He gets a full verse in, melody and all, then pauses. “Songs are weird things,” he says. “How so?” an interviewer asks. “They just come and go,” Sheeran says, smiling. “And they never give you any warning.” For Sheeran, they seem to come pretty reliably. Born in 1991 in Halifax, England, he started out gigging on the UK pub circuit before releasing his first studio album, +, in 2011, and has since become one of the most unstoppable singer-songwriters in music, forging a light blend of folk, pop, hip-hop and dance that feels slick but lived-in, intimate but universal. Whether on his own (“Sing”, “The A Team”, “Shape of You”, “Perfect”) or in collaboration with artists from Taylor Swift to Eminem to Justin Bieber, Sheeran has a unique ability to strike a chord that feels both bittersweet and redemptive, good-natured and genuine: the hopeless romantic who convinces you he might just be right. In 2017, he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, touching Prince Charles on the arm while shaking his hand—a breach of royal protocol, and an appealingly human one at that. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2011 03 The A Team -1- MILLION SELLER 2011 35 Hush Little Baby (Wretch 32 feat. August 20, 20215 yr  Future chart hit? Shawn Mendes and Tainy Summer Of Love 1st single from forthcoming studio album Released: 20th August 2021 Label: Island Records Video v9lZ2MEx8oU Biography Shawn Mendes Shawn Mendes once said the best advice he ever got about how to handle pre-show jitters came from his then-tourmate Taylor Swift. “Just remember,” Swift said. “Everyone’s here to have fun.” Fun? Yeah, sure. But they were also there to see Mendes perform, share his feelings, bare his soul. “When you’re writing something super-honest and about people you care about and things you’ve been through, the last thing you want to do is re-live upsetting experiences,” Mendes told Apple’s Music around the release of his 2018 self-titled album. “But that’s the music that travels and connects with people.” And therein lies the rub. Soulful but soft, wholesome without sounding like he’s hiding something, Mendes is the rare artist who has managed to find audiences in both the teen-pop and adult-contemporary set, blending singer-songwriter conventions with the lighter sides of R&B and dance music, bucking trends in part by ignoring them to begin with. Born in the Toronto suburbs in August 1998 (a Leo—confident and optimistic), Mendes started out by uploading six-second covers of pop songs onto the video-sharing service Vine. Like Justin Bieber on YouTube before him, he navigated the leap from covers to original material, from making content to forging a career, modelling himself on the sound of artists, like John Mayer and Ed Sheeran—superstars whose charm lies, in part, in how un-super they seem. Within a couple of years, he released his first album, Handwritten. Success was huge and immediate. Illuminate arrived in 2016, followed by Shawn Mendes in 2018, marking transitions toward adult themes—anxiety, sexuality—without shedding the brightness or earnestness that made him appealing to begin with. “The hardest thing in the world is to wake up in the morning and be, like, ‘Today I’m me, regardless of how big of a song “Stitches” was,’” Mendes told Apple Music, referring to his 2015 breakthrough single. “The best way to do it is to ignore that and take your step forward in what you think sounds amazing. And that’s kind of all you can do.” - Apple Music Tainy The producer, songwriter, and beat wizard known as Tainy is that rare creature: a chart-topping artist who also happens to be one of pop’s most future-forward forces. Though he came up in reggaetón’s first wave, he’s since helped usher in the genre’s breezier, more sonically diverse iteration, influenced by R&B, trap, trance, heavy metal, and more. Born Marco Masís in 1989 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tainy signed with the powerhouse reggaetón production duo Luny Tunes when he was just 15 years old. While apprenticing at their studio, he witnessed the genre’s biggest names crafting hits, including Don Omar, Ivy Queen, and Tego Calderón. He made his production debut on the influential reggaetón compilation Más Flow 2 (2005), followed by 2006’s Los Benjamins, which led to a co-producer role on Wisin & Yandel’s 2007 release Los Extraterrestres—a massive coup for any teenager. His early collaborations with the duo proved successful, including addictive dance-floor numbers like “Pam Pam” and “Abusadora” (for which he won a Latin Grammy). But Masís was not content to rest on his laurels. A voracious consumer of music, he grew increasingly inspired by American producers like Timbaland, whose complex, next-level beats found commercial success. His own experiments bore fruit: He produced all but three tracks on J Balvin’s adventurous 2018 release Vibras and helped make Bad Bunny’s debut album the riotous success it was. Perhaps his biggest success was co-producing Cardi B’s 2018 hit “I Like It,” on which his touch updated a boogaloo vamp with undeniable 21st-century swagger. He continues to shape reggaetón’s evolution into the 2020s, elevating new artists with his talent incubator NEON16 and producing Justin Bieber’s left-field R&B banger “Habitual” in 2020. - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History Shawn Mendes 2014 99 Life Of The Party -1- 2014 09 Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) (The Vamps feat. August 20, 20215 yr LOL @ everyone claiming Ed was a flop/below his usual standards in week 1 and here we are on week 8 I don't think anyone called him a flop in week 1 but he was below his usual standards in week 1. That's not undone by how well he's done since, anyone can tell it's been massive.
August 20, 20215 yr I don't think anyone called him a flop in week 1 but he was below his usual standards in week 1. That's not undone by how well he's done since, anyone can tell it's been massive. Several people did in jest or otherwise. I don’t think he was below his usual standards? Just below the ever critical BJ standards for different artists. The market changes so much and what was once a given cant continually be repeated in the streaming dominated era. Anyway here’s to a double dose of Ed in the charts next week :cheer:
August 20, 20215 yr Several people did in jest or otherwise. I don’t think he was below his usual standards? Just below the ever critical BJ standards for different artists. The market changes so much and what was once a given cant continually be repeated in the streaming dominated era. Anyway here’s to a double dose of Ed in the charts next week :cheer: He was below his usual week 1 standards - Shape of You did 226,808 and Castle on the Hill 193,744 in the same week in 2017 (and the market hasn't really changed since then). Even more recently, I Don't Care did 123,825. Bad Habits was down from that - it didn't do badly in week 1, and it certainly wasn't a flop, but it was lower than his previous lead single openings for sure. That said, it has held up better. (for what it's worth, I like Bad Habits and am an Ed fan, I've seen him live and he was excellent)
August 20, 20215 yr Do you guys think that Bad Habits is better than the majority of the songs on the chart?
August 20, 20215 yr Shape Of You was one of those once in a generation songs that's unprecedently massive. I don't think we'll ever see sales like that ever again, even on Adele's comeback single. It was also after a relatively long break (by Ed's standards) whereas now it doesn't really feel like he's been away at all which could explain why Bad Habit's didn't quite have the astronomically high opening week.
August 20, 20215 yr Shape Of You did more than 130k pure sales in week 1, whereas nothing other than charity singles can even do 30k in a week now, and 100k in streaming points takes a lot more people to play it enough times, so he was never going to come remotely close to that 226k opening.
August 20, 20215 yr I don't think anyone expected him to come close to Shape of You's opening either tbf
August 20, 20215 yr Fair point about I Don't Care having a bigger opening, though personally I think the No. 6 era ended up cooling the anticipation for new material right from the start this time around.
August 20, 20215 yr The Killers getting a 7th UK No 1 album and Brandon Flowers getting his 9th overall No 1 Album - a 100% hit rate has probably further cemented their claim to be the 'best British Band to come out of America' especially as it's now 17 years since Hot Fuss came out.
August 20, 20215 yr Was working so missed this today. Top 10 for Talk About and Industry Baby is great news. PinkPanthress and Clean Bandit/Topic in the Top 40 is also decent. Hope they both climb higher and Need To Know and Kiss My (Uh Oh) can break the Top 10 barrier next. Tonal Racket can disappear anytime. Edited August 20, 20215 yr by Dot Branning
