September 6, 20213 yr With respect, I don't think Gaga has the sway to be comparable with Madonna, definitely not yet. Even at her height she was divisive. Ultimately she has had two top successful eras, a successful movie soundtrack, and Chromatica decently successful with a big boost from Rain on Me's Ari feature. Rihanna has had a lot more than that before we get to Madonna herself.
September 6, 20213 yr Rihanna has had a lot more than that before we get to Madonna herself. Because Rihanna has more albums out and triple the amount of singles Gaga has released, but sales alone aren't enough for you to be called the queen of pop and Gaga has more than just sales.
September 6, 20213 yr I would contend that sales are a pretty big indicator. I don't think sales tell the full picture anymore and haven't for quite some time — the sustaining cultural impact that Rihanna and Beyoncé have had would be negated by their sales in comparison to artists like Taylor Swift, Adele etc.
September 6, 20213 yr Anyway, I'm glad we all agree that Madonna is the Queen and will be until she's not here to wear the crown anymore.
September 6, 20213 yr Anyway, I'm glad we all agree that Madonna is the Queen and will be until she's not here to wear the crown anymore. Not all of us agree on that ;)
September 6, 20213 yr I would contend that sales are a pretty big indicator. So is Justin Bieber bigger than Justin Timberlake? Is Drake bigger than the Beatles? :hic:
September 6, 20213 yr I love Rihanna but she’s no where near as involved in the making of her music as what Madonna is/was. A lot of her material she wasn’t even writer of I think to be the Queen or best in your field you have to be the driving force behind your material. Of the current females in pop it’s Gaga and Taylor who can rival Madonna for being that driving force behind their material and for having versatility crossing genres too. With Rihanna, Rated R and ANTI are the only real albums what Rihanna’s done what feel like a full body of work where she had creative control completely. I love her don’t get me wrong but shes not in line with the likes of Madonna. She’s sort of more like Britney in a way. A massive hit maker for sure but not worthy of a title like that and neither is Beyoncé as she’s sort of heavily reliant on others in getting her hits especially her more pop focused hits, she’s not really as involved in the writing side of stuff as what Madonna is or Gaga/Taylor you only have to hear demos of some of her hits to know that her input isn’t all that  . Madonna is currently the Queen and it’s Gaga and Taylor from the current females who can live up to that title. (Purely just my opinion). Edited September 6, 20213 yr by Jord
September 6, 20213 yr I like Taylor but she is limited to her songwriting. She never took risks in her career like Gaga did, not to mention the huge disparity in their vocal abilities.
September 6, 20213 yr Sometimes such a title is personal. Queen of pop can relate to people in different ways for different reasons and it is not always sales related. Including sales doesn't always paint a real picture either and using Madonna as an example her last few releases would rule her out of that title. Madonna is a legendary artist and has served numerous songs I love and has an astonishing career. That said,Kylie, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey all have a greater amount of songs I prefer. Is it fair to suggest the Queen of Pop title changes from decade to decade?

I agree with this RE: Rihanna! As much as I love her, she's a hit making machine first and foremost (or rather has hits made for her that she records) whereas Madonna was a trend-setter and evolutionary, transformational album/hits/video/tour/film artist through each era of her career.
September 7, 20213 yr Author When considering a album/hits/video/tour/film artist, I can see where Gaga's name has come from because she is the one artist of now that ticks all of these boxes (Beyoncé too I guess). However, she's only just passed a decade into her career. Many music listeners are much older than this and so Gaga has only been around for a fraction of our music listening lives - Madonna far surpasses and outlives this time frame. Therefore, in a few decades, if Gaga is still ticking these boxes then yeah the throne can be hers but currently, no one apart from Madonna has those aspects and the time to cement their worth.
September 7, 20213 yr Madonna was being referred to as the Queen of Pop by Rolling Stone from the mid-'80's - that's really early on in her career as a superstar, and so time isn't just a factor, it's about huge global domination - from 1985-91, Madonna was everywhere, kids at school had her posters up, wore badges, huge crowds waited outside her hotel and she was arguably the most famous woman on the planet (bar Diana), and was on every magazine cover after cover, sold out huge worldwide tours and her chart achievements in a pre-download era were unrivaled. Her global reach, her dominance, and her influence and cultural impact are why she was and still is the Queen of Pop. No other female has since achieved that. Some have had great sales, but who has had the huge world tours (biggest solo touring artist of all time) - it's Madonna. Not anyone else. Who's the biggest selling female artist of all time... Madonna. Can I remind people (especially one obvious troll), that this is a Madonna forum - and whilst being a superfan of other artists is commendable, the facts don't lie, however much you want them to!!!! Madonna was only the female standout of her time because there wasn't an artist like Gaga in her time. There wasn't a female artist capable of singing, composing, dancing, producing, acting and directing like Gaga does. Madonna's rivals were: - Cyndi Lauper, the Ke$ha of the time, a good string of hits during the first two albums but irrelevant after that. - Whitney, the Rihanna of the time, a hitmaker, but not the songwriter of her own stuff (and without the powerful vocals). - Paula Abdul, Katy Perry of the time, several #1 hits over a short period of time but no major awards or vocal talent, forgotten over the years. - Kylie, the Britney of the time, bad singer with good numbers but never enough to make Madonna feel threatened. - Janet, the Beyoncé of the time, talented to dance and sing but that's it. - Celine Dion, the Adele of the time, huge sales and incredible vocals but nothing else. Also, it's not fair to compare Madonna and Gaga's sales. Back in Madonna's time there was no piracy, internet, Spotify, Youtube or whatever. You had to go to the stores to buy your favorite album or single if you wanted to listen to it, nowadays you have the complete catalog of your favorite artist in the palm of your hands in a matter of seconds, and you don't even have to pay for it due to piracy and free trial periods that streaming platforms do to attract customers. Selling music nowadays is extremely difficult, much harder than 30, 40 or 50 years ago and that's a fact, don't even try it. Edited September 7, 20213 yr by Adelita
September 7, 20213 yr And again..... Can I remind people (especially one obvious troll), that this is a Madonna forum - and whilst being a superfan of other artists is commendable, the facts don't lie, however much you want them to!!!! Here's a little poll for you from 2011 when Gaga was hot-ish, and M not so much. Madonna got 5 times as many votes as Gaga. Gaga as The Queen of Pop?!!!! It's never going to happen, love, despite you wanting it to be so. You bet on the wrong horse, Gaga will never be the Queen of Pop. Ever. She's bloody talented though (I don't care for her voice), but her songs aren't so bad. Enjoy them, be happy and enjoy Gaga's success, she's great, just not Madonna-great..... https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-li...2/8-cher-77300/
