to look at nonetheless I think!

Singles

1 718 Greyson Chance - shut up [01]

27 296 Why Don't We - I Still Do [01]

28 292 Ed Sheeran feat. Camila Cabello & Cardi B - South of the Border [03]

29 284 Ariana Grande - 7 rings [01]

30 282 Why Don't We - Unbelievable [01]

31 282 Taylor Swift feat. Shawn Mendes - Lover [05]

32 281 Selena Gomez - Lose You to Love Me [01]

33 277 Ruel - Free Time [04]

34 273 Katy Perry - Never Really Over [02]

35 270 Isac Elliot - Waiting Game [01]

36 269 Sofía Reyes feat. Rita Ora & Anitta - R.I.P. [01]

37 268 Mark Ronson feat. Camila Cabello - Find U Again [03]

38 267 Ulrik Munther - Shine a Light [07]

39 265 Oscar Enestad - Sign of My Love [01]

40 262 Why Don't We - Come to Brazil [01]

Of course, I've yet to count down the singles so I can't comment on how accurate this is, but we have two VERY clear leaders there, with Greyson Chance just inching ahead of Kygo & Whitney! Christmas songs see a good showing because this points chart actually includes TWO Decembers, owing to the fact I've shifted my EOY back a bit so it covers a full calendar year now. Bea Miller nabs the highest non-#1 with it's not u it's me, as high as #3! Highest non-top 5 is Lewis Blissett's Sick Thoughts, which peaked at #9 and finds itself at #24 here.

Albums: 2019

1 [01] 1229 Greyson Chance - portraits [01]

2 [04] 775 Matteo Markus Bok - Cruisin' [01]

3 [05] 470 Ruel - Free Time - EP [01]

4 [07] 364 Taylor Swift - Lover [01]

5 [09] 290 Ariana Grande - thank u next [01]

6 [10] 249 MARINA - LOVE + FEAR [01]

7 [12] 244 Kylie Minogue - Step Back In Time: The Definitive Collection [01]

8 [13] 191 Ashley Tisdale - Symptoms [01]

9 [15] 173 Avril Lavigne - Head Above Water [01]

10 [16] 167 Andreas Wijk - Season 1 [Episode 01-14] [01]

For record, the square bracketed number is the position in the combined album list (not separated by age). Greyson of course clears the way with portraits, and it's worth noting there's no Harry Styles, obviously owing to how new his album is. Ruel's Free Time EP sits very comfortably in the top 3 as well, having never left my album chart top 5 since release. Kylie's Step Back In Time collection also appears here, as does Avril's Head Above Water, meaning that Hunter Hayes and Camila Cabello also don't feature here (Hunter's not far off, and Camila's album is only one week older than Harry's...!).

Albums: Pre-2019

1 [02] 1189 Alec Benjamin - Narrated for You [01]

2 [03] 858 Rita Ora - Phoenix [01]

3 [06] 466 Why Don't We - 8 Letters [01]

4 [08] 312 Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You: The Best of Whitney Houston [01]

5 [11] 247 Troye Sivan - Bloom [01]

6 [14] 182 Ruel - Ready - EP [01]

7 [17] 145 Spice Girls - Greatest Hits [01]

8 [19] 133 Casey Lowry - Beach Blue - EP [02]

9 [20] 130 Anne-Marie - Speak Your Mind [01]

10 [24] 119 Céline Dion - My Love: Essential Collection [02]

Alec Benjamin put in a strong bid for the overall top album, with an amazingly strong showing for 2018 carry-over Narrated for You. He and Rita benefit strongly from their albums being released close to the end of the year, meaning they had most of their chart runs this year. Last year's EOY #1 from Why Don't We has another strong showing this year too! Greatest hits albums feature for Whitney Houston, Spice Girls and Céline Dion, in a year heavily dominated by hits collections topping my singles chart,

1 718 Greyson Chance - shut up [01]

You'd like ha new single shut up

:kink:

Fantastic to see portraits as your #1 album of the year  I'm glad I gave it a chance after your recommendation... one of my favourite discoveries of 2019! I'd say Yours has settled as my favourite song of his, and I can't help but feel Black on Black was a missed opportunity (at least in terms of being worthy of a video!)

291 Lauren Aquilina - If Looks Could Kill | 15-31-x

292 Avicii feat. Aloe Blacc - SOS | 15-38-x

293 RIKA - On My Way | 30-34-x-24-32-x

294 Zedd & Kehlani - Good Thing | 13-28-x

295 Marcus & Martinus - Pocket Dial | 20-x

296 Ella Henderson - Glorious | 15-34-x

297 James Arthur & Anne-Marie - Rewrite the Stars | 29-25-30-20-19-19-26-x

298 Kylie Minogue - New York City | 15-38-x

299 Tadhg Daly - Stuck In the Middle | 19-32-x

300 Della Casa, Dakota & Ryan Lawrie - Secreto | 16-32-x

I'm gonna go through the lower sections in particular quite quickly as I've got an End of Decade countdown to do as well, but here's a selection of (mostly) top 20 hits that didn't see much longevity! Rewrite the Stars is an exception but it's not really a song I go back to. Avicii provides the second and final chart hit of the section with posthumous single SOS. RIKA's On My Way only peaked at #24 after I saw her live supporting Zak Abel in March, but the track's stuck with me enough for it to make a strong enough impact months down the line!

281 Nykki - No Cry | 19-35-x

282 SG Lewis feat. Ruel - Flames | 20-25-34-x

283 Ciara - Thinkin Bout You | 20-36-x

284 New Hope Club - Love Again | 18-x

285 Joel Adams - A Big World | 14-32-x

286 Niall Horan - Put a Little Love On Me | 14-39-x

287 Kate Nash - Bad Lieutenant | 17-21-x

288 MJ Cole & Freya Ridings - Waking Up | 19-29-x

289 Lost Kings - FU4E | 14-33-x

290 Jax Jones & Years & Years - Play | 29-12-17-32-x

Jax Jones kicks off another mostly non-commercial section! Lauren Aquilina already makes a second appearance, though she's uncredited as the vocalist on FU4E (F**k You For Everything) by Lost Kings. Established artists Kate Nash, Niall Horan and Ciara all feature in this section alongside newbies (to my chart anyway) SG Lewis and Nykki, while Joel Adams shows up for the first of three appearances with A Big World.

Great to see Thank U, Next so high up in your album chart. I certainly agree that is sounds a whole lot more cohesive than Sweetener. :D

272 Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber - I Don't Care | 10-29-39-x

273 Ariana Grande - imagine | 14-33-x

274 Julia Michaels feat. Selena Gomez - Anxiety | 12-25-x

275 Pitbull feat. Rhea - Ocean to Ocean | 18-27-37-39-x

277 Alan Walker, Sabrina Carpenter & Farruko - On My Way | 18-22-36-x

278 Zara Larsson - Don't Worry Bout Me | 18-29-x

279 PRETTYMUCH - Jello | 20-31-31-35-x

280 Hunter Hayes - One Good Reason | 28-25-34-x

A section packed full of established names, we actually lose our first top 10 in this section courtesy of Ed Sheeran's I Don't Care. It was quite lucky to even make the top 10, as even though I like the song, it's not very replayable for me. Hunter Hayes manages to creep in with One Good Reason, even though it only peaked at #25 - the lowest peaking track in this countdown!

261 The Vamps - Missing You | 19-31-x-17-32-x

262 Topic, Vigiland & Christopher - Let Us Love | 27-20-31-x

263 JP Cooper & Astrid S - Sing It With Me | 20-x

264 Boy In Space & unheard - Cold | 19-24-40-x

265 Hearts & Colors - LA On a Saturday Night | 27-19-28-x

266 Alfie Templeman - Stop Thinking (About Me) | 20-24-29-35-x

267 Y2K & bbno$ - Lalala | 39-33-19-26-x

268 Lizzo feat. Missy Elliott - Tempo | 20-23-x

269 Lennon Stella - BITCH (takes one to know one) | 15-22-x

270 Four of Diamonds - Walk Away | 10-25-x

We lose another top 10 from Four of Diamonds, who actually managed their second top 10 hit in a busy week but further busy weeks during May and June quickly dispatched it. Breakthrough hits from Lennon Stella, Y2K, Alfie Templeman and Hearts & Colors all feature here alongside established artist The Vamps and the first track from one of my favourite 2019 discoveries, Boy In Space.

284 New Hope Club - Love Again | 18-x

Funny to see this quite low on your EOY, it had a fairly massive chart run on mine last year, so is likely to be fairly high :D

Faves so far

267 Y2K & bbno$ - Lalala *.*

277 Alan Walker, Sabrina Carpenter & Farruko - On My Way although the song really could do without Farruko being on i!

278 Zara Larsson - Don't Worry Bout Me my fave of Zara's recent tracks, shame it had to underperform so much

288 MJ Cole & Freya Ridings - Waking Up beautiful track and one that'll be in my top 50

290 Jax Jones & Years & Years - Play another good tune from Jax, he's been all hit for me aside from 'Harder'

292 Avicii feat. Aloe Blacc - SOS  this giving him one final big smash hit was great to see, although not one of my absolute faves of his (it'll still feature very high up my chart though)

258 Harry Styles - Fine Line | 16-x

259 Cardi B - Press | 15-35-x

260 Nina Nesbitt - Colder | 10-23-40-x

More top 10 hits drop out now from Nina Nesbitt, Alexander Stewart, and of course, the return of the Sugababes on DJ Spoony's cover of Flowers. Harry Styles makes his first appearance of eight with the album's title track, while another Boy In Space track pops up in the form of Drown.

249 Reed Deming - Silver Lining | 21-28-x

250 Nina Nesbitt - Black & Blue | 14-24-x

And yet another top 10 from Felix Sandman, his first appearance of four. Non-top 20 hits from Madison Beer and Reed Deming manage to slide in impressively high, leaving just one non-top 20 left in the countdown! Another couple of Nina Nesbitt top 20 hits drop out, while we also lose chart hits from Billie Eilish and Jonas Blue.

Don't Worry Bout Me was ok but Zara's gone really off the boil for me since Lush Life/Ain't My Fault.

Imagine & Boyfriend are two good tracks from Ariana and will feature very high in my countdown even if they are nowhere near her absolute best.

Lalala is one of my faves of the year. The video really made it hit me for some reason.

Nice to see SOS making it in, my favourite Top 40 hit this year, a really fab song from Avicii. On My Way, All Day and What I Like About You are favourites from this section as well.

Giving If Looks Could Kill a listen, I was curious to see if it was a Camera Obscura cover but alas no :P Quite a funky track nonetheless!

231 Dan + Shay & Justin Bieber - 10,000 Hours | 14-24-34-x

232 Billie Eilish - bury a friend | 39-18-14-23-x

233 AJ Tracey - Ladbroke Grove | 38-x-26-16-16-21-34-x

234 FELIX SANDMAN - MISS YOU LIKE CRAZY | 19-28-37-x

235 Declan McKenna - British Bombs | 10-20-32-x

236 Sam Smith - How Do You Sleep? | 19-24-25-37-x

237 Charlie Puth - I Warned Myself | 10-18-35-x

238 Lana Del Rey - Doin' Time | 17-19-30-x

239 KIAN - Waiting | 31-8-20-32-x

240 LÉON - You and I | 17-20-26-x

LÉON scored her first two hits in my chart this year, both of which peaked at #17 interestingly! Grey collaboration Want You Back is already out, and You and I finishes at a respectable #240. KIAN also scored his debut hit after I saw him supporting Conan Gray, with Australian hit Waiting peaking at #8. A selection of established artists mostly cover the rest of the section, though AJ Tracey notably sticks out. Ladbroke Grove did impressively well in my chart for a hip-hop track, and ends up at a very respectable #233! It's his sole hit in my chart as things stand. Justin Bieber also helped Dan + Shay nab their first hit with 10,000 Hours, though I did enjoy their song 19 You & Me from a few years ago. Sam Smith scored their best-performing track since sole top 10 I'm Not the Only One while Charlie Puth's comeback ended up as a bit of a damp squib. I liked I Warned Myself more than most but #10 for his comeback is rather underwhelming! We also have Declan McKenna's political statement of British Bombs, one of my most interesting top 10 hits of the year undoubtedly, while Billie Eilish scored a climber in bury a friend, a track which I certainly grew to enjoy after being a little scared on first listen

221 Mahmood & Isac Elliot - Soldi | 9-35-x

222 AJ Mitchell feat. Ava Max - Slow Dance | 10-21-26-25-34-x

223 Why Don't We - Don't Change | 10-15-23-33-x

224 Sam Feldt feat. RANI - Post Malone | 12-18-28-x

225 No Love Lost - All or Nothing | 13-22-x

226 Maren Morris - GIRL | 27-20-13-22-31-x

227 Cardi B & Bruno Mars - Please Me | 16-29-36-31-25-12-21-x

228 Jax Jones & Bebe Rexha - Harder | 10-18-x

229 Jorja Smith feat. Burna Boy - Be Honest | 12-22-34-x

230 Anna Bergendahl - Home | 23-x

The highest non-top 20 track surprisingly goes to Anna Bergendahl, best known for Eurovision and Melodifestivalen. Her Melfest track Ashes to Ashes doesn't feature, but follow-up single Home does. It's a track I've revisited a lot despite its low peak, with its impressive play count not concentrated to just one week! Jorja Smith assisted Burna Boy in achieving his first hit, and her second-highest peaking track after #7 hit Blue Lights. No Love Lost also iconically score their first hit with X Factor performance All or Nothing, an original track from the Love Islander quartet *_* Sam Feldt scored a second hit with the namedropping guilty pleasure of Post Malone, though actual Post Malone does finish higher with one song! AJ Mitchell and Why Don't We both make their first appearances of several, the latter most notably featuring ten times with their 2019 releases. Mahmood's Soldi marks the first Eurovision song to appear, with a little help from a veteran of my chart, Isac Elliot, who pops up four times across this year's countdown.
