I use those wikipedia lists often. Many thanks.

Great playlist, will be listening to them a lot.

One thing though, on the #3s chart could you please replace Missing - Everybody But The Girl with Missing - Everybody But The Girl Todd Terry remix/Radio Edit which was the version that led to it charting and the version most people are familiar with!

Had this list on my phone for number 5s, again if there are any oversights please let me know.

I will check through the number 3s again. Also if I have repeated any (e.g. Rereleases which actually peaked higher previously please led let me know

Jasper Carrott - Funky Moped - 1975

Keith Mitchell - Captain Beaky/Wilfred the Weasel - 1980

Headgirl - St Valentines Day Massacre (EP) - 1981

Grange Hill Cast - Just Say No - 1986

Shakin Stevens - Why Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For? - 1987

Bassheads - Is There Anybody Out There? - 1991

Ali Campbell - That Look in Your Eye - 1995

B.B.E. - Flash - 1997

Will Mellor - When I Need You - 1998

Cast from Casualty - Everlasting Love - 1998

Des Mitchell - (Welcome) to the Dance - 2000

Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue (Ringbang Remix) - 2001

Ian Van Dahl - Will I? - 2001

Bo' Selecta! - I Got You Babe/Soda Pop - 2004

Friday Hill - Baby Goodbye - 2005

Iglu & Hartley - In This City - 2008

Elyar Fox - Do It All Over Again - 2014

Immediately I notice that the Shakin' Stevens song has the wrong title listed here (first word is 'What', not 'Why') - looks like that one is available!

Hartly is also spelt wrong for 'In This City' but alas that one is not available regardless (shame as it's a great song).

Shhh the original is better

Raving I'm Raving by Shut Up And Dance (#2) is one that unfortunately isn't available on Spotify in the version that actually charted at the time presumably for the same copyright reasons that led to it been physically deleted. The remix version is quite drastically different without the prominent sample.

That's just a small point though, not to take away from your fantastic work.

Thanks for spotting that with Shakin' Stevens. I have also amended Hartly on the list, big shame it is not on Spotify, it was a favourite of mine from that era!

Just decided to put both versions of Missing in the playlist, no harm done ;)

Thank you, I was unaware of this and as a chart lover its always great to find these facts out! I have removed the song from the list.

Thanks for the kind words.

I can’t offer any constructive feedback that hasn’t already been mentioned by others here, but it’s very telling just how many of these once big hits (many of which are one hit wonders incidentally) aren’t available to stream on a platform as big as Spotify.

What might prove a useful resource to future chart researchers is links to where ones can access and discover many of these “lost” songs. I could easily work out which Now volumes contained many of the missing Spotify songs if that was ever a useful resource to anyone, though it would require either buying the CD/cassette/vinyl or paying some sort of subscription to the Now music platform to stream music from such albums. Obviously there’s YouTube as well which is free.

Thanks though for such a great guide. Maybe someone somewhere has tried to do something similar using other streaming platforms like Apple Music perhaps.

Strange that the Scooter version inspired by the Shut Up and Dance song using the same sample simply entitled 'I'm Raving' was released in 1996 (making #33 in the UK chart) and is still on Spotify!

Scooter sought clearance in advance and so didn't run into any legal difficulties. However Marc Cohn is listed as the sole writer of 'I'm Raving' meaning Scooter must have had to forgo any writers credit / royalties for the track.

Thank you, I have so far added hyperlinks to YouTube videos (mixed bag of studio recordings/live versions) for numbers 1 to 10 on the list - only song I can't find any trace on YouTube is Girls of FHM - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?

I have a free account with Amazon music (through Prime) so will see if there are any of the missing songs on there. I might even take your lead and put the most accessible Now album for as many of them as possible, to make it even more complete.

Does this link not work for you?

(Not that this is a song that particularly needs to be preserved )

Well thank goodness that forgotten gem has been found! 😅

I was using my work laptop so clearly that was blocked, don't know why 😉

Its good for completeness reasons

I say this is a massive piece of work! As others have already said, well done for committing to it and it could be a really useful resource for quite a few people. It is very interesting to get a broad flavour of the sorts of songs not currently on Spotify as these lists are determined purely by the peak chart position they happened to attain and their presence is in no way related to the genre of music or type of act that recorded it. There is a lot of charity/one-offs/talent show stuff which perhaps one might expect not to find, but also some really random 'everyday' tracks of all sorts which one would legitimately assume by now would've found their way onto a platform as prominent as this.

Not quite clear on your reasoning for extending the project beyond No 10 just to No 11 though; if that were me it'd increasingly interfere with my OCD tendencies which would eventually force me like it or not into committing to doing a further nine lists to complete the Top 20 positions! I have compiled Spotify playlists for what are believed to be the Top 100 biggest songs of each decade from the 1980s, '90s, 2000s and '10s (most of which were available, but as you found, a handful or so of those tunes are not streamable on Spotify), which function quite nicely as slightly bizarre background music that lasts most of the working day if at home. I half-fancy breaking it down further to annual playlists, perhaps Top 50s, but the work involved just puts me off, as well as the reality that not all tracks will be available and the more granular one becomes, the more gaps there may be. I know though that if I completed say the first ten years, sooner or later I'd have to find the time and inclination to do the remaining thirty! It's all or nothing for me so I'm sticking to just the decades for now!

In any case, I appreciate what must've gone into this and it's good of you to share more widely.

Thank you for the kind words! It was a bit of a passion project, inspired by my work on top 10 lists for Wikipedia, my love of chart music generally, and I thought it would be interesting to rank by chart position rather than genre etc. I thought sharing with Buzzjack would benefit the community as well so I am pleased to see the positive reaction.

Funnily enough I am aiming to do the positions from 12 to 20 and will stop there, top 20 is considered another barometer of success within the top 40, and obviously things like first look go down that far! I did number 11 because the OCC had done a list from 1966 onwards and I went through the earlier years to complete it), and I thought also it would be interesting to see which songs only just missed the top 10 by one place. I have started on number 13 as there is a list produced by the OCC correct to last year.

Progressing through numbers 12 through to 20 now :)

Really enjoying the playlists. Just to inform you on the #7s thread the correct version of Doobie Brothers - Long Train Runnin' that charted in 1993 is the Sure Is Pure single edit.
