Posted August 11, 20213 yr On the back of selling out the O2 Arena in 12 minutes, Wizkid looks set to achieve his first top 40 hit as a lead artist with 'Essence'. I'm surprised it's took his this long, he's an absolute massive name in African music but Burna Boy has seemed to have much more success than him when it comes to the UK charts. jipQpjUA_o8
August 14, 20213 yr Bieber was not needed on this at all I don’t need him ruining one of my favourites songs of this year .
August 14, 20213 yr Bieber's fine on it IMO, he doesn't add lots but I don't think he ruins it either. Song is decent if inessential either way for me. (nevertheless, the point is to increase the song's reach more than anything I expect, a job that it's already doing extremely well)
August 14, 20213 yr Not heard the Bieber version but I really hope that doesn't become the de facto version - we've waited 5 years for another song by just African artists to make the Top 40 and that stat would be somewhat ruined if the general public end up just associating the song with Bieber.

The song is great on its own accord I don’t want this Bieber version to overshadow it .
August 24, 20213 yr this song makes my bussy not so much pop but slowly bloom Edited August 24, 20213 yr by dhwhore

August 25, 20213 yr The Bieber comments are fair but work both ways. Pretty sure everyone in the UK at least associates Despacito with Bieber, but at the same time if it wasn't for Bieber these people would likely have never listened to the song in the first place so...
August 25, 20213 yr 'Essence' was already becoming a UK hit even before the Bieber feature was added though so it's not exactly the same situation as that.
August 25, 20213 yr Actually from memory Despacito was already charting before the Bieber feature so they are somewhat comparable. Just that they obviously became much bigger afterwards (well we still don't know how Essence will ultimately perform but at the very least Bieber's involvement has certainly helped even the original version).
August 25, 20213 yr The first week 'Despacito' charted in the UK top 100 was definitely after the Bieber remix was released (the remix dropped on 17th April 2017 and it first charted on W/E 27th April, so that included 4 days of tracking for the remix). It may have been making some very minor chart moves before that - I don't really care to dig out old iTunes/Spotify threads to check for this :kink: - but nowhere near as much as 'Essence' which was already a top 40 hit and rising with 9 weeks in the top 100 before the remix came out!
August 26, 20213 yr Ah yes you are right. I was confusing it with the accreditation. The first 3 weeks in the top 100 Bieber wasn't being credited but yes it was his version they always played on the chart show.
August 26, 20213 yr Oh yeah, I had forgotten that they didn't originally credit Bieber on it (and then made the rare decision to actually change the website to credit him when it got to #1).
August 28, 20213 yr Does this sample something? Sounds like it does but not sure what. I think it has that Loleatta Holloway 'Love Sensation' sample in it that's in quite a few other songs as well (like Black Box - 'Ride On Time' and Chase & Status - 'Blind Faith') anyway I absolutely love this, smooth as butter
August 28, 20213 yr What was the last one? New Girl by Reggie and Bollie! (although even they had settled in the UK when that song charted)
