Common People and Wonderwall, both kept off the top by Robson and bloody Jerome.

In terms of close sales Better Off Alone just missing out is painful!

To use an obvious example: 'Vienna' by Ultravox was the first one to pop into my head, in terms of disparity between song quality. Of course subjective but one has definitely held up in a more favourable way than the other! On top of the Joe Dolce song it was also blocked by a John Lennon song after he died too.

This was also voted Nation's Favourite #2 in 2012. Full Top 40 countdown can be found here.

Right said fred I'm too sexy, I think it was behind bryan Adams fir a good few weeks. Groove is in the heart by Dee Lite lost out by so little to the joker by steve miller band.

I think the joker and groove had the same exact panel sales

But nit sure what was the proper difference?

I mean this is all very subjective and there's valid arguments for so many different songs, but I'd say 'Wonderwall' is a good shout - it's one of the most iconic songs of the last 30 years and I'm sure a lot of people automatically assume it was number one (in fact one of my friends did recently).
Dario G - Sunchyme mainly as it's amazing but it also would've got there if there wasn't a certain high profile death (see also Bittersweet Symphony being beaten by I'll Be Missing You and most tracks being beaten by an unforeseen event that sparks a mass buying spree, I feel that's the most objective way something can be 'robbed')

Different circumstances of course but this has made me think of P!nk's Just Give Me a Reason, ultimately blocked from #1 by... PJ & Duncan's Let's Get Ready to Rhumble  because Ant & Dec performed it on Saturday Night Takeaway the weekend before lol

Unpopular opinion but 'Peru' this year because it was at #2 for SOOOOOOO long I felt it should've had at least one week at #1! ANd it would be an achievement, the first afrobeats #1!

LIES! Absolute trash. It was a manufactured no.2 based on Cheesy Fad's payola.

I just recently discovered that Right Said Fred's 'Deeply Dippy' kept SL2's 'On A Ragga Tip' off #1 and I think that has to be a strong contender for the largest gulf in quality between the top 2 ever.

That is really bad.

Also Boyzone keeping Sash!'s 'Mysterious Times' off #1 particularly sticks out for me in that regard.

and of course Sash! in general were robbed of a #1, besides the Boyzone cockblock they just got stuck behind big hits lingering on at the top all of which aren't as good as the Sash! track they held off.

'Encore Une Fois' stuck behind the 2nd week of No Doubt 'Don't Speak'

'Ecuador' stuck behind 'I'll Be Missing You's 2nd/3rd weeks

'Stay' stuck behind the Diana tribute's 5th week

'Adelante' stuck behind Gabrielle 'Rise's 2nd week

10 weeks in the top 3 too - is that a record for a song never getting to no.1?

Ya poor Sash and he never even ended up getting a number 1 and I love all the songs you listed plus a few others.

“Terry’s Theme from Limelight” by Frank Chacksfield spent 13 weeks in the Top 3 without getting to #1 - I think that’s the record.

^ It is. Although I think Peru is the first to have 10 consecutive weeks without reaching #1.

I hadn't realised 4 of Sash!'s #2s entered behind a song holding at #1. Also, his #3 Primavera entered behind songs holding at #1 & #2, so that's 5 times he had the highest new entry without a #1, at a time when it was practically the norm for the highest new entry to be #1.
