April 24, 20205 yr https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/t...-the-uk__29564/ Top 10 can be seen here.
April 24, 20205 yr Bit of an odd list due them almost all having circumstances around their release boosting their popularity. Nonetheless it is a shame there are no female artists in that list (obviously not including Kelly Osbourne). I am guessing Cher is only just outside this with Believe.
April 25, 20205 yr Bit of an odd list due them almost all having circumstances around their release boosting their popularity. Nonetheless it is a shame there are no female artists in that list (obviously not including Kelly Osbourne). I am guessing Cher is only just outside this with Believe. Agreed, it's not like they defied the odds of reaching #1 as an older artist in the way Cher did with 'Believe'. She was indeed 52 at the time which made her the oldest female to reach #1 in the UK singles. I'm guessing Madonna could be second, who was 49 when '4 Minutes' reached #1.
April 25, 20205 yr Let bananarama be next, would love them to have a number 1 which they have yet to achieve in both the singles and album chart.
April 25, 20205 yr It's surprising that most of these are quite recent. Almost all of them are 1999 onwards.
April 25, 20205 yr It’s really odd looking back that 52 year old Cher got to no.1 just by releasing her latest single. At the time it seemed completely normal as older artists would often feature in the top 10.
April 25, 20205 yr Never realised Frank Skinner was that much older than David Baddiel (who was 54 when 3 Lions was last #1). Ian Broudie was 59 and, as the Lightning Seeds in just about all but name, should probably count for this list too.
April 25, 20205 yr It’s really odd looking back that 52 year old Cher got to no.1 just by releasing her latest single. At the time it seemed completely normal as older artists would often feature in the top 10. It wasn't "just her latest single" though, it was completely different to anything she'd done before and the vocoder thing was new and innovative at the time. I actually remember thinking the first time I heard it that it sounded like a number one single.
April 25, 20205 yr Nonetheless it is a shame there are no female artists in that list (obviously not including Kelly Osbourne). I am guessing Cher is only just outside this with Believe. I wonder if when you take novelty/charity songs out of the equation, would the top 10 then be much more mixed? (If you consider Cher and Madonna as examples)
April 25, 20205 yr I think the point is that 'Believe' wasn't a charity single, wasn't associated with an outside sporting event, wasn't even an old recording revived or reworked, it was just a normal single by a popular act, selling on its own merits (and to her existing fans of course).
April 25, 20205 yr The point is certainly that it wasn’t propelled to no.1 by anything other than its merit. The fact is, 20 years ago it wasn’t uncommon to see older artists near the top of the chart so no one really noticed Cher’s age when she went to no.1. If Kylie went to no.1 in a months time when she will be the same age as Cher was, it will be much more notable because artists that age just don’t get a look in these days. Even before Believe, Cher was having plenty of hits over the age of 40.
April 25, 20205 yr I’m not sure Frank Skinner should be included here because “Baddiel & Skinner” are a chart act IMO - so he cannot he treated as a solo act. Otherwise individuals who participate within groups could be included - not just Ian Broudie but John Craven who was 74 when the Children in Need “Wake Me Up” song reached #1
