June 12, 20223 yr Author NO 31- 146 POINTS O Superman Laurie Anderson (Voter: JulianT- 23pts, Jade- 11pts, Chez Wombat- 29pts, Chartjack2-30pts, King Rollo- 24pts, Jimwatts-23pts, *Dandy-6pts) (#2 for 1 week in October 1981 behind “It’s My Party” by Barbara Gaskin & Dave Stewart) Certainly one of the most unusual tracks to make No 2 in the decade but 5 of you loved it enough to put it in your top 10’s including Chartjack2 who gives it the maximum. June 12, 20223 yr Faith is a goodie, but it's not anywhere near my fave George track on the album. That would be One More Try, the Nile Rodgers remix of Monkey, Father Figure or Hand To Mouth. Huge American hits....not so much in the UK. O Superman did very well! Seems you either love it or hate it - which is how it was in 1981, very polarising. It's great unless you hear a lot, at which point it gets annoying quicker than most records. Holding out for Bonnie Tyler, a spot of poison for Alice & Living for Mike + The Mechanics to go out soon, please! I'll also accept Funkytown, Borderline, Little Red Corvette, Push It and Save A Prayer as also-rans to help keep the top 20 devoted to absolute classics....
June 12, 20223 yr So without 6 voters from our #1 listening group O Superman would have got all of 6 points! I think it’s absolute genius and doesn’t get annoying quickly at all! Great Top 30 anyway.
June 12, 20223 yr 'O Superman' is a fascinating chart hit *.* I remember being really taken aback hearing it for the first time, can't imagine how it must've sounded 40+ years ago. 'Faith' is a classic George hit <3 'You Win Again' and that was a strong top 2.
June 12, 20223 yr I found O Superman irritating at the time but have grown to love it since. It really stands out.
June 12, 20223 yr ^Is Crockett's Theme an absolute classic? Of course not THIS IS THE WORST POST I'VE EVER READ
June 12, 20223 yr ^Is Crockett's Theme an absolute classic? Of course not Oh, it is a classic (of course).
June 12, 20223 yr O Superman is captivating and the fact it got as high as #2 in 1981 is fantastic. Whether people bought it for the novelty or not, Laurie's lyrics seem to gently tap into the unease at her country and its place in the world - "when justice is gone, there's always force" is particularly ominous. 2/3 of the top 30 and an average over 12 points for all songs it is then!
June 12, 20223 yr O Superman reminds me of Ghost by Japan in terms of uniqueness and sounding so different and modern for the year it was released!
June 12, 20223 yr Aww, I would've loved to see O Superman amongst the top 30, but all of us at the Number 1s sessions did our job the best we could I suppose! Such a beautiful, captivating and unique song, I can't believe something like that ever got near the number 1. I first heard it when going through the 1001 songs to hear before you die and it gripped me right from it's opening bars. The war-time lyrics are still oh so relevent even today, it was incredible ahead of its time. Crockett's Theme is a worthy top 30 finalist, take your sour grapes elsewhere x
June 13, 20223 yr amazed you all like the Miami Vice song so much, I can barely remember it myself personally songs eliminated ages ago (ie Sign Your Name) are a million times better
June 13, 20223 yr So without 6 voters from our #1 listening group O Superman would have got all of 6 points! I think it’s absolute genius and doesn’t get annoying quickly at all! Great Top 30 anyway. O Superman is Art with a capital A, but have it on the radio every day for weeks and weeks and "smoking or non-smoking" (among many memorable highights) can get on my nerves - but then again I have a low tolerance for repeat plays. Even Bohemian Rhapsody, once upon a time one of my all-time faves, reached saturation point 20 years ago and I'm still sick of hearing it  I'd rather hear O Superman these days as it never gets played!

Very true about saturation PCF - actually even the songs I’ve given 30 and 29 in this I’m bored of hearing to some extent! Much more likely to give O Superman another listen.
June 13, 20223 yr O Superman never clicked with me, but I may have only heard it 2/3 times, guess I should listen some more
June 13, 20223 yr Author NO 30- 146 POINTS Crockett's Theme Jan Hammer (Voter: JackJones- 5pts, Jade- 16pts, Chez Wombat- 22pts, Gooddelta- 22pts, Jester- 22pts, Daan- 23pts, …Ready for it- 6pts, Torple- 30 pts) (#2 for 1 week in October 1987 behind “You Win Again” by Bee Gees The highest placed instrumental on our list was originally used in the “Miami Vice” TV show (hence the title) and later surfaced on Nat West ads in the 90s. Torple makes It their favourite No 2 of the decade! uKN2z-Lk6TE
