July 26, 20222 yr I associate Little Simz with last year, I forgot about this weird time period it takes place in! That would be my pick from the very few I've listened to here, guessing Wet Leg will be a hot favourite. Also, I did not know Jessie Buckley did music x Love Jessie Buckley. She was famous with music first (coming 2nd on Id Do Anything & then appearing as a singer in Wild Rose). Do love her voice.
July 26, 20222 yr I would have liked Nilufer Yanya Agreed, although I own the Little Simz album on vinyl and its a total classic so hopefully she wins after missing out in 2019.
July 26, 20222 yr @1551895330370854916 I was, on the other hand, a little disappointed that Screen Violence and Ants From Up There missed out, but this does look like a promising shortlist. Especially looking forward to checking out Gwenno and Kojey Radical (the former's Le Kov album was fantastic) Kojey album is fantastic. Happy to see a fair few of the albums I wanted got nominated especially Joy Crookes who deserves so much more recognition than she gets. If she was Adele she would be huge!! Especially now I read she was half Irish ❤️ With regards to the Harry album they normally nominate a more pop album each year now and he thoroughly deserves it.
July 26, 20222 yr Joy Crookes or Self Esteem to win it! I would say Wet Leg, but they're doing well enough right now and those two deserve a boost!
July 26, 20222 yr This year's inexplicable snub goes to Black Country, New Road, I thought they'd have a decent shot at winning. There are quite a few mentioned in the OP that I'd have preferred to see over what actually made it (BC,NR, CHVRCHES, Fontaines, Florence, Nilüfer, Kelly Lee Owens, Let's Eat Grandma, Knucks, Kae Tempest...) Only listened to 4 of the albums on the shortlist, out of those I am definitely rooting for Little Simz but would be happy with Self Esteem too. Wet Leg's album was ok but definitely not worthy of winning this. Harry's I only really cared for about 4 or 5 songs from, a fairly big step down in quality from his last album imo. All of the rest I've liked a song or two at most and not cared enough to hear them in full. Never heard of Fergus unsurprisingly, Joy Crookes is the only other one that I don't have at least one song saved from (heard a few songs from her and they've done nothing for me).
July 27, 20222 yr Wet Leg’s album is my least favourite type of indie, it’s totally uninspiring to me. Let’s Eat Grandma is the worst omission for me, joyous whilst also being very poignant. Deserved the recognition.
July 27, 20222 yr well i'm happy for Fergus, he deserves the exposure... but this is the second year in a row they've refused to crown BCNR as the rightful winners, it has become increasingly clear the panel are more interested in spiting me than rewarding the best record (putting aside the factor they weren't gonna perform any songs from Ants without Isaac) (so it's possible they just didn't enter at all, but if they're not gonna be transparent with that info then imma continue dragging them x) btw Little Simz is probably winning this, yet Ladbrokes offered me 7/1 for some reason? guess I'm getting that bag then
July 28, 20222 yr This is certainly the least I've ever cared for a Mercury Prize list. Self Esteem and Little Simz albums are both amazing, other than that there's nothing I'd be bothered about listening to, maybe Joy Crookes at a push @1551876998775148544  Edited July 28, 20222 yr by RabbitFurCoat
August 23, 20222 yr Wet Leg, Little Simz and Self Esteem are the bookies favourites to win, I’ve placed a bet on Sam Fender at 20/1 - I think one of the favourites will get it but couldn’t miss up those odds as the Mercury Music Prize has thrown up some random/unexpected results in the past.
August 24, 20222 yr I mean there's only 12 names on the list and it doesn't look like it would be hard to whittle it down to the one that looks like it might be a female album in Cornish :kink:
August 27, 20222 yr Hoping it goes to Yard Act but fully expecting it to be either Wet Leg or Little Simz.
August 27, 20222 yr I'm fully behind and rooting for Little Simz to win this- I feel like this is definitely her time and she's worked so hard for it, I particularly feel like this as I felt like she was rudely robbed in 2019 for what I thought at the time was a really interesting and engaging rap/hip-hop album with wall-to-wall bangers. However SIMBI is even more accomplished, in both terms of her voice and the rich production (which is from her childhood friend Inflo and includes some very lush strings which is like my ultimate weakness), I loved it and the themes of trying to overcome her flaws and tendency to introversion kinda chimed with me (with the ultimate being the '..But then you never PICK UP THE PHONE' at the end of “Woman” !) and it grew on me to become such a huge favourite that it is the only one of these 12 that I bought on vinyl. I do feel like Self Esteem could justifiably be deserving also, however despite having some killer singles, the album wasn't as consistent for me so just misses the level that would make it award winning. Black Country, New Road should have won it last year, even though I preferred the single version of “Sunglasses” to the album version, so they almost had a perfect album...
September 9, 20222 yr Hopefully they manage to reschedule it as it was supposed to be broadcast, but I reckon they might just announce it on The One Show or something like 2020.
September 24, 20222 yr The rescheduled results ceremony will now take place on Tuesday 18th October. @1573224281764667393 Edited September 24, 20222 yr by ManicKangaroo
