OMG I had no idea that Life sold enough to have been a spiritual #1 single!

Des Ree robbed of number one

All her hopes and dreams were gone

But she had a fruity scone

And ate away that pain

I can very much stand I Can’t Stand It - in fact I would happily go back to it again and again. Great tune!

Life is iconic, but I wouldn’t recommend flying round the world in a balloon, however beautiful.

This may be your single most amazing post.

	               Wk 1 Wk 5 Wk 10
Life 8	15	14	16	16	21	22	21	26	30	34	41	61	63	72
Bootie Call 1	7	15	24	34	46	60	57	63	71	71
Turn Back Time 1	3	7	14	20	27	37	43	62	68
All That I Need 1	4	14	22	31	44	55	49	60	67	69

Even though they were all released at different times, a rough comparison says that it was the slow decent that bagged her the larger sales. By the 5th week she was higher than any of the comparative number 1s and remained so, to be on average 39 places higher than them by week 10.

58 - Janet Jackson - Again

66th best seller of 1993

Chart Run

12-6-8-10-16-15-17-12-33-51-57

Third single from parent album, Janet, this gorgeous ballad hit number 1 in the USA. Like her brother, Michael, she liked to release a lot of singles - there were up to 10 singles taken from Janet in various territories.

This didn't outsell any number 1s from 1993.

57 - MC Sar & The Real McCoy - Run Away

66th best seller of 1995

Chart Run

11-6-7-7-11-12-20-26-41-68

Follow up to the massive Another Night, this was their 8th single over all. The first being a cover of Technotronic's Pump up the Jam - I guess cover versions of dance songs has always been a thing but it kinda seems strange to cover a massive song like that.

This didn't outsell any number 1s from 1995.

56 - Eternal - I Am Blessed

65th best seller of 1995

Chart Run

14-12-13-10-8-7-11-22-30-34-47-61

Single sales were so strong in December 1995 (Earthsong, Missing, Wonderwall, Gangsta's Paradise) that I Am Blessed managed to be the 65th best selling single of the year with just a four week chart run of 14-12-13-10.

The 9 songs above it while it was number 10 all placed in the top 50 of the year.

This didn't outsell any number 1s from 1995.

I really like Run Away, although probably not as much as Another Night.

Very interesting '(mostly) slow and steady climb' sort of chart run for Eternal there, really sounds like a lost Whitney single.

really sounds like a lost Whitney single.

It really does.

Run Away is good, Again is fabulous, sensitive and tasteful and a popchartfreak chart-topper.

I Am Blessed that I havent heard that Eternal song since 1995. Comparisons to Whitney Houston do not invite me to youtube, as she at least could shriek in tune. In the interests of fairness, though, I'm playing it now. The fake "I-IIIII" is Whitney, the rest is fairly low-key for Eternal. I managed 2 and a half minutes before I had to turn it off as I was falling into a coma with boredom and I need to be alert for work tomorrow :teresa:

55 - Duran Duran - Ordinary World

64th best seller of 1993

Chart Run

11-6-6-9-12-20-33-43-63

From by far my favourite period for Duran Duran, this is great. The verse is much better than the chorus, though.

Overall, I prefer Come Undone.

54 - Shampoo - Trouble

64th best seller of 1994

Chart Run

14-14-12-13-11-12-17-21-29-34-47-67

Here's the second and final non-top 10 single in this run down. Such tenacity was rewarded with the 64th best seller of the year.

It didn't outsell any of the number 1 singles of 1994.

I adore Ordinary World, definitely my favourite Duran Duran song.

Trouble just makes me think of St Trinian's  had no idea it was a pretty big seller.

Ordinary World is brilliant, I bought it, and also the even-more brilliant Come Undone. Can I take the credit for it selling-well? :D

I didn't buy Trouble. My 11-year-old niece liked Shampoo though (she'll be 40 next year, I should probably remind her on her card just in case she's forgotten) :teresa:

Quite a few more there that I bought... Ordinary World, Trouble, Again and Run Away all found a spot in my singles collection as a teenager. I still think they're all pretty decent from their respective genres, even Trouble is kinda good fun.

53 - Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen - Theme From Mission: Impossible

64th best seller of 1996

Chart Run

7-13-20-27-21-16-15-18-26-39-51-68

A fairly tame effort when you compare it to other re-booted themes during the mid-to late 90s like Apollo 440's Lost in Space and Orbital's The Saint, to name but two.

This outsold Peter Andre's I Feel You which was a 1 week number 1 later that year.
