November 26, 20222 yr I’m dead chuffed the top 5 is 3 Britpop classics plus 2 great dance tunes - sums up my 90s taste quite nicely :D
November 26, 20222 yr I'm shocked at all of these classics never hitting #1 in UK charts :o especially 'Children' and 'Wonderwall'
November 26, 20222 yr I'm shocked at all of these classics never hitting #1 in UK charts :o especially 'Children' and 'Wonderwall' The number 2s of the 90s were generally way more iconic than the number 1s.
November 26, 20222 yr Yeh the record companies learnt how to dominate the top spot with crap by the 90s hence the no2 were unreal!
November 27, 20222 yr Aw at 'Children' missing top 5, that's the last of my top 20 pointers out now. First time I was aware of the track was performing some P.E. piece too it in first school lol. It's an wondrous dance classic. Down to 8 points remaining now oop and low points at that but a silver lining is two I voted have made top 5. One is to expected and the other well not really :P
November 27, 20222 yr especially 95-97 had amazing britpop (Oasis, Pulp, Blur, Manics, Verve etc) and amazing dance tracks (Born Slippy, Children) so the top 6 in this poll is (almost) perfect :)
November 27, 20222 yr Author Y'all been demanding it for AGES so here it is! NO 5- 391 POINTS Better Off Alone DJ Jurgon Ft Alice Deejay (Voters: Waspbre- 17pts, Daan- 27pts, Dot Mirrorball- 17pts, Jimwatts- 19pts, Riser- 21pts, Chez Wombat- 11pts, Colm- 7pts, Julian T- 22pts, Gooddelta- 29pts, Roba!- 1pt, West- 15pts, Bjork- 24pts, Jason- 24pts, Torple- 15pts, Gezza- 29pts, Mack- 21pts, Narcow-17pts, AH Gold- 30pts, Chartjack2- 14pts, Coi- 12pts, Jade- 16pts, Jester- 3pts) Only AH Gold gave this one 30 points but a wholesome 22 voters out of 31 gave this dance track some points as it gets the accolade of Buzzjack’s favourite No 2 of 1999. o1NJ--qvsiM
November 27, 20222 yr Very impressive finish for 'Better Off Alone'! When I went to the aforementioned We Love The 90s gig I think it got the most enthusiastic reaction from the crowd out of anything. 'Born Slippy' the highest dance song then *.* chuffed with that.
November 27, 20222 yr Thank the lord! I looked back and I ranked it 68th so it was nowhere near points from me. I did buy it and I would listen to it now so it’s not a song I dislike, it’s just that I find it really basic in retrospect.
November 27, 20222 yr That's a lot of love for Alice Deejay - even if I'd given them 0 points and Robert Miles 30, they still would have been top 5! Although I think Childen is the better record, I like them for much the same reasons - it takes you through all the layers beneath what seems a basic tune on the surface - and that's why Better Off Alone has stuck with me more than any other 1999 trance song.
November 27, 20222 yr I don't consider it a trance song, it's so removed from the trance formula. I'd associate with something a little more twee like The Vengaboys or Urban Cookie Collective. Edited November 27, 20222 yr by Colm
November 27, 20222 yr yes, zero trance Better Off Alone has a great pop melody, for instance, it's a great song to sing and play on guitar I kinda forced my bad to learn how to play and at first they were all wtf (cos they all like Bon Iver and Phoebe Bridgers and Damien Rice) but they all ended up loving Better off Alone :D
November 27, 20222 yr It’s a great track and in my top five of all-time. An iconic No.2 for that fact that it’s one of those that nearly went all the way and got blocked by different (inferior) records on each attempt. And with that…I’m out! Four very solid records left but Common People and A Design For Life over the other two for me any day. Edited November 27, 20222 yr by gooddelta
November 27, 20222 yr ^ at least you managed to get your last (and massive one at that) pointer in the top 5! I only gave it a point  but wouldn't have made no difference. A classic dance track for sure and done better than could have really, then again I did think it could perform extremely well tbh as it is a cult dance smash for people. I've got one more pointer remaining now. Kinda hoping it isn't 4th so that I make top 3 with it :kink:
November 27, 20222 yr Going by how unpredictable this has gone here is my prediction 4 Common People 3 A Design for Life 2 Born Slippy 1 Bittersweet Symphony
November 27, 20222 yr I just played it again after not hearing it for some time and it all came flooding back to me. I didn't chart it at all, according to my A to Z of 1997 to 2021. So to make sure I didnt make a mistake I checked my charts of July and August 1999. I didn't! Prob a bit unfair actually in retrospect. I'm afraid it was the sheer repetitiveness of the bleepy instrumental bit and the one line repeated over and over that got on my nerves quite quickly  My top tracks for Aug 99 were Texas, Suede, Pet Shop Boys, Bran Van 3000, James, Mercury Rev, Groove Armada, Elvis Costello, TLC so I clearly wasn't into dance that month (except Planet Perfecto, J-LO, Destiny's Child, Fatboy Slim, Phats & Small, Shaft, basement Jaxx) :D
November 27, 20222 yr With my votes Children would have been top five then. Born Slippy to win, then four other are common.
November 27, 20222 yr Two simple but very special dance tracks at 5 and 6. I gave them 21 and 22 and I’ve only given more to one of the Top 4. I’m thinking it could be a Common People / Born Slippy showdown but might be utterly wrong.
