The snobbery of indie fans never ceases to amaze me. This is the music they wanted to release this time around...so they did. Cracking song and will be massive, 4th decade in the industry and still popular! Luckily the GP aren't music snobs and like music for what it is.

Empty, boring pop beats over bad vocals and bad lyrics?? That's not massive. It's so maudlin Westlife could release it

I don't mind the pop production. But his voice really goes right through me and it honestly puts me off more times than not. :puke:

Glad to know that everything Max touches doesn't automatically turn to gold just because he's involved. It's... fine, but it's really not that interesting. The production is nice and if this was OneRepublic it wouldn't be getting a 2nd sniff from radio.

Ah well. As long as it gives Max another smash.

Why is Coldplay in the "indie forum" because the new song 100% ain't indie lol

I think it's mostly cos it's just more convenient to have everything by a particular artist in one place. There are more rock-influenced Coldplay albums (I still tend to think of them as a "rock band" lmao, maybe it's just my warped shortcut), which is partly what this section of the forum is about. (I did make a Vanessa Carlton thread in indie once when previously she would've definitely been in pop but oh well, hypocrite xo. Besides, she is MUCH more indie now)

Anyway I haven't listened to the song and I'm open but also not rly expecting too much :kink:

I opened the Billie Eilish thread on the pop forum (as she is one of the biggest pop stars right now) and it was moved here. I think Coldplay should be on pop forum too. Decisions..

Yeah, you just have to look at their last album to show they're not entirely pop. They are staying here~

The song is...alright, It kind of grew on me more as it went along as it started to remind me of the wonderful Hurts Like Heaven. It was definitely missing that anthemic edge that Coldplay usually have, can't see this being a big favourite at all and I wouldn't be paying it much attention at all if it wasn't for being by them, I'm here for it being a hit though just as I always think they're past the point of relevance and then they surprise me *.

I like it, but it's a bit paint by numbers generic hit. I'm sure it'll be stuck in my head at some point though.
Its quite good. Production-wise it seems be following the 80s style trend started by The Weeknd 'Blinding Lights'.
Coldplay have kept a fairly high standard throughout their career, I have to say there is something to like on all there albums so far and going by the first single this new album will be no different.
I swear I've listened 20 times and still don't know how it goes :o

I tried a few times and it just got worse and worse. Generic pop

It’s more 80s and the Weeknd than I originally clocked. It’s growing on me a fair bit now!

Just love the production on this! The chorus is sublime.

A big Brits performance will boost this song even more. Album likely to be massive if they stick with this sound. Surprised by some of the reaction on here. Everyone I know loves it, even my wife who doesn’t like much :D Chorus sticks in your head.

Incredible that they could debut top 10 especially in the streaming era! A remarkable feat

It would make 9 #1 albums by their mid 40s! The Beatles have the most with 15, I can see Coldplay eventually surpassing that if they never break up.
