I don't think Mark back then could handle that well, he was very insecure about a lot of things, even his singing. So its better Shane was a frontman, he has a rare ability to sound exactly the same live as on the record, I never heard him miss a note.

 

Agreed. Shane was always the stand out vocalist to me. Good range, lovely tone and such an accurate, reliable singer.

I had to listen to a lot of the songs from 2006 onwards as I'd never heard them but I wanted to give them a score rather than an XX. They did have some great songs in that early run.

I definitely agree with you that Mark is a more exciting singer, I really like his improvisations now. But Mark back then would have hated the role of a leading man, being constantly in the center, needing to always talk in intervews, starting the songs etc. He was so worried about his weight as well and Simon/Louis often calling him fat didn't help at all. He was depressed a lot in the early days and having suicidal thoughts when he was thinking he can't be openly gay. So just from that point of view it is better he isn't a leading singer.

I feel like Westlife actually got their vocalist placings correct. Mark may be the best technical singer, but Shane's def sounds more of a "lead man". Also, having Mark not be the lead man means that his big parts in songs hit as hard as they're supposed to, imo. Whereas, had he been the lead man and had more of the lead verses I don't think his original parts would have hit as much with someone else singing them.

Edited in the remaining of my rate now. Two things, firstly to the swing stuff - NO and second, the newer material - very good. 'Hello My Love' and 'Starlight especially are extremely solid and trounce a lot of their older songs. 8 being the closest to an 11 for them here as nothing is an 9-11 for me purely cause i'm not a fan of them generally. Those two along with 'World Of Our Own' and 'Us Against The World' are my faves by them clearly.
