Yes, the increase in cases is partly explained by increased testing but also there is now greater spread proportionally as Tim says through the younger and healthier population - we saw the same initially in Germany with all those who had been skiing returning in February, which is why the death rate there was comparatively small to begin with.

It's possible that this part of the population are generally more independent and therefore not living at home and less likely to carry the virus to more susceptible older people, or that there is much more care being adopted between younger and older people but let's just be thankful that the hospitalisations are continuing to fall.

It’s the same scenario in Germany now. A very young mobile profile that is spreading the virus but it hasn’t hit the community in the same way that it did last time...for the time being. Just hoping it holds.

Very interesting to see the spread in Scotland. The numbers look awful but where my family and friends all live is ticking over on a couple of cases a day, not bad for the third largest local authority. Mainly driven by greater Glasgow for the time being. Have to see if that results in spread out into the rest of Scotland. Orkney picking up a case is worrying though, the islands were virus free for a good long while

Does anyone understand the new quarantine rules

Think it needs to be all or nothing at the moment. Either every country you need to quarantine from or none at all. Not the jumbled mess we're in at the moment.

I’ve said that from the start. You know what we’re dealing with now that schools have reopened? Kids having gone on foreign holidays and having to quarantine for two weeks. We won’t see some kids until October.

If I booked a foreign holiday for half term and the country ended up on the list, I would lose half a months pay for missing two weeks of work. I’m not sure what the rules are for other workers.

For workers it depends on the employer. There is no consistency, but I suspect in the most part most companies will be asking employees to self-isolate for 2 weeks be it paid or unpaid.. or asking them to take extra holidays.

I suspect the reason for England not adding Greece/Portugal, especially the latter, is political. I think we would piss Portugal off way too much. I will agree though, there is no consistency whatsoever, but the outbreaks seem to be targeted to certain areas so who knows really.

What I don’t understand is that if I go on holiday and have to self-isolate for two weeks, am I still able to work if I’ve been working from home?

Yes. If you’re working from home it doesn’t really matter if you’re on a quarantine or not. You just won’t be able to pop down to the shop for anything.

Yeah I did two weeks post holiday quarantine and whilst it was annoying it's easily manageable if you can work from home and have someone able and willing to bring food shopping.

Yes, if you are fortunate enough to be able to work from home then you can of course continue working whilst self-isolating.

Personally I don't see why if you've come back from a country that has an equal amount of community spread to us (i.e. a fair amount) you should have to exercise additional measures to wearing a mask in shops/on public transport and maintaining social distance if you aren't displaying symptoms but I'm not the government.

3k new cases today, just 5 days after kids went back to school.

It does seem like we're on a knife edge now, especially in the North West. Looking at the patterns of Spain & France, I'm guessing we a small increase in deaths in the coming weeks. The key thing for me is when universities go back as this is the group where it's going to spread.

Just makes it all the more baffling in the rush to get people back to the office asap.

You're a few days behind. The government are now insisting there never was a campaign to get people back into the office. Apparently, we all imagined it.

Yes, I particularly enjoyed the Daily Mail demanding everyone get back into the office to do the job they were already doing remotely, despite around 70% of their OWN workforce working from home, including no doubt those at the top... plus ça change.

Repeat after me

Working from home is working

Working from home is working

Working from home is working

Yeah those are totally the numbers I wanted to see the night before the entire school returns.

So today was as much a success as it was ever going to be. Social distancing is so f***ing hard in a school, it’s so unnatural. Had to exclude a boy before we even got to lunch because he could just not follow any of the new rules there to keep everyone safe.

I just wish I could teach in my own classroom again with a computer that actually works instead of using everyone else’s shitty ones. It’s going to be a long year.

Here-in lies the problem, feel for you I can imagine it's a nightmare but it's basically impossible. It might be ok in smaller schools or private schools, but can you imagine large schools in inner cities following them? In my school it would have been impossible.

Yeh and hate the way it shows examples on the news as if they all act like that’s when the cameras off.

Dr Catherine Hill on the Ch4 news showing a glimpse of Britain next month going over the hospitalisation averages in France from June through the summer and states in June the average in ICU due to C19 was between 2-4 in July it was between 8-11 now it’s over 41!

The civil service are being told to return to the office now, people asking questions that are being completely ignored, people being told to “give it a go, you might enjoy it” etc, basically the Government have said that working from home is no longer an option and wouldn’t have surprised me that if they had for power to they would make private companies do the same.

This is all being proposed by the rentier class - desperate to hang on to their huge payouts for doing fuck all - and worried that without a return to the office that these nice rents will dry up. I'm not proposing people work at home forever but there should be a culture shift to allow those that can and want to work from home whenever it suits them (benefits include: not commuting for 10 hours a week, spending more time with family /friends, as well as spending more money locally to support local and family businesses) then this should be allowed, particularly as the priority of keeping schools open may be compromised if community transmission (R rate) increases as a result of a mass return to the office.

No consideration for health (physical or mental) of the workforce, just keep commuting and consuming please debt slaves.

The lockdown has opened people's eyes to a different way of working, something that we should embrace where it benefits us. That genie ain't going back in the box.

Personally I can't wait to get back to the office, fed up to death of working from home full-time. Mine reopened this week but they split the company into 2 bubbles & I'm the other one. However I'm on holiday next week then have to isolate for 2 weeks so can't actually get back until mid-October f*** SAKE :arrr:
