February 20, 20214 yr Chandelier was a held-back release, was it not? In any case, it entered the chart on the very same week streaming was first included so still very much sales-heavy - not to mention Titanium and her other features in the peak download era.
February 20, 20214 yr But she didn't have problems with streaming audience, which I think is the point of this thread. Cheap Thrills is one of the biggest Spotify hits to date.
February 20, 20214 yr But she didn't have problems with streaming audience, which I think is the point of this thread. Cheap Thrills is one of the biggest Spotify hits to date. Not disputing that, but my point is she made her "comeback" which crossed her over to that audience at a time when sales were still dominant.
February 20, 20214 yr Did Jason Derulo even go away ‘for a while’? Wasn’t he having big hits in 2017/8? To come back with a no.1 in 2020 doesn’t seem that weird considering.
February 20, 20214 yr He didn't have any hits in 2019, there was a nearly two year gap between 'Goodbye' and 'Savage Love'.
February 20, 20214 yr He didn't have any hits in 2019, there was a nearly two year gap between 'Goodbye' and 'Savage Love'. But I wouldn’t consider that a long enough gap to be ‘lost to streaming’.
February 20, 20214 yr It isn't actually that long of a gap in retrospect but there was definitely a sense that 'Goodbye' was going to be a last hurrah for him (and he did release other music in the gap between that and 'Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat)' which received almost no attention at all), it was surprising to see him resurfacing as a big TikTok personality and manage to actually use that to revive his music career.
February 20, 20214 yr She's already been mentioned but on the whole the streaming era hasn't been too kind to Katy Perry. She's still had a top 5 hit as lead artist and a number 1 as a featured artist but most of her singles / tracks have struggled. However she was already beginning to struggle pre-July 2014 (I think that's when streaming data was first inluded in the singles chart) so perhaps she would have been less successful anyway regardless of streaming. Rihanna showed signs that she too would have struggled in the streaming era had she continued to release new tracks at the rate she did in the early 00s. Madonna and Kylie are mentioned in this thread but both were struggling in the latter part of the downloads era. Madonna last reached the top 10 in 2009 and her 2012 releases had totally underperformed. Her star was waning long before streaming took off. Although more successful into the 2010s, Kylie's long comeback, which started in 2000, was fizzling out by 2011 and by 2012 she too was struggling to have a decent sized hit single.
February 20, 20214 yr Rihanna showed signs that she too would have struggled in the streaming era had she continued to release new tracks at the rate she did in the early 00s. Wasn't she the most streamed female artist on Spotify ever until Ariana overtook recently? ANTI's hits were carried by streaming so I'm not sure where this observation comes from.

Beginning to struggle pre-July 2014? Was Dark Horse not a long-running hit that managed to spend eight weeks in the top ten in the spring that year?
February 20, 20214 yr Wasn't she the most streamed female artist on Spotify ever until Ariana overtook recently? ANTI's hits were carried by streaming so I'm not sure where this observation comes from.Possibly it's the sheer volume of tracks she placed inside the top 10 between 2010 to 2012 (I count 11 as the main artist as well as others as featured artist) compared to 2013 and pre July 2014. However I've just checked she was between albums. ANTI may have performed well on streaming but it only delivered one top 10 hit from what I can see.

Was Dark Horse not a long-running hit that managed to spend eight weeks in the top ten in the spring that year?I had looked at its first chart entry date and overlooked the fact it didn't go top 10 for almost 6 months. However she did have other chart entries around the end of2013 and into 2014 that failed to hit the top 10 whereas previously she had been making the top 10 with ease.

However she did have other chart entries around the end of2013 and into 2014 that failed to hit the top 10 whereas previously she had been making the top 10 with ease. They were both being overshadowed a little by the longevity of Roar and Dark Horse though. She had at least one song in the top 40 every week from 08/09/13 to 22/06/14 (including both) which is quite impressive and certainly not a sign of an artist who's struggling.

Needed Me was a super slow burner whose peak doesn't really do it justice I suppose, may well hit a billion streams within a year. But even failing that, Rihanna was on two other top 3 hits right after the album came out anyway.
February 20, 20214 yr Dark Horse was literally THE most streamed song of the whole of 2014 in the US. So I don't think Katy Perry can be included here. I think her career just declined naturally. https://www.billboard.com/charts/year-end/2...streaming-songs
February 20, 20214 yr Rihanna was doing amazing and she still does on streaming. Her biggest problem with her Anti era was the whole role out of each song and album was so messy. So I don't think you can look at peak positions of songs from that era but overall sales and certifications. Nothing lined up properly to get a high peak but everything just kept bringing in consistent streams. I'm sure whenever she releases a proper new single it will get enormous streams.

Putting the US aside, the OCC also confirmed she was the 9th most streamed artist of 2014 in the UK too.
February 21, 20214 yr Public perception on Katy Perry just turned half way through the Witness era, I don’t think streaming was the problem.
February 21, 20214 yr I don't think Rihanna qualifies at all here tbh. She hasn't put out a studio album since 2016 and ANTI was very successful on streaming. Even last year she charted just outside the Top 10 as a featured artist on 'Believe It'. Nothing is guaranteed but there's no reason why she shouldn't continue to have Top 10 hits if she does decide to release new music. I was hesitant to mention Katy Perry as well because while it does seem she's had her day in the sun, I don't think streaming is to blame.
