At least it's a little bit more inspired than Allardyce, Parde, Pulis, Hughes et al. Let's not forget he was a Terry slip away from winning the CL. Terry Slip > Gerrard Slip

Well Steve Bruce can pretty much be lumped in with the above names...

Sam Allardyce says he turned down the chance to return to Newcastle United as the club's manager.

Allardyce was in charge of the Magpies from 2007 to 2008 and was considered as a replacement for Rafael Benitez, who left the club at the end of June.

Benitez departed after his contract expired, saying the Premier League club "did not share his vision".

"I was very flattered that I was considered but it's that thing - don't go back," Allardyce told Talksport.

"It never got to the type of talks people are suggesting but it wasn't for me. I politely said no."

I can't believe there's only 2 weeks to go until the new Premier League season starts again! 9 months of all kinds of emotions and drama are nearly on their way. At least from a Man United perspective we've had a better pre-season than this time last year but we have done far too little in the transfer window to really bring a huge sense of optimism.
I know was think that today - the charity shield and EFL start next weekend. Love this time of year, summer ends quick for me once the football season starts lol

BT Sport have used data from Google, Opta & Squawka to predict the outcomes of the Premier League, Champions League and the Europa League. They have made a script for the new season and have predicted Manchester City to win the Premier League with 94 points and Chelsea to be top of the table at Christmas. They think Tottenham will beat Manchester United in the Europa League final and have also predicted Real Madrid to win the Champions League "because Zinedine Zidane has never failed to win the Champions League as a manager"

You can see the scripts for each team in the Premier League and also for Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid & Juventus. It will be interesting to compare at the end of the season how accurate this is going to be.

Manchester City won the Community Shield after beaten Liverpool 5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1 in 90 minutes. Both teams had spells during the match where they had more of the opportunities, I've heard some people say that the better team lost but in my opinion it was quite an even match.

This season is the first season where I have little interest in the title race because I can't imagine there being much change to how things have been in the two most recent seasons. I think it will be a more clear cut victory for Manchester City this time but not on the 2017/18 levels. For me Aside from how Manchester United do it's the battle to avoid relegation that will be the most entertaining aspect of the league this season.

It was a good game, very even between both teams. I thought we caused them more problems rather than they caused us more problems, but it was just a glorified pre-season friendly. No-one really cares who wins. Liverpool have had such a disjointed pre-season so it was really pleasing to see us play well. Walker's bicycle kick off the line was defending of the highest quality. Only thing is both Liverpool and Man City are on another level to the other teams, I suspect it will be fine margins again and probably decided by the head-to-head clashes between the two.

I certainly have not seen a Community Shield game played out with that much anger/physicality for a long time. Some sly tackling going on from both sides and Guardioa definitely has Liverpool/Klopp in his head.

Pretty unlucky from the highlights for Liverpool for me, Salah had numerous chances and could have had a hat trick, good to see him in those positions. If he stays fit I'm sure he will get plenty of goals this year again. Walkers goal line clearence was out of this world.

Pep getting booked was good to see, it wasn't a bad challenge by Gomez, both players went for it at the same height and it was there to be won. Then city didn't stop when Origi went down in the second half.

I wouldn't say that lol.

It should be really. Although I expect Norwich will be decent at attacking. Whether their defence can hold out though is another question entirely.

Theres bound to be one big upset in the first weekend, always is. Can't see it being pool mind, maybe west ham or toon winning (although would the latter even count as a "shock")

So the first goal of the Premier League season is an own goal

Liverpool starting very comfortably indeed.

Have t played overly well, Norwich been unlucky.

Think Liverpool will be the swashbuckling team of two season ago rather than the stable machine of last year!

Interesting game there! Norwich had a hatful of chances. Will be fascinating to see how well their approach fares against lesser oppositions.

Norwich played well at times during the match and had so many chances that they wasted but their approach made it easy for Liverpool to score 4 against them. I had Norwich as one of the teams to get relegated but they could pick up victories against mid table teams if they are not so vulnerable in defence like they were tonight. I did find it funny when Martin Tyler and Jamie Carragher said that "Norwich won the 2nd half" Martin Tyler also said something along the lines of Norwich's fans being entertained as all of the goals in the match were scored at the end where they were sitting. I guess the 4 goals Liverpool scored must have brightened up their night as well then
