UK Chart Run: 8-2-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-4-4-6-12-36-63-73 (23 weeks)

 

This time we bid farewell to Bryan Adams and the biggest hit of 1991. Bryan Adams was #1 for a very long long long long time, 16 weeks that felt like several years at the time. Released as a single to accompany the huge film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves - as was common at the time, this was the year's big soundtrack song (see Whitney Houston and Wet Wet Wet for other examples in later years). I'm a bit surprised it's gone already tbh, although not personally disappointed as I found the song almost unlistenable by about week 10 and it's never recovered in the 30 years since for me.

"Bryan Adam's Everything I Do became everyones fave hate-object in 1991 as it topped the UK chart without ever selling in huge numbers, and then refused to budge for 16 interminable weeks, a Rock-Era record. It was the movie Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves that was to blame. On the one hand we got Alan Rickman into cinematic pantheons, on the other hand we got Kevin Costner being American as Robin Hood, and this Canadian future-UK-based big ballad dominating the musical year. As the film was hugely popular the record trickle-sold over a long period and eventually did the million. Me, I grew to love it and bought it, and then got bored with it, and I've never really come back to seeing it as it was when it was fresh and new. On the plus side, it kept Right Said Fred off the top spot for 6 or 7 weeks, knocked Jason Donovan off the top spot, and stopped 2 Unlimited grabbing another number one. Bryan has done way better tracks though, Run To You, When I'm Gone to name but two. He's also done way worse, stand up and take a bow Please Forgive Me. So, half forgiven at any rate"

 

Time to get voting and we'll see who's out next...

Jason Donovan still there?! has to go imho much worst than Bryan :o

Jason Donovan has really outstayed his welcome here, even in terms of iconic cheesiness, Bryan Adams and Right Said Fred are way better!

I do think that Bryan Adams song is massively overrated but there's definitely worse still here - 'Any Dream Will Do' to go this time!

I love Any Dream Will Do, so voted for Chesney.

 

What were the weekly sales for Everything I Do, did it ever had a groundbreaking week for sales or was it just heading up a weak market for ages?

So actually it did pretty high numbers for a while (for the typical sales at the time) and had a very gradual drop off, even if the latter weeks were probably lucky ones given sub 60K sales. Only Queen managed more in a week and that was due to Freddie's death and higher christmas sales so wasn't a typical comparison.

 

Oceanic! I like both Jason and Chesney's songs :')

Those 100,000 + sales coincided with the movie release (19th July) and box-office topping, so very useful promo there. Same as Whitney in 1992, Wet Wet Wet all big movies that kept them all performing until their welcome was totally worn-out :)

 

It's Insanity that Oceanic is still in. I think everyone's just forgotten about it even existing :lol:

Interesting, like most long-running No.1s, there are some weeks where a bit of luck, fortunate timing and a slow market is involved. Umbrella in 2007 springs to mind, I'm sure that kept recovering after a midweek slump to be No.1 at the weekend again.

Is it too early to call it? Well, if there's a late surge for Oceanic I can easily do a quick assassination review.... so

 

"Jason Donovan was in his post-SAW period by now, as they became last year's news, and all the acts bar Kylie were headed for the "Archive" section of pop history, so he did the sensible thing and moved into theatre where he could mix his acting and singing, starting with this revival of Lloyd-Webber/Rice's Joseph & The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat prime cut. I have seen the show, albeit with Gareth Gates not Jason, and have seen Jason in Pricilla Queen Of The Desert musical, where I got dragged into the show by virtue of having blagged my way into a cheap "royal box" ticket at the last minute. It involves a crane on a bus hanging over the stalls and a drag act taking the piss out of anyone in the box. I mention that as it's way more entertaining than Joseph, but then I'm not the target-audience (kids). This song is OK. It's not classic Lloyd-Webber, Jason's not the best singer in the world, but it probably appealed to generations of kids and former-kids who did it at school. We did the Pirates Of Penzance, so......not me. "
