Biography

Few artists have impacted 21st century rap like Nicki Minaj. Born Onika Tanya Maraj in Trinidad and Tobago in 1982 but raised mostly in Queens, Minaj attended Manhattan’s prestigious LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (the inspiration for the movie Fame) before trying to make it as an actor— a past evidenced by the deep performative streak that runs through her music today. Turning to rap in her twenties, Minaj quickly became one of the brightest stars in Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money universe. Her work—shapeshifting, ferocious, cartoonish, and often filled with oddball voices and alter egos—is as capable of breaking hearts (“Super Bass”) as it is detaching heads (her breakout verse on Kanye West’s 2010 “Monster,” in which she arguably outshined both West and fellow guest Jay-Z). Minaj’s electrifying presence has also made her a secret weapon in the pop world, where she's just as likely to share credits with David Guetta and Justin Bieber as Ludacris and Future. On top of her own success, Minaj helped rap—and rap audiences—look past narratives of gritty realism for something fluid and playful, but no less genuine or powerful. Railing against the double standard faced by women in entertainment, the outspoken Minaj once told MTV, “You have to be a beast. That’s the only way they respect you.” - Apple Music

Sunroof at #41.

I'm crying a river. :( :(

Didn't realise it was close to top 40 again. Maybe next week if it's a dead release week.
I hope so, much prefer it to Bad Habit (whatever it is those songs have in common).
Ah, finally All These Nights debuts.
hopefully in two weeks we will be celebrating Demetria devonne getting another number two xx
Beyoncé can't beat the system *.*

But Beyonce's will 100% be more remembered in 5+ years time.

One thing BuzzJack is going to do is fawn over boring minimilaatic dance songs and claim them as revolutionary and exciting lmao.

Good to have a healthy number of top 40 new entries this week (and without having to rely on album bombs for it), although I haven't heard most of them yet (as per) and don't have particularly high hopes that many of them will be any good :kink: Eliza Rose is the only one I have already heard and I do like it if not as much as some others do, it is growing on me though and pleased to see it currently holding Sigala at bay from the top 10. It's affirming that this and LF SYSTEM are proving to be seemingly the biggest dance hits of the year showing some appetite from the public for moving onto some slightly more interesting dance music than the usual Corry et al. (I say this and now watch 'HISTORY' go on to be an even bigger hit lol).

KSI really building a Sash!-esque discography with this now being his 6th song to reach #4 or higher without a #1 to his name yet, surely only a matter of time until he finally gets a chart topper though. Glad to see the new peaks for 'Stay With Me', 'Bad Habit' and 'Ferrari', hope all 3 can still contend for future top 10 peaks (I think James Hype probably will but less sure about the others, Steve slowing down a bit like Joji did isn't the best sign, at least those were both top 10s in the US I guess). And speaking of Joji pleased to see he did get a proper chart show play today despite dropping again and being removed from the R1 playlist - I guess he's probably off to ACR next week? So a nice sendoff if so.

Headie One's erratic chart peaks continue with this one doing a lot better than all his other singles from the last 2 years for whatever reason and even in the process giving a new highest position to date for both Abra Cadabra and Bandokay! Lol at Chris Brown just easing to a top 40 peak with a song off his last album after nothing from the new album got there. 'Under The Influence' apparently wasn't even considered good enough by Chris to include on the original 33(!) track version of the 'Indigo' album, it was one of the extra 10 tracks added to the deluxe edition  (imagine listening to 43 straight Chris Brown tracks, ew).

Diplo and Miguel really being the guardians of the #40 spot :cheeseblock:

If Beyoncé stays at #1 on albums, RENAISSANCE will be only the 6th album this decade to get a second week at #1 straight after its first - the other 5 were:

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

Lady Gaga - Chromatic

Taylor Swift - folklore

Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR

Adele - 30

Interesting to note that this is an entirely female list despite #1 albums in general being fairly male dominated most of the time! (of course Ed and Harry both had consecutive weeks at #1 with their most recent albums as well but not on their initial runs at the top). Taylor also had multiple weeks at #1 with 'evermore' although not consecutively, but there are a few other male albums that had multiple 1 week runs in the decade as well (Lewis Capaldi, Dave, Drake) so it's a slightly more even split looking at albums with more than one total week at #1.

I hope so, much prefer it to Bad Habit (whatever it is those songs have in common).

Not sure if you meant to imply that they do have anything in common but they did both enter the top 10 in the US last week.

I don't think anyone said it was revolutionary lol. Yeah it isn't anything new as this sort of thing has been done way back when but in comparison to the typical dance that fills the chart all the time it makes for some diversity.

Edited by Roba.

@Bre - I wondered if someone would pick up on that :D yes, those albums which stayed at #1 straight after their first week are now 6/6 from female solo artists. I imagine that run will be broken later this year by the new Lewis Capaldi album if nothing else, but of course that could depend on what's released the following week.

As for Sunroof and Bad Habit, I had no idea they'd reached the US top 10 last week, I just associate them together as I guess they sound of a similar 'lo-fi' aesthetic and blew up on Tik Tok at a similar time, but that may be a bit tenuous - well, there's hope that Sunroof can now at least make the Top 40 here in light of its success in the US.

Some people have made it out that way, I just prefer songs with melody and personality but each to their own. Afraid To Feel and BOTA will be forgotten in the same way a lot of dance #1's are anyway - Prayer In C, Waves, Need U (100%) which were all massive at the time but are barely played now.

Who has made it out that way? Are you implying that BOTA doesn't have melody or personality!?

And if that is his implication, so what? Is he not as entitled to an opinion as anyone else?
