May 28, 20232 yr Author Luton Town goalscorer Jordan Clark said boss Rob Edwards had told them to win the Championship play-off final for Tom Lockyer after the defender collapsed in the opening stages of the match. The Hatters captain, 28, was taken straight to hospital, where he was pictured celebrating in his bed after his team-mates won a penalty shootout. Clark told Sky Sports: "The gaffer said we had to do it for him." Edwards said it "felt a little bit wrong to celebrate". Luton were a non-league team just nine years ago, and their victory over Coventry took them back into the top division for the first time since 1992. But the day had begun in worrying fashion as they lost Lockyer in just the eighth minute - the Wales international falling to the turf and having to be taken off on a stretcher.

May 28, 20232 yr Author Coventry City boss Mark Robins is looking to the Sky Blues' cruel Wembley Championship play-off final defeat on penalties by Luton Town to "act as fuel" for next season. Saturday's game was only the fourth Championship play-off final to be settled on penalties since it moved to Wembley in 1990. "There is some pain," he told BBC CWR. "But we just have to take our medicine. "It is a bit raw but they now know how it feels to lose a final like that." Only three of the previous nine losers of a Championship play-off final have since made it the Premier League, but all three won promotion in the season after losing at Wembley; Middlesbrough in 2016, Aston Villa in 2019 and Brentford in 2021.
May 28, 20232 yr It will be interesting to see how Luton do next season, on paper they wouldn't have much of a chance of staying up but they could cause some surprises. It's not often that all 3 of next season's promoted teams have been decided before the current Premier League season ends, it's normally the play off winners that take the final spot out of the 20 teams in the following season's Premier League.
May 28, 20232 yr Author They'd have to invest on recruitment if they want to survive in the Premier League it would be a tough ask for them to stay up without spending any money. I just hope they aren't a one-season Premier League club a la Blackpool.
May 29, 20232 yr They’ll need to get their stadium up to scratch as well. It’ll be tough but the achievement of reaching the premier league alone is a great one. No doubt players like Theo Walcott will appear in some of the squads as they jump ship at the relegated clubs.
