Looks like Hunt is no more. Not that sympathetic considering he did a deal with the devil (Esther McVey) and he culled the Health Service.

Ironically that still leaves a bunch of politically-inclined Jeremy Hunts in the race... :teresa:

Evil man and destroyer of the NHS. Pocket politician and the dodgy dealer the Tories wheel out to do their dirty work. Thank you, NEXT!

Sunak will still win, unfortunately, but Penny would be the better choice ... for us. Get a Jeremy type leader and people won't make the same mistake as in 2017. He will win vs Penny.

Hunt and Zahawi are out as Sunak tops ballot and six candidates go through to round two

Sir Graham Brady, chair of the Conservative 1922 Committee, is announcing the results of the first ballot. He reads them out in alphabetical order.

Rishi Sunak - 88

Penny Mordaunt - 67

Liz Truss - 50

Kemi Badenoch - 40

Tom Tugendhat - 37

Suella Braverman - 32

Nadhim Zahawi - 25

Jeremy Hunt - 18

He says that means Hunt and Zahawi are out of the contest. The others will go ahead to the second ballot tomorrow.

Penny Mordaunt now the bookies favourite.

I reckon Truss could do a lot of deals to ensure Mordaunt isn't in the final two as THAT WOULD BE A DISGRACE for her!
This contest reminds me a bit of the contest that Theresa May won, like May, Mordaunt is middle ground for a Tory, relatively uncontroversial, distant enough from the previous government, seen as a unifying force and thats how I think she will win it. Mordaunt is the Theresa May candidate!

If Mordaunt's promotional video is any indication of how she'll be as PM, I'm a little scared :teresa:

I need Braverman and Badernoch out of this asap.

Have just been reminded that Penny Mordaunt was a contestant on the second series of that Tom Daley 'Splash!' reality show. Also confirming the existence of that show wasn't some weird fever dream.

I'm not too sure what to make of her U-turning on trans issues. Is it better that we have a prime minister who (seemingly) only pretends to be transphobic for clout among the right wing than one who is actually transphobic? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's very sad that that seems to be such a pivotal issue when it come to the Tory leadership.

Really just praying that Braverman and Badenoch stay well away from the top 2 because they seem to be real demons even by Tory standards

They're talking about a lot of Bravermans voters potentially going to Truss on Sky News there but I disagree, most of Bravermans supporters will vote Badenoch I think as they are very similar 'culture-war' candidates.

Truss is also too much of a Boris fan. - there are 3 camps in the Tories, left wing, right wing and Boris loyalists. The right wing and Boris loyalists are not necessarily the same thing.

So Truss could miss out on a top 3 place to Badenoch I think.

My favourite poll of the contest, in the Standard, shows that 5% of voters say the know "a great deal" about Braverman, Badenoch and Tugendhat. That compares with 6% who say they know a great deal about Tory MP Stewart Lewis. Who doesn't exist.
Sunak v Morduant final two with Penny the winner. Be afraid Starmer. She'll beat you in the election as she'll hold those Red Wall seats.
Truss seems the biggest snake to me, a remainer in a Johnson cabinet and also a former Lib Dem, seems to just want to be in power and specifically be PM!

Word on the ground is that Truss is the preferred candidate of the right wing press (more direct influence with her) and that because Mordaunt (who is arguably more independent and still seen to be a bit "woke" however much she tries to shake off that tag) is likely to win against whoever she faces, they are routing for the final two to be Truss and Sunak with Sunak to lose. And so, there could well be co-ordination to give Braverman and Badenoch's votes (when they both eventually lose) to Truss.

Yes I look at the newspaper front pages on BBC News's 'The Papers' and I knew the Daily Mail was supporting Truss just by looking at some of the recent headlines.
