June 14, 20223 yr I hate to be negative about music but I really don't get that Cat Burns song, no desire to even get through the song once. The goddard. remix is good.. the original is kinda dull Edited June 14, 20223 yr by ElectroBoy
June 14, 20223 yr Thanks for the link, very interesting read. So according to the article, the rules have not been changed but they rather made an exception with Kate The surge in affection for Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill looks likely to send her to number one this week. The 80s ballad is already at number two, thanks to its use in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Its chances of making the top have now increased, after the Official Charts exempted it from a rule that penalises older songs when they are streamed. Running Up That Hill is currently the UK's most-streamed song, averaging 700,000 plays per day on Spotify. In previous weeks, those streams would have counted as 3,500 "sales". This week, that figure will double to 7,000. That's all because of an esoteric, but important, rule dictating the way the charts are calculated in the streaming era. Im happy as it means a song i love will now go to number 1 but overall its a bit unfair to other artists who may have previously lost out due to the same, it should be one rule for all to keep it fair and in a way it shows just how messed up the charts are nowadays.
June 14, 20223 yr I'm more shocked the BBC article calls RUTH an 80s Ballad It's hardly "The Power of Love" or "Saving All My Love for You".
June 14, 20223 yr It goes to show how poorly thought through the 3-year rule is - like Chez said a few pages back, the main thing it was brought in for was to stop Christmas songs taking over and that hasn't worked. I can maybe understand them not wanting the likes of Mr Blue Sky to get a reset every time there's good weather, otherwise it seems the rule is pointless, and handing out manual resets or not based on who shouts loudest (which has been happening for years with old songs which take off on TikTok) is taking the control away from the public who the chart is purported to represent.
June 14, 20223 yr It suret gives a bad precedent, I mean, anyone can apply now and the occ cannot really say no
June 14, 20223 yr The next acid test will be all the football songs this November / December. The OCC will have to be consistent not only to Three Lions, Vindaloo and World in Motion, but to all of them older than 3 years.
June 14, 20223 yr Yup! ACR has to go. It has just msde thr charts male-artist love-ins, and all borne out of the sexist hatrrd thst thr OCC has for Marish :( They have shown no such hatred toeards Wham, and actively pushed for thag to become the biggest Xmas Easter song!!
June 14, 20223 yr It suret gives a bad precedent, I mean, anyone can apply now and the occ cannot really say no Vert true as any artist/label can now argue it was given to Kate Bush
June 14, 20223 yr I think they should just say that any song on permanent ACR that would reach a new peak without it is automatically reset- even Christmas songs as ACR doesn't stop them clogging up the chart every year anyway. Songs like Don't Blame me by Taylor Swift being on permanent ACR at the moment despite never having charted previously is equally ridiculous to Kate being blocked from number 1. June 14, 20223 yr ACR and the 3 year rule aren’t ‘fair’ almost by definition, their sole purpose is to attempt to stop the same songs constantly charting either week after week or year after year. Kate’s song doesn’t fit into either of those principles so I can see why they would reset it on this occasion, it would be a bigger injustice to have both the most purchased and most streamed song never reach #1. I guess whether you are happy about it depends upon whether you’re a rigid strict rules kinda person or a more loose in the spirit of the idea kinda person. I’m definitely the latter but I can see why charts would attract lots of the former!
June 14, 20223 yr The ACR rule actually making its way into mainstream media feels like a bit of a fever dream xx
June 14, 20223 yr Well it's ironic that a vital chart rule is starting to get talked about everywhere apart from the actual Official Chart show on R1 where it is like Voldermort and must never been mentioned!
June 14, 20223 yr WOE!!! ADELE JUST FELL 1 TO 8, WHAT A TWIST, WHAT A FALL!! ACR is utter bullshit, and the fact they don't ever mention it shoes hoe embarrassed they are of it, and allto keep Mariah "in line". Twats.
June 14, 20223 yr Well it's ironic that a vital chart rule is starting to get talked about everywhere apart from the actual Official Chart show on R1 where it is like Voldermort and must never been mentioned! Considering it took a whole article for the BBC to explain it, I can see why Scott doesn't think it's necessary to mention it on drivetime national radio!

Oh yeah, when they introduced this rule in mid-2017 it was all one giant conspiracy against Mariah Carey.
June 14, 20223 yr at least they are being more transparent about their rules now. its not that easy to find out about it if you're not an avid chart follower tbh
June 14, 20223 yr The Offical Charts are a disgrace, just makig it up as they go along. They have ruined the charts with their pathetic bogus rules. They owe Mariah.
June 14, 20223 yr Not people still being salty about Mariah despite the fact she did, you know, get to #1 in the end anyway
