Inspired by the debate taking place in the chart forum right now!

'thank u, next' and 'positions' are Ari's two latest lead singles and they've had the exact same chart trajectory so far (6 weeks at #1 in the U.K.) - but which one is superior?

thank u, next

positions

Voted for 'positions' - I was taken in by its smooth charms straight away and it's just got better and better. On the flip-side, I was really underwhelmed by 'thank u, next' at first, but it did grow, however not to the heights of 'positions'. To compare, 'positions' charted at #1 for me and I think 'thank u, next' got to #18 eventually!

On a wider scale, I do think 'thank u, next' is still Ariana's signature hit and a huge moment in pop culture.

I love both songs equally but the cultural impact and absolute EVENT that Thank U, Next was and still is tbh clinches it for me!
Definitely 'positions' but isn't anywhere close to her best (those being 'Into You', Side to Side' & 'No Tears Left To Cry'. 'One Last Time' also up there too)
'positions' is easily the better song for me, obviously the ~cultural impact~ is an entirely different question.
Whilst 'thank u, next remains strong in her discography... 'positions' has quite honestly quickly become one of my favourite ever songs by her.

whilst I don't think either song is particularly amazing (the understated effect does not suit Ari at all) I would go with thank u, next. TUN getting 6 weeks at #1, I was fine with, because it was really such a cultural moment and a nice reset for her considering the year(s) she just had to go through.

positions doesn't really do anything, it's not that good of a song coupled with the lack of meaning behind it.. and there were other songs on the charts that were just.. better?

thank u next, is still my favourite of the two.

I do love 'positions' but it's nowhere near as iconic as TUN.
