Madonna's 8th studio album & kicks off a new decade with 2000's Music, which saw Madonna take a more experimental route incorporating rock, country & folk, as well as dance pop & electronica. Yet another critical & commercial success with over 11 Million copies worldwide & would spawn 3 successful singles (including the title track). In this ranking I'll of course be including her 'American Pie' cover, which did feature on International versions of the album.

To change things up (as well as keep things interesting) I will be including the 2 other planned singles, 'Impressive Instant' & 'Amazing', the former was Madonna's choice, while the latter was the label's choice & neither could come to an agreement, so neither got a release. These 2 choices are optional of course & only include them if u want 2.

Simply rank the singles from best to worst:

Music
Don't Tell Me
What It Feels Like For A Girl
American Pie

*Impressive Instant
*Amazing

If you haven't already, here's the links to Madonna's other eras:

Erotica ● rank the singles

All 10’s

Love all of these !!!

'Music' is such a trash song its success will always be a mystery to me.

'Don't Tell Me' and 'What It Feels Like for a Girl' outdid.

1. Impressive Instant (I'm not sure whether this would have worked as a single, but it's by FAR AND AWAY the best track on the album)

2. Don't Tell Me

3. Music

4. American Pie

5. What It Feels Like For a Girl (the Above & Beyond remix in the video would probably put this in 2nd place)

6. Amazing

What It Feels Like for a Girl is easily the best

Those two single choices between M and the label though would’ve been such good choices! I think Amazing would’ve been the bigger commercial hit but I’ve always loved Impressive Instant.

Funny enough on the Music album Music the song and American Pie are my least favourites. The album tracks though are gems and I love the mix of electronic futuristic pop fused with country esque ballads on there too. An album with missed opportunities for sure but incredible sales due to her star power being huge then and sales in general especially on the albums charts being in such a brilliant position.

This is the album I struggle with most - love most of the album tracks (Nobody's Perfect, Runaway Lover, Gone), but the singles are so disappointing for the most part. Don't Tell Me is at least sonically interesting, but Music is bland and I have a (seemingly irrational) hatred for What It Feels Like For A Girl, which I have never enjoyed. American Pie is utterly pointless as a cover, it misses the intent of the original, but just suffers most from being bland. I'd never switch it off, but never chose to listen to it.

Don't Tell Me remains one of my absolute favourites from her, it just never gets old for me. I can still remember how floored I was when I first heard it, those glitchy beats and guitars and that moment when I first heard that outro. I do like everything here though, even if I would rarely choose to listen to American Pie.

1) Music

2) Impressive Instant *

3) Don't Tell Me

4) What It Feels Like for a Girl

5) American Pie

6) Amazing *

The top 4 are all 9+ for me - 'What It Feels Like for a Girl' is often neglected but it's such a tender ballad and an unusually gentle approach to female empowerment. Even 'American Pie' is an 8/10, always enjoyed Madonna's cover (whereas I've never been a fan of the original) and thought it worked as an album closer. 'Amazing' is a bit filler but still an enjoyable track.

I liked Don't Tell Me and its iconic video at the time which made me want to go to America's 'Wild West' and see the desert and almost impossibly blue skies.
