Free As A Bird The Beatles (Voters: Julian T- 19pts, Popchartfreak- 27 pts, Jade- 9pts)

(#2 for 1 week in December 1995 behind “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson)

Another song that was touted as a chart topper (and a potential festive chart topper at that) but fell short of putting the boys ahead of Elvis as the act with the most No 1’s in chart history.

Doh! I lost The Beatles as a biggie, but it did well really! yay Jade & Julian! :cheer:

It only peaked at 2, I think, because EMI insisted on releasing the single AFTER the Anthology album had maximised sales from airplay for the single. Normal 90's practice would be to go for a high new entry week 1 and then plug the album. I'm convinced that cost single sales, boo!

Unpopular opinion but I prefer 'Vindaloo' to 'Three Lions' :kink: didn't vote for it though. Relieved I've not lost anything else since Bon Jovi was out.

I think Richard III was actually one of the last songs I had to junk from my votes and i'm surprised it got this far tbh as I didn't think it was that well remembered, I wasn't aware of it until a couple of years ago but it sounds fantastic and would have made a great if forgotten #1.

Vindaloo is simply iconic. :cheeseblock:

Free As A Bird is nice but i'm not that fussed about it, I wouldn't call it a Beatles classic. It would have been nice if they had got the #1 though, especially against friggin Earth Song.

Just looked over my votes and I think my 9 pointer is most likely to be something that only I voted for, but we'll see.

...so that one in question was 'Free As A Bird'! I knew The Beatles had big fans on here but wasn't sure how the 90s singles fared. Glad John and Julian (not Lennon!!) appreciate it too
