Spain was literally out there giving it the “my nan died of COVID” so if there’s a sympathy vote, the Spanish out here snorting it up like a Coke head at a rave

I think what people may find endearing in Daði is that he's quite humble and doesn't really want sympathy (e.g. his "if people could stop asking us how awful we're feeling, that would be nice" tweet) which may actually have the opposite effect. People are often more sympathetic to people who aren't asking for sympathy than the ones who blatantly use it to their advantage

But then again I imagine this only applies to people who actually follow the behind-the-scenes stuff. I had no idea about Blas' grandma but I think it's hard for people to ignore the fact that Iceland's green room isn't in the main arena so they'll be more inclined to find out, prompting them to feel sympathetic when they read about the situation if they didn't know about it already.

He said it loud and clear on stage during SF2 when they did the preview for his track. Half of the continent know!

Sadly No. The BBC has it geoblocked. Only like 5 countries can’t watch that stream and the UK and US are the two I can remember off the top of my Head.

I think Iceland will pick up votes on the back of last years song with it been a hit but I cant see it doing more than 5th. I know Cyprus as I said is my fave song but it looks like it has zero chance so I really dont know who I'd be happy to see win which will probably change tonight but I think I want a country that has yet to win to do it and in that category Malta seem to have the best chance.

From a betting point of view Belguim and Albania finishing top 10 will give me nice winnings and Cyprus finishing top 5. I have other bets on but wont pay aswell as these.

So my usual pre-final "where are we going next year?" speculation post is here for your nerve, exploring the possibilities for each potential winner.

Italy

If Italy win, as the plan was for 2017, odds are the contest will be in Turin (which the delegation has said was their preferred option for last time if they won) with their biggest and most modern indoor concert venue with Milan a close second even though their arena is technically outside the city limits in "Assago". Rome's is a bit too small and the other concert venue option in Pesaro is a bit too far away.

France

If France get the win then one would assume that Paris would be the frontrunner for hosting duties but if they felt like they needed to move it to somewhere else, Lyon and Montpellier would be the other potential options

Switzerland

There's decently sized arenas in Bern and Zurich. Geneva could work but their arenas a bit on the small side

Ukraine

See the discussions in 2017. Kyiv has the best venue and infrastructure but if they don't want it a third time then Lviv or Odessa are the next best thing.

Iceland

There's technically venues with a big enough capacity for them in Reykjavík that says they've had attendances of 15,000 standing room only gigs but I might have to defer to jafet on this one since I can't find any up to date interior pictures of it.

Malta

Slightly more complicated for Malta as there is technically a venue in Ta'Qali (a good drive away from Valletta/St Julians where basically all the hotels are) that says it can have up to 22,000 spectators but it is, essentially, a semi-permanent tent structure

He said it loud and clear on stage during SF2 when they did the preview for his track. Half of the continent know!

Oh lmao tbh I didn't listen to his interview with the hosts  I suppose that may work for sympathy votes too then but I really doubt he's the only contestant to have lost a loved one to Covid-19

Kórinn, Laugardalshöllin and Egilshöll (most likely) can all host upwards of 15.000 standing. Bieber was in Kórinn with IIRC 18-20k people two nights in a row both sitting and standing. We get this question all the time and it's always the same answer from RUV: we can host if we win. Australia even asked us to host in case they ever win and AFAIK we accepted the proposal. Link (in Icelandic)

^ Not sure France would go with Paris now that they've announced they're hosting Junior Eurovision there in December  Think they may go the same way that the Dutch did with Amsterdam in that it already has enough tourism and use it as a way to boost somewhere else perhaps.

I'm surprised at how quickly Iceland are being written off by some people (both on here and elsewhere) when they're supposedly the 'lost winners' of 2020 (which I still don't like them being seen as, we didn't get to the rehearsal stage last year and we've seen how much they can change things, Ukraine were not seen as a contender before rehearsals this year)...the song isn't that different and as a package it's basically the same thing? I don't think sympathy votes are much of a thing at Eurovision but if it's a tight race, even an extra 15-20 points could swing it and I don't really see a negative impact to them not performing live in terms of result with how well it's blended together.

I can’t call a Rank but I can see San Marino blitzing the televote and getting pure f***ed by the Jury vote and barely holding on to the top 10. like the result of KM-H from 2019

Kate performed better in the jury than the televote.

I can also see San Marino been similar to Norways Keiino and be hugely popular with televoters (maybe not to the same level and win the televote) and get royally screwed by the juries.
I’m fully expecting my predictions to be way off  but I’d be surprised if Italy is top 5 with the juries as a rock song because they tend to be quite polarising. How often has that happened in a final? I mainly based it off Turkey 2010 which I feel is a similarly accessible rock song and they placed 8th with the juries.

Final prediction-

1 Malta - Destiny

2 Italy - Maneskin

3 Iceland - Dadi Freyr

4 Switzerland - Gjon’s Tears

5 Cyprus - Elena Tsagrinou

6 Sweden - Tusse

7 France - Barbara Pravi

8 Ukraine - Go_A

9 Norway - TIX

10 Russia - Manizha

11 Finland - Blind Channel

12 Portugal - The Black Mamba

13 Lithuania - The Roop

14 Serbia - Hurricane

15 Bulgaria - Victoria

16 San Marino - Senhit

17 Azerbaijan - Efendi

18 Belgium - Hooverphonic

19 Israel - Eden Alene

20 Greece - Stefania

21 Albania - Anxhela Peristeri

22 Germany - Jendrik

23 The Netherlands - Jeangu Macrooy

24 Moldova - Natalia Gordienko

25 Spain - Blas Canto

26 United Kingdom - James Newman

Hard to pick between the first two- Italy probably have the televote advantage but I feel like Malta gets a huge jury score which hands them the win. The rest could end up just about anywhere, I’m hopeful Ukraine can do well with the public but I don’t trust the juries to get behind it

3.Iceland.

4.France.

I feel like the top 7 or so could basically be in any order it's wild, but I do think it's between France and Italy for the win.

Excited for tonight - this will be the first time watching Eurovision alone which will be a shame but still going to make the most out of the evening. Managed to avoid hearing any of the songs besides the UK's entry so looking forward to hearing lots of new music this evening!

I have no idea how these decisions are made but we're hosting the Olympics in Paris in 3 years (for which there is a load of transport infrastructure being built that I personally find really exciting but that's by-the-by) and it would make sense to hold a smaller - but still big - event as a warm-up for it. Maybe? idk

But I'm getting ahead of myself and have no idea if France will win. Apart from them I've only heard Britain (so boring AGAIN) and Moldova so I'm looking forward to going into this fresh!
