Any deaths are horrible but, minor positive is that it is 80 lower than Italy was at same stage, hopefully relieving those direct comparisons we were seeing.

One of the news people asking questions though at the daily briefing by Boris and the health experts said the UK's death rate was higher than Italy at the same stage

I don’t know the full specifics but going on a chart that’s doing the rounds on social media that had us at 14 days behind Italy, near enough the same day for day resulting in this:

This is worrying:

the following day for Italy was 366 deaths

Weird decision over here to close all the gyms but leave bars, restaurants and other stores including shopping malls as well as metro open. :|

Weird indeed...as if whole Russia goes to gym?!!!

I’m still in work tomorrow and I just don’t understand why.

I work for a clothing brand and like there’s no retail shops open I work in an office. Tbh I think by a few days I’ll end up isolating. I can’t really work from home with my job as I don’t have the equipment to do so. In a way it’s been a blessing being at work but I’m feeling scared now. Every days last week there was less people there!

Do you guys think the messaging from Boris is confusing? I do. I have my ma saying "well if it was that serious the government would say so in stronger terms"

I just think he’s an incompetent communicator and a strong communicator is what you really, really need at a time like this. He’s a blatherer which just confuses the message.

I don't know if it's confusing but it's completely possible that certain things (ex. you can still go outside and go sunbathe in the park alone, even if you don't particularly need to) will only be valid for a day or two longer so what's the point in reiterating such a temporary message before a longer term move to total confinement?

yes that's correct, and judging by the tosspots out in hordes in the sunshine today, and the twats on social media insisting that's it's just a bad flu and only the elderly and the weak should be self-isolating, it's going to be just as bad here. China's graph OTOH shows what can be done with an effective response to cut off those escalating peaks.

My little message for the selfish: For the avoidance of doubt, perfectly healthy doctors and nurses dont die of the flu, lying unable to breathe coughing up pink gunk and needing to be on ventilators that aren't there. That's more like pneumonia. Having pneumonia is a complete f***er, I know. I've had bad flu many times and it's not the same at all.

people who have asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes and the like are not "underlying condition oh they would have died from flu anyway" virtually on their death-beds as some would have you believe. Anyone who deliberately ignores advice and thinks it's OK to spread a fatal disease because they don;t care about other people need to be called out for what they are.

1% death rate, 7.7 billion in the world, I make that 77 million dead if left to it's own devices.

Re: Boris, he's being led by Dominic Cuntings who wants everyone to catch it and let whoever dies die so that industry and profitability dont get hit again in the autumn/winter by another round of the virus. Rich people concerned about money and not remotely concerned about people. That's the type involved in running the UK, the USA and Russia, currently.

An 18 year old has been amongst the confirmed deaths in the UK, one that had an underlying health condition, but still that’s by far the youngest one yet :(

One would hope that would make people take it seriously, utterly ridiculous how busy some parts of London are :/ it really is just selfishness and arrogance at this stage.

Getting the right message across isn't particularly easy but this government's efforts have been woeful. The fact that they performed a major U-turn this week doesn't help.

There are two major messages the government (aided by the media) need to get across. The first is that there is plenty of food etc. to go round as long as people are sensible. The second is the reason why we all need to take this seriously. Yes, the vast majority people who get it will survive. Most of them will only experience mild symptoms. However, some will need hospital treatment. That is OK if only a few thousand people across the country have it at any one time. It is not OK if hundreds of thousands (or even a million or more) have it at the same time. The NHS simply will not be able to cope. That would still be true even without the cuts of the last decade. The government doesn't seem to have made any real effort to get that second message across.

The government's task is not helped by the fact that so many people simply don't trust Boris Johnson. His statement about "turning the tide" within twelve weeks simply adds to that mistrust. When he was asked about a timescale, he should have been honest enough to admit that he couldn't give an answer. Of course, you could also criticise the journalist for asking such an impossible question in the first place. Technically, he may be right about the twelve weeks in that the virus may have reached its peak by then. However, many will have interpreted it as meaning that things will be close to normal by then. Much as I'd love that to be the case, the chances of it happening are very slim.

Well, for all of us who were worried that we'd all gain lots of weight as a result of the social isolation, that's some positive news.

my favourite burger place in soton has finally announced home delivery so opposite for me !!

That's awful. I thought people in their 40s and 50s dying from it was shocking enough.

Let that be a warning to a. young people who don't care about the virus and b. the UK government who should have done more such as banning flights to Italy earlier and introducing social distancing earlier. They can still do something which is

enforced lockdown right now

NO ENFORCED LOCKDOWN!!

You ate showing a bit og an authoritarian streak the snake!

What do you suggest then, Michael?

Nando's has closed according to their facebook post now.

Odd, it is a restaurant, so I assumed they had closed already, unless it was only open for deliveries.
