Given the news of further lockdown parties held on the eve of Prince Phillips funeral, can it really get any worse for the Tories? It’s only a matter of time before Johnson goes but whoever replaces him won’t have an easy time. The only saving grace for the Tories is they are over two years away from another general election and they will be hoping the general public will have forgiven or forgotten by then. I think there will certainly be a protest vote at the local elections, which may be the time when Johnson is forced out if not before.

If there is a new leader put in place the GE could be a lot closer than we think!

Plan B restrictions are ending on 26th Jan including the compulsory wearing of masks. Most won't affect me apart from the mask wearing on public transport. I live in London though so who knows if TFL will keep masks as a 'condition of carriage'.
I really don't know why mask wearing or working from home where proven possible and successful needs to end quite so soon? Seems too early in my opinion.
Surely people if they individually want to keep doing those things can? Idk. I don't understand why the UK approach seems consistently to be a or nothing, as if people didn't work from home at all pre-2020.

I mean you can't go against your managers wish really if they want people back in the office - I've worked in that situation and was basically forced to leave. Thankfully not an issue anymore in my current workplace.

I think wearing a mask on public transport/shops - especially the tube or when there is limited air ventilation isn't that big of a deal really and would alleviate alot of people's anxieties.

I'm not even that anxious about it all, I've just seen how it affects other people with their anxieties or who have developed long covid or lost family to Covid. It's ....literally a piece of fabric.

Mask wearing should definitely be mandatory in what I would call compulsory locations - public transport, supermarkets, NHS settings (I'm not sure if that one is being removed) as it doesn't lose anyone any money and protects the vulnerable. Certainly for as long as there are several thousand positive cases a day.
I'm torn really - in one way I exercise caution and agree with masks at least until the spring. But it seems the strategy now is just to get as many people infected as possible, the more people infected, the more chance we are better at building up immunity. Think it is very much as this stage, if you haven't had your vaccine you're gonna get left behind.

My issue with that is that it means that people with underlying conditions but are vaxxed are vulnerable to become very ill. It's like we don't have a duty to protect such people unless they become prisoners at home.

But I just don't know what the solution is? I know people with underlying health conditions who have caught covid and been fine. Obviously there are exceptions, but the idea is we have great immunity with covid and that has allowed the Omicron peak to hit hard, but also be sharp. I still think we should be cautious, especially around this time of year with lack of ventilated spaces but until everyone takes the vaccine we're unfortunately going to always be in some form of mess unless they catch covid 2-3 times.

Personally I'm counting down the days until I can burn my masks and never have to follow a 'rule' again. I'm looking forward to the day I can forget these years altogether.

Why so soon? Its a measure to desparately increase Boris Johnson's popularity with the voters and his backbenchers again after the parties saga.

Exactly this, had the scandal with the party not come out, I think restrictions would be in place for a couple more months even.

Masks and working from home should just be the norm now, but the Tories want to appease the anti-vaxxers and want to save Pret a Prete.

And a lot of elderly people vote Conservative so surely its a bit counterproductive for the Conservative government not to want to make them feel safer and more comfortable taking public transport for the rest of the winter.

Wearing a mask is such a minor thing to call it a minor inconvenience would be vastly overstating things. It’s such a tiny tiny tiny step that makes a lot of difference - especially when you’re in a country that mandated proper good medical grade masks and has no BS exemption that’s widely advertised.

I don’t understand peoples opposition to something so trivial yet so scientifically proven as effective. Like, get a grip.

Im gonna be wearing mine for a while to come yet. Not least because I can’t see the law changing here before summer but I’ll probably still voluntarily wear a cloth mask in high risk settings like planes or the gym or public transport. I’ve had like one cold in the past 20 months so your damn right I’ll mask up to avoid seasonal respiratory infections

The decision to drop plan b covid measures is political and not based on science. It’s way too early. Johnston is playing games with his own party and the public in the hope that dropping restrictions will boost his own popularity and buy him time.

Fully agreed - I will continue wearing a face covering. It’s not much to ask and helps prevent spread of the virus. I don’t understand the negativity around masks.
