Biography

Melding urgent, melodic indie rock with the heart of a singer/songwriter and socially conscious lyrics, Newcastle native Sam Fender rose to British acclaim in late 2017 when he appeared on the coveted BBC Sound of 2018 list and was subsequently signed to Polydor Records. His first album, Hypersonic Missiles, arrived in 2019.

Born and raised in North Shields, just outside of Newcastle, Fender came from a musical family. After gigging locally, he was discovered by Ben Howard's manager, who helped pave the road for Fender's debut single, "Play God." Moody in tone and socially conscious, it was followed by two more singles, "Greasy Spoon" and "Millennial," before the BBC named Fender along with acts like Sigrid and Lewis Capaldi for their Sound of 2018 list. Tours with Hozier and Catfish and the Bottlemen followed, as did 2018 singles like "Leave Fast" and "That Sound," both of which later appeared on his EP Dead Boys, released by Polydor in November of that year.

At the beginning of 2019, Fender entered his own studio in his hometown of North Shields to record his debut album with friend and producer Bramwell Bronte. He won the Brit Awards' Critics' Choice honor and made his U.S. television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! before Interscope/Polydor issued the resulting Hypersonic Missiles in September of 2019. - iTunes

What s this crazy indie sound Im hearing at number 26???

FENDER!!!!!

So pleased he has finally got a Top 40 hit... and this song is just immense!!

The sax just reminds me of Bruce Springsteen in his 80s pomp!!
I find odd this is his first ever top 40 single. :o
This is sounding better than I remember (from the one play I gave it at the time it came out )! Good for Sam to get a top 40 at last.

Absolutely chuffed that Sam Fender has achieved a top 40 hit for the first time!!

I was obsessed with 'Play God' two years ago but I think this is my favourite that he's released since.

This thread is in terminal decline. There is barely any discussion

blame it on Adele :kink:

I'm listening but just can't bother much talking considering I'm not liking that much any of the songs played so far, so I don't want to sound like a broken record.

I'm here though to potentially celebrate Elton/Dua #1 :cheer:

Biography

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex, and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Like the work of collaborator Lana Del Rey or early booster (and fellow Toronto native) Drake, Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy, and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” - Apple Music

Biography

Dermot Kennedy’s rip-roaring, free-flowing folk-pop grew out of years singing over rowdy crowds at local bars and open mics and in the streets of Dublin. Born in 1991, the singer/songwriter was raised in the small Irish village of Rathcoole, where he began writing songs as a teenager before studying classical music at Maynooth University and forming folk band Shadows and Dust. He soon set off on his own, busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street, the same spot favored by famous street musicians like Glen Hansard, The Frames frontman and Once actor. Kennedy built up his raspy, throat-ripping howls on the pavement, but found his largest following online after he self-released romantic ballads like 2015’s “An Evening I Will Not Forget” and 2016’s “After Rain”. A larger audience exposed him to a few key producers, including Stephen Kozmeniuk (Koz) and Mike Dean, both of whom have helped enhance the poetic intimacy of Kennedy’s songwriting with rumbling beats and expansive electronic production. Finding a delicate balance between soaring folk and understated hip-hop has been the key to Kennedy’s sound, starting with his 2019 debut album, Without Fear. His strengths come in turning quiet melodies into rousing anthems, including “Power Over Me”, a propulsive paean that captures the intoxicating rush of becoming enraptured, and “Outnumbered”, which feels almost gospel-like in its cathartic chorus. Meanwhile, his voice—a slightly weathered mix of grit and gravel—ties it all together, bringing the raw intensity he learned as a busker to pop charts around the world. - Apple Music
