don't really follow your logic, normal non-urban songs charting are doing so cos of playlists, there is not gonna be 50,000 people on a given day searching for Joni's River, totally impossible

I didn’t say that 50,000 people would be searching for ‘River’ but the fact that it’s the UK #1 and has been played by R2 I would have thought more people would have sought the song by searching for River etc., added to the fact you need a handful of sales to chart on iTunes I’m just surprised the original is not higher (Just the same as in the past when people have released cover versions and the original gets a decent boost).

 

I’m not bothered either way - I’m not a fan of Ellie, Joni or River, just struck me as odd that people that don’t have Amazon haven’t gone after the original more.

Or maybe people hearing Ellie's version on Radio 2 are unfamiliar with the original?

 

Possibly (I was unaware of the original), I guess I just expected it to have more of a boost from people searching ‘River’ etc., in other platforms.

I downloaded about 40 songs from iTunes earlier, mostly random little known songs that I've liked this year, to put on my end of year playlist. One of them, Monster by Dodie, has shown up at No.1113.

 

As that appeared but none of the others did, I'm guessing it takes only two sales to crack the top 1,500 now, as I can feasibly believe that another person downloaded that song today but would be surprised if any more than that did.

Or maybe people hearing Ellie's version on Radio 2 are unfamiliar with the original? Also I believe it made it to the 40s but is of course dropping down now Christmas is over.

 

The promo seemingly has been near entirely limited to pushing the song on Amazon itself too, aside from R2 playlist support, so the average iTunes/Spotify user isn't going to be aware of it.

 

I was quite surprised Radio 1 didn't support it.

R1 for whatever reason do not playlist new Christmas songs so that was never going to happen for her.
