Posted April 21, 20223 yr 21 April 2022 Official Charts Company approves first-ever NFT for UK charts inclusion The upcoming new album from The Amazons will be the first ever release containing NFT content to be eligible for the UK's Official Chart. By George Griffiths Today the Official Charts Company has approved the first-ever inclusion of an NFT product towards sales on the UK's Official Albums Chart. British band The Amazons will launch their new album with a 'Digital Boxset Edition' of the vinyl record, which includes extra content delivered digitally as an NFT. This is the very first time that an NFT can contribute towards the UK charts, an exciting development in the ever expanding digital universe of music. Martin Talbot, CEO of the Official Charts Company, said of the historic first: "We are delighted to approve this first ever NFT for Official Albums Chart inclusion, it is an incredibly exciting moment for the chart and the UK music scene. "As far as we are aware, this is the first release to include an NFT component to achieve chart approval anywhere in the world – so congratulations to The Amazons for this fantastic first. "The UK’s Official Charts have always strived to evolve as music fans change how they buy and consume their favourite music, and this is another example of how we have always sought to reflect the pioneering spirit of the music industry and, in particular, the UK scene.” An NFT (non-fungible token) is an entirely digital asset that represents real-world objects such as music or art. NFTs can be bought and sold online via cryptocurrency - it is a non-interchangeable unit of data stored in a blockchain. The NFT offering included with the sale of the new Amazons record will include one animated unreleased photograph taken from a key moment of the band’s past. Each purchaser will receive the same image for the first drop, another for the second and another for the third. This animated photograph will serve as a fan pass to further, exclusive content and will initially be non-tradeable. The Amazons will oversee three drop periods over the coming months, leading up to the album's release on September 2nd. The Reading band have enjoyed two UK Top 10 albums to date with The Amazons and Future Dust. Can anyone out there can explain this in simple words?
April 21, 20223 yr I still don’t get the appeal. I never looked into it in any great detail but I have zero interest in NFT’s.
April 21, 20223 yr I have an NFT specifically created for Martin Talbot or The Amazons if they wish to invest -
April 21, 20223 yr As much as I like The Amazons, this is disappointing :/ I will be interested to see how many sales it contributes to the chart though.
April 21, 20223 yr Yeah I still don't completely get how NFTs work. Last time I tried to read up on them it made my head hurt a little bit
April 21, 20223 yr I think it says a lot that NFTs have been around this long and the majority of discussion around them is still 'I don't understand what an NFT is', closely followed by 'NFTs are a scam / ruining the environment' etc. As I understand it an NFT is basically just a certificate of ownership of some digital good, and that certificate has some value because (?) TL;DR it's dumb and not important
April 21, 20223 yr I don't know what this going to add to the charts... any sales data, never heard of NFT until now, and the some consumers will get confused.com. The charts are already broken :D they don't need fixing again, this is more leaning towards the album charts, they need to fix the singles chart first
April 21, 20223 yr This isn't going to make any difference to the charts beyond very slightly boosting first week album sales for artists with fanbases who are dedicated enough to buy an NFT.
April 21, 20223 yr Selena must be replacing her fake cassettes with fake NFTs for her next album as we speak!! Plus the deal of the century buy one JPEG of Selena’s album cover and get one GIF free! :D
April 21, 20223 yr This sketch video was legitimately the most useful summary of an NFT I've seen: TcmpqeIcbAw Genuinely question people who endorse this, let's get ready to mock them with their low position when it comes x
April 21, 20223 yr Genuinely question people who endorse this, let's get ready to mock them with their low position when it comes x It’s being released on all the usual formats too, I imagine it’ll go at least Top 10 like their previous albums.
April 21, 20223 yr That sketch is excellent and confirmed my existing position that NFTs, blockchain, cryptocurrency etc are all shit 😅 Edited April 21, 20223 yr by rio309
