21 January marked 20 years since 'In Your Eyes' was released as the second single from 'Fever' in Australia. Written by Richard Stannard and Julian Gallagher, the song takes on a harder attitude than its predecessor 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' with its thumping bassline and heavy Europe influence. It was naturally a challenge to follow-up such a huge smash - in fact, the European release was delayed by a month due to the ongoing success of 'Head' - but critics agreed 'In Your Eyes' was a worthy successor. It debuted at #1 in Australia, followed by Top 10/20 peaks across Europe, including a #3 debut in the UK. It was bigger success on UK radio where it placed at #1 even before its physical release and remained at #1 for five weeks. The music video was again directed by Dawn Shadforth and extended the futuristic theme, including more robotic choreography and neon lighting that captured the throbbing club sound.

One of the best pop songs ever without a doubt. Hypnotic, funky, groovy, sensual, everything a perfect pop song should be. Still sounds so fresh two decades later, the styling and colours in the video are on point.

They REALLY don't make 'em like this anymore.

I do like in your eyes and always did but i also always much preferred ,love at first sight and cant get you out of my head. For me i was so disappointed love at first sight wasn't the 2nd single but it all worked out well, the problem with Fever and its a good complaint is there are so many good songs to choose from and because of that in your eyes isnt in my top songs from the album and that's not to take away from the song its more to do with the high standard of the album. I was also really disappointed when in your eyes didnt go top 2 as i was sure it would be number 2 at worst even though when released i was hoping number 1 as Kylie was just huge at that point. I think in your eyes did suffer a little bit when released as it was still getting slightly over shadowed by cant get you out of my head. When i see the light years/fever album/singles anniversaries my head gets flooded with so many great memories as it was one of the best time to be a Kylie fan as she just was so big back then in all aspects, single, album, tours, awards etch success was coming everywhere, I'm lucky that im old enough to remember the 2 different eras when Kylie was just simply massive it really was Kylie mania, her first couple of years starting out she was everywhere and again it was the same with the light years and fever time.

I remember at the time Popworld used to do their chart prediction thing on a Sunday morning for the upcoming chart, a bit like the midweeks and they had 'In Your Eyes' placed at #2 so it came as a bit of a nasty shock when I listened to the chart that week!

#3 was def a nasty and unwelcome shock.

Who was No.2 and No.1 at that time?

'In Your Eyes' is fabulous. Kylie was on the money with this era imo. This and 'Love At First Sight' I've also got on CD too *.* I do like CGYOOMH but always preferred these two.
A very credible follow up to her biggest hit. I do prefer it to love at first sight.
If she sang it at the Brits it could have made number 1 but she went (correctly) for the Iconic Can’t Get Blue Monday performance. A career highlight.

I don't think I could have put it better than this myself! Totally agree about the video - the visual and the sound of the song just match each other, it's hard to describe. It's my favourite Kylie song of all. As well as everything you've said, it's got a sass and attitude that I wish was a little more present today (as fans, we still see it, like the 'Slow'/'Love to Love You Baby' mashup at the Fashion Awards, but to the wider public they're used to seeing sweet Kylie).

This smashed it on radio, looking at its airplay chart run, but I think it's safe to say the chart performance was still hindered by the continuing success of 'Head' in the UK. Performing 'Head' at the BRITs on the same week as the release of 'In Your Eyes' probably didn't help, even though it did make sense to perform it. Perhaps they could have done a medley of the two, but the performance as it was is perfection. Would probably have been enough to hold onto the #2 spot and could have put it within touching distance of #1 ('In Your Eyes' sold 52k first week, Enrique at #2 sold 60k and Westlife at #1 sold 75k).

To be honest, they should have released the release of In Your Eyes at least a month later for Head to completely pass. A good single that should have gone to No.1 wasted in my opinion.

Just checking now and it would have to be two months later to avoid the mammoth sales of Will Young and Gareth Gates!

And the mammoth airplay of Head. :P

To be honest, they should've released in a quieter week to make sure IYE go to No.1. Little did we know, from that point, it marked a string of failures on Parlophone to push album sales, remember Secret (Take You Home) and not including Magnetic Electric in the X album?

Don't get me started on Aprodite.
