Just for a bit of contest 78k is 0.11% of the UK population. Practically nobody.

But an estimated 1500 will need hospital treatment in a system that runs at a higher % of capacity than heathrows runways did pre-covid. That’s the major concern

Yeah it's a small number, but you're getting 400k a week at that rate and that's only people that have come forward for a test. Real number is probably double that.

I just think it’s ridiculous the schools are still open at this point. We’re finishing earlier than planned by going this Friday but if I get Covid now, that’s a Christmas alone for me.
Cases are likely to go through the roof over the coming weeks and scientists have called for immediate action such as closing of hospitality places and schools but as usual, the government have done nothing.
78,000 cases in one day is just devastating, why can't Johnson just listen to the scientists?

But if they do that it will risk permanently eroding trust in vaccines, as lots of people thought the vaccine would prevent things like school closures and hospitality closures.

They've had enough of experts.

The scientist advises on the science and how the disease develops it’s up to government to decide the response!
Think the better news is it looks like symptoms develop way quicker with Omicron, so the lag to hospitalisations shouldn't be as high. But does look like this wave has hit us at the worst time possible.. looks like the rest of Europe can push it back to January hopefully (Denmark aside).
France has red listed the UK. Probable that other EU nations will follow.

It will only be temporary and the right call too. EU needs to push the Omicron wave back to January.

I agree. Anything to push it back to get past the delta peak and get some of the delta patients out of hospital. Plus get as many folks boosted as possible before the chaos erupts
88k in UK today! :o It’s going to be over 100k by tomorrow (if it isn’t already as these statistics are very uncertain due to breakages reported yesterday).
They did predict back in the Summer when all restrictions were lifted we'd see 100K+ per day. Didn't think they expected it to be in almost 6 month's time!

We’ll be 100,000k cases a day already. Maybe tomorrow, maybe not. Think the peak will be in a few weeks yet, but looks like this peak will hopefully be much quicker.

The government appear to be largely relying on vaccine boosters but that alone isn’t going to stop omicron spreading. Additional measures will be needed to maintain some form of control including the reintroduction of social distancing. Some of the rules make no sense such as no masks in restaurants or pubs where people spend more time in close contact with others. There is no proper plan to deal with this. I think the future is very uncertain and a new year lockdown will be on the cards if deaths and hospitalisations increase. Even if NHS isn’t overwhelmed, the number of people being unwell and having to self isolate is going to cause chaos for businesses, the community and particularly the health and social care sector.

Exactly. How does this number compare with flu infections from two years ago?

If we followed the scientists we'd have been in lockdown for almost 2 years now.

This, to be honest. :kink:
