Maybe a round robin format, but the only realistic solution is for Poland to have a bye and Sweden play Czech Republic. Very unlikely Slovakia who finished third in Russia's group would take their place.

The Russian Football Union said it will go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) to appeal against its ban from international competitions after the country's invasion of Ukraine.

It has been confirmed Poland advances on walk-over and will await the Czech Republic/Sweden winner, to be played in Chorzow, Poland.

Also, the Scotland/Ukraine match will be postponed until June. Wales/Austria will go on in March as planned and the final of that path will also be played in June.

Japan booked their place at this year's Word Cup in Qatar with a dramatic victory against Australia that also confirmed Saudi Arabia's qualification for the tournament.

Two late goals from substitute Kaoru Mitoma in Sydney sealed Japan's place in Qatar with a game to spare.

Victory lifted Japan top of Group B of Asian qualifying, above Saudi Arabia who are four points clear of Australia.

Australia now face a play-off campaign to reach a fifth successive World Cup.

The Socceroos next face Saudi Arabia in Jeddah in what is now a dead rubber on Tuesday, before going on to face the country that finishes third in Group A in a play-off game on 7 June.

North Macedonia beat European Champions Italy 0-1 in the World Cup playoff semi final meaning they miss a second World Cup in a row!
This is a truly massive shock! The fact that the winning goal came in the 92nd minute makes the impact even bigger. Italy were easily the best team at Euro 2020 and the way there were playing then made it look like they would have been favourites to win the World Cup. Roberto Mancini will probably get the sack after this. This has to be one of the biggest shocks of all time!

Massive moment for North Macedonia, I'm stunned regarding Italy, they would have been my tip for the World Cup, I think they're the first European champions since Greece not to make the World Cup.

I’m not even that surprised with Italy. I think the shine of their first two Euros games are clouding peoples opinions of them. They were pretty average for the rest of the tournament. They drew with Austria in 90 mins and needed pens to beat Spain and us.

Chielini & Bonnuci retiring without ever playing a knockout game at the World Cup and Jorginho potentially never even playing in one

Fair play to North Macedonia though. Beating Italy and Germany in the same qualifying campaign is some achievement.

I guess this opens the door even more for Cristiano Ronaldo to possibly play in one last World Cup...... unless North Macedonia strike once again!
How ironic, Titaly flops after winning the Euros

Meanwhile in CONCACAF:

Panama only draws Honduras at home, 1-1

Canada loses at Costa Rica 0-1 after going a man down

United States grind out a 0-0 draw at Azteca

Standings

Canada | 25pts | +13

United States | 22pts | +9

Mexico | 22pts | +6

Costa Rica | 19pts | +2

Panama | 18pts | +1

Canada hosts Jamaica on Sunday, travels to Panama on Wednesday. They'll clinch with any point, but basically have clinched already on goal differential.

United States host Panama on Sunday and travel to Costa Rica on Wednesday. A win versus Panama basically clinches it.

Mexico travels to Honduras on Sunday and finishes up by hosting El Salvador on Wednesday. Again a win likely clinches for them too.

The real battle is between Costa Rica and Panama for the playoff spot (likely versus New Zealand) Panama travels to the United States and hosts Canada, while Costa Rica travels to El Salvador then hosts the United States.

I can't wait until the World Cup if it's Canada-United States-Mexico at the very least. I think we're going to show out because if the Canadians and Americans are both healthy, who both have the most talent-rich rosters possibly that they've ever had, then we're going to turn heads this time around. Be ready, is all I'm going to say.

The Finals so far are looking very similar to the 2018 finals - of the teams qualified so far (excluding Qatar), all bar two took part in 2018 and the others qualified as recently as 2014! Looking as though Canada will break that trend though.
Nice to see Christian Eriksen score on his return for Denmark in the 4-2 defeat to the Dutch in the Ajax arena!
Some great players in their team, did they finish ahead of the US?
I had no idea A) Junior Hoilett played for Canada and b) he's still going (only 31? He feels like one of them retro payers for me. Remember him from that overpaid and completely useless QPR side )
