February 21, 20214 yr Leona Lewis is shouting out to me. I know she mainly only had success of the back of X Factor, but she used to always do so well on iTunes but now anything released since Glassheart has slipped through the cracks. I would say that's because it's been almost 6 years since she's released a single. Her first proper single release in the streaming era was "Fire Under My Feet" and that was way back in 2015. :( Even though streaming would work against her, I still believed she could've had some top 40/20 hits potentially with the right songs. She did manage to have some success with the duet version of "You Are The Reason" with Calum Scott and "One More Sleep" does getting streamed well every Christmas. I have no clue when she's going to attempt to release new material either - being a Leona fan has been quite frustrating over the last few years or so. Unusually, Whitney Houston has gone against the grain among the legacy pre 2000 diva acts in that her Greatest Hits collection is consistently in the Top 50 albums each week and is made up primarily on streams. She also enjoyed a #2 smash hit single with Higher Love only 18 months ago and which is now double platinum in the UK. Many of her classic hits, particularly I Wanna Dance With Somebody generates large streaming numbers every month. Not sure why she is outperforming her peers in this regard but perhaps Higher Love introduced her to a millennial audience who heretofore were not familiar with her back catalogue. I would say that's partly due to Whitney's death though? After her death her discography got quite a big boost and a number of her songs still get lots of airplay etc.

February 27, 20214 yr Bastille had that one gigantic hit with Marshmello only couple of years ago. But would it have been huge as a Bastille solo? Streaming definitely cost them a top 10 hit with Good Grief in 2016.

Only 'Pompeii' and 'Of the Night' reached the Top 20 in the pre-streaming chart, however the songs that missed have gone to be decent hits too thanks to streaming. 'Good Grief' was indeed cost a Top 10 placing due to streaming but then streaming is what's made it a huge Platinum hit. They hit Silver with 'Joy' from their last record too, which 'only' reached #28 on sales. The Script achieved decent hits with their last two lead singles and I think OneRepublic are only enjoying as little success as they are now because of streaming.

If you look at milestones like top 10/top 40/top 100, there may well be less than once before due to the nature of streaming (although then artificially that's warped by ACR but that's another story), but instead we're getting a lot of slow burners that in the long term are doing so much better than a top 10 debut with 8 weeks in the top 100 before fading to oblivion ever did. J. Cole has half a dozen top 40 hits and yet his most popular song still hasn't cracked the top 100, which just goes to show that stuff not actually charting can do quite well for itself. I'm sure there are plenty of artists who've seemingly dropped off the map but are doing just fine thanks to residual streams of both their current output and back catalogue.
February 27, 20214 yr I think Katy Perry went wrong by leaving it too long to release something, it was 4 years which is a lifetime in pop music and in that time the landscape had changed significantly. I think Rihanna will be immune to this when/if she comes back though.

March 1, 20214 yr I would argue that due to hot hits on Spotify and promotional tools as such have led to the demise of certain artists. Then again the market these days is much more different than it was let’s say 15 years ago - less frontloaded, so more songs are very slow burners like chasing cars by snow patrol was in the download era.
