I'll be getting the blu-ray!

Reviews for this are becoming even more damning. Down to 40 on Rotton Tomatoes - still a lot of praise for Gaga though, just the directing and film itself seems to be languishing now.

Going to see this on Sunday! My friend hated it as a whole oops but still thought Gaga was brilliant as Lee and made the role her own - the movie just was badly executed. It's a pretty interesting case and surely there will be lots of debate around it which itself is always good thing. At least it's being noticed.
Eek after the first one being a critical smash the reaction to this hasn’t been very good! I’m seeing it Sunday can’t wait!

It feels like both this and House of Gucci were a case of Gaga praise but film critique.

I have annual leave on Monday so hoping to see it then! This kind of genre isn’t my bag at all but anything for Gaga!

Also why use many Gaga scenes in the trailer they knew would go viral especially with Little Monsters and just not use them in the film. It kinda looked like both her and Joaquin had mixed feelings re the final edit of the film. Still excited to see her in a new role though!

Yeah Gaga hasn't posted about the film's release and from interviews there are hints that maybe they aren't best pleased with the final director's cut. Oop-

59 on metacritic and 68 on rotten is not the definition of smash but ok.

This project is an absolute disaster with critics and audiences — the CinemaScore is the worst ever for a comic book film and the worst of the year. It’s already showing signs of collapsing at the box office. I saw it last night and was mostly confused at how much of a boring slog it was. They did nothing with Gaga and the musical sequences seemed out of place. Honestly, a massive waste of her talent.

I don’t know how they fumbled a sequel to not just a billion dollar film but also the most nominated film at the Oscars in 2020 this badly. It’s probably going to sweep Razzie nominations — unfairly or not.

I really do think they had an idea with how things were going with how quickly they’re pivoting to LG7. Smart x

Yeah, I think Gaga and her team saw this coming - she did the necessarily promo but also made her own little project beside the film preparing us to LG7. Very smart!

And no one is blaming her for this bombing. It sucks that it is flopping (comparing to the budget) but that's life.

I've mentioned this before that when it's over 60% on rotten it is considered a critical success so nearly 70% is indeed a critical success. Also It was nominated for every major awards ceremony going getting 11 which was more than any other film, nominations at the Oscars in it's release schedule. Finally with a gross of over 1 billion at the box office it was 100% a smash in every sense of the word, critically, commercially and in nominations.

I went to see this earlier today and was quite frankly a bit confused throughout the whole thing. The musical sequences don't really work at all and overall it felt very slow. Not a patch on the first one and a waste of both Gaga and Phoenix's talents!
How full the screening was? In my country the pre-sales have been decent.

It wasn't full maybe a quarter of the seats taken? It was a captioned screening though they don't tend to attract as many people although Planet of the apes and Deadpool Vs Wolverine were both packed out when I saw those captioned screenings.

I'm seeing the movie tomorrow. I always have a fascination with sequels that so firmly defy audience expectations. You can see that in, say, 1978's The Exorcist 2...and as recently as Halloween Ends. It's not that all the sequels like this are necessarily bad (well, Exorcist 2 is...). But. It's just interesting to me when filmmakers know they'll make the audience mad...and charge forward anyway. Who WANTS to make a fanbase mad? Is it bold? Is it just...unwise? I think it's interesting. And it's certainly sounding like the new Joker film falls into this camp.

Here's where I'm at before I see it. Big Gaga fan. There's nothing about it being a musical that I'm opposed to. I didn't like the first movie. I'll acknowledge Joaquin Phoenix deserved all the awards love he got for his performance...while also saying I didn't get much out of the first movie beyond it being a slog to sit through. I know a lot of people feel it's a bold vision...but I'd urge everyone to watch the early 80s movie King of Comedy. Joker is pretty intentionally inspired by that film. They both even have Robert DeNiro in them. But...for me, at least...Joker did blur the line between tribute to the earlier film and blatant rip-off. So...all that said, I'm hoping I can be one of the ones to like the sequel a smidge better than most people? It's definitely the movie to pile onto and hate at the moment.

Agree, it's a very interesting case. Some commentators suggest that this will become "a cult classic" at some point. Which is obviously too early to tell yet, but could be the case.
It was equally shit and amazing in parts. It was basically a continuation of the first film, featuring Lady Gaga breaking in to song every 10 minutes, and sometimes it was kinda cringe. There were 6 people including me and my partner in the screening I went to :manson:

I didn’t feel that many of the songs fit, there were a few moments when they worked but mostly they were just a bit strange. GaGa singing carpenters close to you was just bizarre (even if she sounds amazing). It was like it was trying to be a musicia but not quite working.

Both Phoenix and GaGa were great in their roles but it also felt like their characters weren’t really given the space to develop properly, which didn’t matter so much for Phoenix as we already have the first film but GaGa felt severely underused.

I don’t think I’ll watch the film again tbh, it’s definitely GaGa’s weakest out of the three so far and disappointing as it had the recipe for utter greatness.

I'll be getting the blu-ray!

Told your his weeks ago!! Apparently it's AWFUL and she was totally misused and underused. The songs aren't even originals! And they had GaGa! Disaster.
