A retro style thread for the retro forum! Years ago everyone used to post pics of the last five albums they had listened to so I thought I'd bring it back...

 

 

I'll start it off with mine

 

 

 

Listened to this one last Sunday, I would have to go a LONG way back to find any more pre-2000 albums I'd listened to in full! Looking at the stack of CDs I've accumulated it was probably Wet Wet Wet or Glen Campbell though.

lovely presentation but how on EARTH do you get to post stuff like this on BJ?!

 

Rhythm Nation is my fave - if you can cut out all the self-indulgent chatter tracks :)

I love Janet's ridiculous spoken interludes, they are totally self indulgent I agree but I think they give her albums a sense of personality and continuity - plus I'm a sucker for a little bit of pretentiousness :lol:

 

Not sure if the first bit means how we go about posting images? I just google them on image search and include the size I want (500x500 here) and use the url link and IMG function, you'll see if you quote the post.

'Dangerous' is my favourite MJ album! Much prefer it to 'Thriller' or 'Bad' as a body of work. 90s MJ is much more interesting although of course 80s MJ has plenty of fantastic moments.

 

Can't decide on what my favourite Janet album is yet but 'Rhythm Nation' could easily be it. The singles are excellent, 'Escapade' perhaps being my all time Janet fave. :heart:

 

You could probably have the length of an album if you compiled all Janet's interludes together. :lol:

There a handful of us that think Dangerous is his best album, possibly just Haus, you and I though! :lol: I think it's aged really well and the production still sounds amazing, especially in the second half of the album where pretty much everything is superb :wub:

My vague New Year's resolution to explore more old music is... not really going amazingly well so far, but I have listened to one 'retro' album this year so far which is one more than I could usually say :lol: hopefully will get around to digging into more old albums soon ~

It's from 2004 so not exactly in the remit of this forum but close enough amirite.

 

Decided to give this a listen in the wake of MF DOOM's passing as it's an album I've long been aware of being an underground classic. Enjoyed it quite a bit, it's one that kind of needs to be enjoyed as a full body of work rather than having too many individual standout tracks but my faves on there were 'Accordion', 'Money Folder', 'Eye' and 'All Caps'. I'm probably missing a lot of its appeal as it's pretty lyric-focused and I'm bad at paying attention to lyrics but the instrumentals on it are great as well which is enough to keep me interested x

Oh I've been trying to get a copy of that Bré just because I'd often heard it referred to as a classic. I imagine it to be the type of album I would like from that type of genre too.

 

The only problem was him dying last year(!) as it sold out so soon and now is much more expensive than I was really wanting to pay.

Thanks for the instructions - I gave it a go but the format it copies won't fit the format BJ wants. They are basically the albums I reviewed in my thread anyway, but the ongoing failures are also the reason why I never ever attach images to posts, hey ho! :D

but today I re-listened to the Cranberries - No Need to Argue

from start to finish, while reading the album notes that come with the new 25th anniversary edition

 

most bands have a sophomore album bump

but the Cranberries only got better, and they did the album super quick

writing the songs and recording them in a matter of weeks

 

my current favourite is actually the title track

 

'Rhythm Nation' and 'Mezzanine' :wub: The former just about scrapes into my list too as I listened to that, Prince and Kate Bush in one sitting (YES 'Hounds of Love' and yes it was brilliant, I knew the plunge into the dark concept was coming but I still wasn't prepared :lol: *.*) - an 80s mood for sure that day!

 

Last 5 pre-noughties albums I listened to:

 

 

Aphex Twin and The KLF for when I needed to chill out the other day (the latter not usually an act you'd associate with chilling out, lol, but that album is a whole different story), Prince and Janet I touched upon for that 80s session I had, but I ended up revisiting Prince again the other day as I enjoyed it so much. I had high hopes as I love both 'When Doves Cry' and the title track. His discography looks way too expansive to dive head first into so any other recommendations would be appreciated :lol: T Rex I decided to check out as I was reminded of their #1 singles recently, all of which I enjoy, it wasn't as Earth shatteringly amazing as I was hoping for but certainly had its highlights.

Jade - so pleased you loved Hounds of Love, I mean it is practically impossible not to love it but still! ^_^

 

 

And great choice Bjork too, I was listening to that Cranberries album the other week and it has held up really well. I do love Zombie for it's complete OTT approach but the title track is definitely one of my favourites on it too.

Ooh, Purple Rain is Prince's perfect album, but they all have their moments (up to 1991). Sign O' The Times is prob the next one to go for, Or Around The World In A Day. Or Lovesexy. Or Graffiti Bridge. :lol:

 

Electric Warrior is a good album, but the essential T.Rex is the hits albums - The studio albums all have good tracks on them, but overall it was all about the singles and the odd album track or B side like Life's A Gas, Born To Boogie, Venus Loon. I have the entire T.Rex output, bit of a fan... :heart:

 

KLF album, yes that's not what you might expect from the singles.... :o

Mezzanine is a staggering achievement of sound.

Last five pre-2000's albums I listened to

 

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (1966)

REM - Green (1988)

MF Doom - Operation Doomsday (1999)

Pearl Jam - Ten (1991)

The Clash - London Calling (1979)

 

 

Ten and London Calling were excellent. Green was good, but I didn't like it as much as the other REM albums I've heard (Out Of Time, Automatic For The People, Life's Rich Pageant, Fables Of The Reconstruction), my default least fave of the five. I preferred Operation Doomsday over Madvillainy, I feel like the songs are more fully formed even if the instrumental outros drag a bit. Listened to Pet Sounds as I was interested after hearing it was inspired by Rubber Soul.

The Partridge Family Christmas Album (I have no shame, and it's rubbish)

 

Pet Shop Boys - Very

 

Bobbie Gentry - The Delta Suite

 

The Beatles - Help!

 

 

Plus: The last pre-2000s album I heard in it's entirety in a live setting, was ABC - The Lexicon Of Love Tour.

 

Those albums are all great. Mercury Rev covered that Delta Suite in it's entirety not long ago....

Ooh yay John, I find 'Help!' quite underrated in discourse about best Beatles albums. It's one of my favourites! The accompanying movie did help quite a few of the songs click with me (like 'Another Girl' during quite a chaotic scene iirc) and it has 'Yesterday', 'Ticket To Ride', 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away', the title track etc... :wub:

 

Will give the T. Rex greatest hits a go, I do own 'Sign O' The Times' from Prince but not heard any of those other albums you mentioned by him, so those too.

 

I thought surely I had to love 'Hounds of Love', Dandy, so I'm really glad I wasn't disappointed in the slightest<3

T-Rex ‘Gold’ is a decent version of their hits. My mum was a huge fan in her youth so I’ve heard most of the albums, I’d agree with John that they were mostly a singles band. Cosmic Dancer is my favourite of their album tracks

Glad you're a fan, Jade, Help! is fab, both the album and film. I like the quirkiness, the glorious technicolour pseudo-promos, the lush settings, the whimsy, plus I saw it in 1965 at the cinema in Liverpool, full-on Merseybeat era so it totally has nostalgia for me where Hard Days Night doesn't - I know I saw that one when it came out (I got mildly worried John seemed to have disappeared down the plughole in the bath, then found it funny that he just walked into the room) but it wasn't so much a kids film as Help! So many scenes in Help! stay with you growing up... :)
