Break Up Song is absolutely perfect for the Strictly audience, which is more about selling albums than singles and a Break Up Song screams "go buy the album" more than "go stream the single". Sweet Melody is having a few weeks downtime at the moment due to Christmas songs, so throwing out a Break Up Song performance on one of the biggest album sales weeks of the year is a wise move than performing either of the other 3 singles, and it helps that the song will be very familiar with the audience - it's the 7th biggest airplay hit of the entire year.

Agree with this - it will definitely sell the album more than a SM performance would, especially so close to Christmas.

Surely performing Sweet Melody (a song that's REALLY connected with the public, much more than Break Up Song did) on this week is a wise move? And this song will be familiar with the audience as well since it's, again, turning into a bigger hit than Break Up Song was?

Make it make sense. Sweet Melody is the biggest song they've had since Woman Like Me, surely you'd try milk it to absolute death and push it as much as you can to get that exposure instead of letting it drop off the face of the Earth for a few weeks just because of Christmas? And Sweet Melody being higher on the charts means more success to the album anyway as opposed to Break Up Song which might crawl back into the top 75 for a week and dissappear again?

I guess people are already quite aware that 'Sweet Melody' is on the album, whereas they may be reminded that they really liked 'Break Up Song' earlier in the year so decide to buy the album. Performing a range of tracks usually sells the album better.

Yes definitely agree, Break Up Song hasn’t had its big prime time performance either

There are certain songs that sell albums better than others

For example, Love me like you was a perfect single to sell Get Weird over Christmas.

Strictly is having a huge effect on iTunes this year, they should be performing Sweet Melody or a ballad.

I don't see the whole "BUS will connect more with the audience" argument very well since the Strictly audience is so diverse. Everyone and their mother watches the show and people obviously love SM. They could have just performed that and given it the attention it deserves. Both songs will promote the album. The difference is BUS will probs barely scrape the top 10 on iTunes for a few days whereas SM would benefit more since it's the current single.

Even just open with an acapella/acoustic chorus to show off their vocals before they do choreo etc.

To sell the album you need an outright POP song or a ballad. Considering the ballad they have here is the worst song on the album and the poppiest song they have is the second best song on the album, it’s a no brainer, to be honest.

Sweet Melody might just be the best thing they’ve ever done, but like Woman Like Me, it wouldn’t make people think “Oh, the album must be good” ‘cause it just sounds like a girlgroup single with not much background context (and its performance would either be a modified version or the sassy sexy ones they’ve been doing which... won’t get the general public interested in the album. Not to mention Sweet Melody is already smashing so for them to perform another great song from the same album would make people think “Oh so that’s already two songs I love from this one, I might check it out”.

Break Up Song’s the perfect choice, the 80’s sound is just the cherry on the top. I just hope they don’t ruin it somehow with a different instrumental. I’d love to hear it with a band.

Because certain songs connect more with certain audiences. Sweet Melody is a trap/rnb-infused pop song, that appeals to a younger streaming audience. Whereas Break Up Song isn't so much of a streaming hit but it's sugary pure pop sound that is more widely accessible which is why it has done much better with radios like Heart / Radio 2 - which is much more in line with the kinds of audiences who buy albums and watch strictly (which I know is a generalisation as they have a huge audience but a lot of that audience DOES fit that category). I just think a really good performance of Break Up Song is going to connect with the album buying public (aka a strictly audience) than a sweet melody performance. Woman Like Me was a huge streaming hit but really didn't connect with the Strictly audience I don't think. Yes; Sweet Melody is a better song and would do more; but I just think Break Up song is the wisest choice.

The singles boost will be wasted either way due to Christmas so it doesn't really matter that much.

All in all I don't think it's a "moronic" choice at all. I think they see it as the most accessible album seller for that time of the year.

The fact that the audience is so diverse, is the reason why, on paper, BUS is the better option to sell the album. As Joe has said, 'Sweet Melody' is a huge hit, but it'd just cater too much to the younger audience more than BUS would, which would cater towards both the younger and older audiences. It is extremely popular across the board and with it being an all out, 80's inspired pop banger, it's more than likely to sell the album and appeal to a wider audience (both the younger audience as well as a lot of the older audience who watch Strictly and listen to Heart/Radio 2 etc..) more than a SM performance would.

Basically, why would you want to perform a song that'd appeal to 25% (SM) of the audience when you could appeal more to 50% (BUS)? (Ik those figures are random and I've exaggerated the effect, but hopefully you see the point aha)

This time of the year isn't about selling the single, it's about shifting as many albums as possible in the run up to Christmas! 'Sweet Melody' will be fine after Christmas. It'll have a good/great bounce back (roflmao) once the Christmas songs are out of the chart.

*All this will be irrelevant anyway when the BUS performance has no impact and the album falls below 10k for the first time that week lmaooooo! :')*

I assume I'll go like 8-12-3-3-3-4-8-9-25(Christmas week)-35(ACR)-3(back to SCR) or something.

It’ll have to be reset before it can reach 3 again though? I can see it being 35-15(gets a reset)-3

Omg here for a breathe or Happy 4 U performance :cheeseblock:

Not sure if it’s been said already but this is back on the front page of Hot Songs on Apple.. (#4)

It would also be #4 right now on AM without the Christmas songs too, it’s holding up incredibly well.

It would be 2 on AM now without the Christmas songs :o

There can’t be a lot in it between this, 34+35 and Get Out of My Head, but it’s holding up amazingly well.

Love how huge it’s been for them.

10 in todays update! I hate christmas songs x

Cmon Smash Melody... another week top 10!

Edited by legendsglory

Back to 1 on HHUK.. totally pointless now haha

Annoying how it would finally be #2 if it wasn’t for Christmas haha!

It’s still doing amazingly, should go back top 10 by Friday as Christmas is already falling...

I was hoping we might get a big performance of this at the BRITs next year.. the show is on May 11th.. same night they are booked in to play Leeds arena 😔

They can always prerecord though. :P

They could even use the tour performance as their Brits performance.
