NO 84- 49 POINTS

Jack Your Body Steve Silk Hurley (Voter: JulianT- 17 points, Jackjones- 6 points, AH Gold- 10 points, Danvember- 16 points)- No 1 for 2 weeks in January 1987

A history maker as the first “house” No 1 in the UK and the first to sell its majority on 12” single. However it should never had been a No 1 as the 12” overran the 25 minute rule that the BPI had imposed at the time and therefore its sales were ineligible. It wasn’t brought to Gallup’s attention in time however and the song was already at No 1 so the 12” sales were allowed to stand. It's also a first loss for Danvember meaning that all voters have now lost points!

NO 83- 49 POINTS

I Want To Know What Love Is Foreigner (voter: JulianT- 5 points, Dot Branning- 8 points, King Rollo- 10 points, Jester- 26 points)- No 1 for 3 weeks in January/ February 1985

The song that knocked Band Aid from the top and a power ballad classic.

Getting to a stage where good songs are dropping out but happy to see that no more of my absolute favourites have fallen since Kraftwerk

Although poor Fiesta, losing their 30 and 29 pointers in quick succession :o

surprised I lasted this long as I expected Jack Your Body to finish a fair bit lower down. yay for it having another big supporter.

Nooo thats Heart-alone 😅🙃😇

sad too see Perfect go, great little song

the parent album was great too

Not keen on any of the latest three songs that have dropped off so no big losses there.

I probably appreciate I Want To Know What Love Is more now, but as a kid it was a bit of a yawn-fest No.1 for me.

This is my favourite batch of 3 dropouts so far! Perfect is a great song though I didn’t quite find space for it. IWTKWLI is schmaltzy for sure but brilliant and exhilarating at the same time.

As for Jack Your Body I only discovered it quite recently and it was a proper jaw hitting the floor moment. I can’t believe how far ahead of its time it sounds. I suspected Dan would have thrown it some points too but knew it wouldn’t get that high so wanted to show it some good appreciation.

I like the way I Want To Know What Love Is builds up towards the gospel choir at the end. Waiting For A Girl Like You is another good one by Foreigner.
I think Buzzjack needs a power ballad rate.

Feel free - was considering starting a power ballad thread anyway!

How apt JackJones gave a few points to Jack Your Body! Its certainly iconic as an early house hit and amazing that it got to #1!

Foreigner 'I Want To Know What Love Is' is a good song but I prefer Mr Mister's 'Broken Wings' and John Farnham's 'You're The Voice' for epic 80s rock ballads! 'You're The Voice' though I have to say was very much influenced by 'I Want To Know What Love Is' two years earlier I think, though, it even has a choir at the end!

No great losses there, I quite like “Jack Your Body” but it gets a bit repetative after a while. Like all eras, the best examples of the popular genre of the time were underperforming - Joe Smooth's “Promised Land” is a FAR better example of Chicago House, but that gem stalled at #56. We do at least get a better example of UK House later in the same year but as that hasn't appeared yet.. I'll keep shtum!

Nicely understated "a bit repetitive" there  "annoyingly repetitive after 6 listens" would be my take. The British house chart-topper is a top-notch timeless classic, still exciting - top 50 or I will sulk....! :D

Whoops I've not read this thread for quite a while so have just been speed skimming through the last 12 pages... I think out of the songs outside the top 100 the only one I'm really shocked by / think I'd have given high points to myself if I'd voted (unless I missed/forgot anything) is 'Prince Charming', literally what at Jade being the only person to vote for that! I guess Kraftwerk and The Timelords (dodgy sample aside) are highlights as well. Lmao at Joe Dolce actually getting points, AlexRange never change. (It obviously shouldn't have blocked 'Vienna' from #1 but I have a small soft spot for it x)

A few better songs dropping out now that we've got into the top 100, really like 'Only You', 'House Of Fun', 'Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart', 'Too Shy' and 'Rock Me Amadeus' in particular.

Also late but I do not accept any slander against 'A Spaceman Came Travelling', one of the best Christmas songs. 'Lady In Red' on the other hand is indeed not great. x

NO 82- 50 POINTS

Especially For You Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (Voter: Jason- 9 points, Gooddelta- 14 points, Gezza- 1 point, Last Dreamer- 26 points)- No 1 for 3 weeks in January 1989

The ultimate duet at the time it was released and tied in with their on screen marriage in “Neighbours”- only nasty Cliff Richard spoiled the Christmas party but ultimately this outsold “Mistletoe And Wine” and is more popular on the forum too! Kylie has another two left in the rate but this is Jason’s best performer.

NO 81- 51 POINTS

Red Red Wine UB40 (Voter: JulianT- 20 points, West- 2 points, Danvember- 11 points, Colm- 3 points, Shoat- 15 points)- No 1 for 3 weeks in September 1983

Tr66qHR.jpg

UB40’s first chart topper was just like their other two- a cover! This time taking a 1967 Neil Diamond track and after performing it at the Nelson Mandela concert in 1988 the song went all the way to No 1 in the US.
