Diego Maradona has died of a heart attack aged 60.

 

Football legend Diego Maradona has died at the age of 60.

 

The former Argentina attacking midfielder and manager had successful surgery on a brain blood clot earlier in November.

 

It was then announced he was to be treated for alcohol dependency.

 

One of the greatest players of all time, Maradona was captain when Argentina won the 1986 World Cup, producing a series of sublime individual performances.

 

He played for Barcelona and Napoli during his club career, winning two Serie A titles with the Italian side.

 

Maradona scored 34 goals in 91 appearances for Argentina, representing them in four World Cups.

 

He led his country to the 1990 final in Italy, where they were beaten by West Germany, before captaining them again in the United States in 1994, but was sent home after failing a drugs test for ephedrine.

 

During the second half of his career, Maradona struggled with cocaine addiction and was banned for 15 months after testing positive for the drug in 1991.

 

He retired from professional football in 1997, on his 37th birthday, during his second stint at Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

 

Having briefly managed two sides in Argentina during his playing career, Maradona was appointed head coach of the national team in 2008 and left after the 2010 World Cup, where his side were beaten by Germany in the quarter-finals.

 

He subsequently managed teams in the United Arab Emirates and Mexico and was in charge of Gimnasia y Esgrima in Argentina's top flight at the time of his death.

Also exactly fifteen years after George Best died.

He has passed away the exact same day 15 years ago as George Best did who was also 60 when he passed away.

 

He was a great player, he had his faults.

 

It's a shame he didn't look after himself.

Oh wow, I watched a documentary about him last year, he certainly seemed to have a lot of issues later in life so I wouldn't say I'm too surprised, but still an undeniable legend gone :'(

I watched that documentary about him last year, I think it was on Channel 4.

 

When he joined Napoli, they were struggling at the bottom of Serie A. But the following season he almost single-handedly won them the league title.

 

 

 

 

I am surprised he lasted this long.

 

An absolutely unbelieveable player, I was too young to watch him but some the videos are just outrageous. That goal against England in the 1986 World Cup where he just glides past players is mesmerising. Clearly one of the GOATs. This is the sort of funeral where 30,000 in his homeland should be out on the streets paying their respects.

Very sad to hear this but his health issues & drug addictions were highly documented so this isn't as surprising as other sport-related deaths even at his relatively younger age of 60.

 

Arguably is THE greatest of all time. Not only does he have the World Cup accolades but what he achieved at Napoli, unbelievable.

This is very sad news and the similarities with George Best make it even worse. Both players were among the best of all time and they both had off field problems which must have contributed towards their deaths. Of course Maradona had his controversies such as the "Hand Of God" and the failed drugs test but besides that he was undoubtedly one of the most gifted footballers of all time.

Argentina has a theee day mourning period.

 

The tribute on Sky Sports News last night was very moving. I saw the headline and didn't believe it at first.

 

I thought of George Best as well when I watched the news last night.

 

R.I.P. Diego, you left a legacy.

A shock to see but his health has never seemed great whenever I saw him, RIP Diego.

 

 

Argentine prosecutors are investigating Diego Maradona's doctor for possible manslaughter following the footballing legend's death four days ago.

 

 

 

Police in Buenos Aires have searched the house and private clinic of Leopoldo Luque as they try to establish if there was negligence in Maradona's treatment following surgery.

 

 

 

The 60-year-old died of a heart attack at his home where he was recuperating.

 

 

Dr Luque has not been charged. He denies any wrongdoing.
