I love this song, thank you for dedicating it to me :teresa:

State of Mind, omg
You've got to give it to Holly Valance. She's a woman of her word! She promised that she would never be a pop star at Kylie Minogie's age, as she wouldn't dream of being seen wearing scanty clothes and making hits after a couple of decades. Now, we don't see her at all and she hasn't had a single hit in decades!

You make it sound like she had a choice in the matter, she could barely muster a single hit a year after her debut.

Maybe this thread could be edited into being a Holly Valance thread, for the 2000s forum? As much as I'm honoured to have a thread for myself xx

In 2003 I wasn't really feeling State of Mind the single and didn't buy the album. I actually bought physicals of both a few years later, and I warmed up to State of Mind (song) - maybe it was a bit ahead of its time. However I still haven't heard the album! People on Popjustice rave about it though, so maybe I should give it a chance after almost 18 years! :o

I was more receptive to the Footprints era. I absolutely loved all three singles. I was so surprised and gutted that Naughty Girl only got to #16 in the UK! Not sure went wrong there because it another big hit in Australia where it reached #3.

Karma for her comments against Kylie tbh! But State of Mind was a yuuge bop.

The only Holly Valance song I remember is Kiss Kiss. I liked it, but I did think it was copying the style of songs that were popular at Eurovision at the time too much.

The origins of Kiss Kiss are from a Turkish composition called Şımarık released in 1997 by Tarkan. That’s likely why it gives you Eurovision vibes. Şımarık was a big hit in many European countries. It was rewritten in 2001 into an English language version and released by Stella Soleil, which had minor success in the US, before Holly Valance covered it in 2002.

State of Mind (song and album) are both brilliant. I love that weird period in the mid 00's where incredible pop material was handed to the most inappropriate popstars: Holly, Rachel Stevens second album etc
For me state of mind is her best song by a mile, at another time or maybe by another artist i always felt like it should have been a hit.

State of Mind is a great song. I love how it brought back in all the rough edges that had been smoothed out over the previous few years of electro-synth related stuff being released.

Tongue Tied and Desire, from the album, are also great.

She had a couple of catchy bops back in the day 'Kiss Kiss' was my jam of 2002 & even liked 'Naughty Girl', although weren't keen on 'Down Boy' (a bit too repetitive for my liking) & 'State Of Mind (song)' was kinda average.

Shame we didn't get "Tuck Your Shirt In" as single #4 from 'Footprints', cancelled due to 'Naughty Girls' flopping & 'Desire' was planned as the 2nd single from 'SOM', but scrapped after the album bombed. A shame really as that could have done decently. But being a long-term popstar wasn't on the cards for her unfortunately.

Down Boy was amazing  The breakbeat elements and guitar worked so well and she totally slayed her TOTP performance!

I remember learning the choreo off by heart. State Of Mind is definitely her best song for me. The album has become a bit of a cult classic. Kiss Kiss was the first CD single I ever bought *.*

State of Mind really is a BRILLIANT album.

In a way it's a shame the material on it didn't go to someone better who could have done more with it.

Apparently the Steve Anderson tracks were first offered to our Kylie!
