^ Just to clarify, that does include the late night repeat (which was watched by over 1m) which won't be included in the official figure when its published on Monday, but apparently the reported figure hasn't had adverts stripped out (which the official figure will) so it might end up close to that figure anyway. Regardless, still a fantastic rating! The launch of Lewis was watched by 11.31m so it wasn't far from outdoing that too.

Trying to find the previous biggest drama launch for ITV; I think it might be The Royal which debuted with 11.96m in January 2003 (Rosemary & Thyme also rated 11m+ (11.11m) for its first episode in August 2003).

1.9m for Traces again last night. The series averaged 2.3m:

E1: 3.7m

E2: 2.8m

E3: 1.9m

E4: 1.7m

E5: 1.9m

E6: 1.9m

ITV seem to be striking gold with their 3-part true crime dramas spread out over three days. The Pembrokeshire Murders, Des, Quiz...

It wouldn't surprise me if they have another two or three ready to go before the end of the year, and I'm sure they'll be just as popular.

5.7m for Death in Paradise, up 100k week-on-week. On ITV, 3.2m watched The Chasers Road Trip

Death in Paradise

E1: 6.2m

Intrigued to see how It's a Sin will perform tonight. I've seen it promoted a fair bit and there's a lot of buzz in certain circles, but I don't know how wide its audience will be. I'd be happy with 2m.

I think It’s a Sin might be seen as an underperformance on the overnights but a large part of the audience is probably more likely to watch on All4

I think It's A Sin will be quite low overall but 16-34 audience will be strong.

I expect it will be similar to Russell T Davies' last project Years and Years in that it was hyped, had a good buzz and was well received but won't have widespread appeal beyond the twittersphere and younger audiences.

1.9m (10.7%) for It's a Sin last night, 12.2% share of 16-34s which is Channel 4's best for a drama in 3 years.

I'm guessing Kiri might have been the last drama to have a better share of 16-34s (it rated 3.2m in the overnights, can't find the share of 16-34s though).

The Masked Singer is really going from strength to strength with a new series high!

In fact last year's final was 6.4m so depending on the exact figure, last night is potentially its highest rated episode so far in the UK!

Not a great return for Marcella or Best Home Cook last night.

Celebrity Best Home Cook: 2.7m

Marcella (ep 1): 2.8m

Marcella (ep 2): 1.9m

A bizarre decision to start with a double bill into the 10pm slot as shown by the big drop off in rating between episode 1 and 2. Best Home Cook could potentially increase tonight with The Repair Shop leading into it.

The first rating for Marcella isn't too bad when you consider Series 2 opened with 3.7m which was a big drop from what Series 1 opened with and averaged. The share wasn't far off the opening share for Series 2 either:

Marcella Series Openers:

Series 1 (2016): 6.12m (27.6%)

Series 2 (2018): 3.74m (17.4%)

Series 3 (2021): 2.80m (15.4%) / 1.90m (14.2%)

Marcella Series Averages:

Series 1 (2016): 4.91m (22.8%)

Series 2 (2018): 3.40m (16.4%)

Having another episode straight after at 10pm was clearly a bit too much for viewers, although the share was quite similar.

Some Wednesday ratings - as expected Best Home Cook increased with The Repair Shop lead in, which itself continues to be quite a force out-rating Coronation Street!

The Repair Shop: 5.4m

Coronation Street: 5.3m (not clear which episode)

The Bay: 3.9m

Celebrity Best Home Cook: 3.0m

Grand Designs: 2.1m

I love the Repair Shop. It's perfect lockdown tv, it makes you smile and feel good. Plus it's actually quite interesting learning about how they restore everything.
What generally is a good rating for a TV programme? when I look at ratings for TV shows I'm not sure whether 3 million for example is good or not.
  • Author
It would depend on the type of programme I think. Nowadays, in regards to BBC 1 and ITV, a drama rating 4 or 5m in the overnights would be good and 6 or 7m would be fantastic, especially when you consider they generally seem to add 2m on with catchup.

E3: 9.49m / 9.69m

All episodes adding 3m+ on their overnights, with the first episode adding 3.5m. The Pembrokeshire Murders: Catching The Gameshow Killer rated 5.67m / 5.72m which is 2.2m up on the overnight!

Top episode (Tuesday) of EastEnders barely scrapped 5m overall (4.86m / 5.01m), nearly 2m behind Corrie! :drama: It's a good job EastEnders does better on other devices than the other soaps.
