I had no idea Stay was #1 for 8 weeks, would've guessed 4 at the absolute most! :o

Out of all the long chart toppers up to the end of the 90s, Stay was probably the luckiest as its sales were never as high as an 8 week #1 suggests. But still, you only have to beat the competition in a given week so it did it none the less *.*

I was shocked to watch the old TOTP episodes to see Shakespheres Sister had hits well before ‘Stay’ was released! Wonder if that’s the reason why Bananarama fell away!

Two chart toppers from 1998 made the top 3 with this the lesser favoured. Still it gets maximum points from Hide&Seek which helps it to Bronze position on our rundown!

yay happy that Cher is not #1 :) good comeback but nowhere near the top imho

so decent top 2 with Oasis vs Madonna!! :o

“Stay” is just so magical for so many reasons - thanks for posting their debut TOTP performance for it from January 1992. I love that the track just crashes into a completely different song halfway through (my favourite part) with Siobhan Fahey's on point delivery taking it in a totally different direction/song but it completely works and shows how strong a writing parternship the two songwriters had. I think the darkness is hinted at before it comes in though because you have lyrics like 'In the darkness of your dreams, you must only think of me' and 'when your pride is on the floor, I’ll make you beg for more' - which is hardly the soft and soothing words you'd expect in such a typically soaring ballad but IMO a really true portrayal of the darker side of love and loss. The song kinda destroyed them sadly but it epitomises the strength of their partnership - far stronger together than the sum of their parts.

As Colm mentions, it's not even the strongest single from Hormonally Yours which is a testament to how good that album is - and the previous single “Goodbye Cruel World” flopped in at No.59 a few months previous so it's amazing that it ever got to see the light of day let alone become such a huge worldwide hit.

Looking forward to the Top 2!

Believe is my favourite of the 3 I didn't vote for in the top 10. The vocoder gimmick wouldn't have worked if it hadn't been a strong song and performance to begin with. Also have to admire it holding at #1 while 20 other songs entered the Top 5 over those 7 weeks in 1998 (as many as during Bryan Adams' 16 weeks).

I'd love Don't Look Back In Anger to win, but I think it's more likely to be Frozen by a country mile.

I used to love 'Believe', vocoder and all, but I've slowly tired of it over the years so really pleased that we have wound up with this top 2

A bit late to the party, but a shame to see my 30-pointer (Sinead O'Connor) just narrowly miss the top 10 in 11th place ... I honestly thought it would have made the top 10, but I guess missing out by just one place was close enough. Still a great top 10 overall!

I still love Your Woman - I actually didn't even know that Dua Lipa had recently sampled it so that didn't have any bearing on my vote (yeah I know, I need to brush up on my present day pop knowledge!), I honestly just voted for what I saw as a very unique and memorable song that brings back some great memories for me.

Stay is gorgeous and I am glad to see it so high. Believe and Baby One More Time are great songs too, and great to see all of them do so well in this rate.

Looking forward to seeing which track will win!

just realised Stay was also pretty big in the US peaking at #4

and that afterwards I Don't Care peaked at #55 in the US

this is their UK discography:

You’re history/7

Run silent/54

Dirty mind/71

Goodbye cruel world/59

Stay/1

I don’t care/7

Goodbye cruel world/32 (re-issue)

Hello/14

My 16th apology/61

I can drive/30

Stay/12 (re-entry)

Siobhan Fahey also had a #95 hit called Pulsatron in 2005

Believe is a great song and it was such a triumph for Cher to score a monster hit so deep into her career, but I also became bored of it.

In the 2010s version my 29 and 30 were nowhere, so amazed to have picked the Top 2 this time! :cheer: My guess is that my 29 will win but we’ll see.

Don't Look Back in Anger to win please!

amazing top 5, they've all topped my personal charts - except Madonna (the timing wasn't quite right, it was Beautiful Stranger & The Power Of Goodbye that topped my charts, but it should have been Frozen and Ray Of Light as well. Timing is everything.....!

I still think pretty much all of them are 10/10 moments

A fine bunch of number ones especially the classic dance tunes that dominated the summer of 98!
