September 3, 20222 yr I initially had Jade for Damaris for some reason but Judith does make sense tbh.
September 3, 20222 yr I did think Judith Durham was likely to be Jade unless Suedehead or Popchartfreak had entered.
September 3, 20222 yr Author Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) - Ansel Ansel sent this Soul-disco sounding hybrid which is impressively obscure as I can't find a lot of facts about it or them. It would certainly fit right at home on a 70s disco compilation album for sure x Hi! Here are my PFSC votes ^_^ 12 Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love 10 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 08 Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 07 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 06 Exposé - Point of No Return 05 Robyn feat. O.C. & Rahzel - Show Me Love (QD3 Fat Boy Remix) 04 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime 03 K-Otic - I Surrender 02 Killer - Liar 01 Damaris - Tusuykusun 16 Exposé - Point of No Return 15 Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love 14 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 12 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 11 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime 10 Killer - Liar 08 Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 07 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 07 Damaris - Tusuykusun 05 Clout - Save Me 05 Robyn feat. O.C. & Rahzel - Show Me Love (QD3 Fat Boy Remix) 03 K-Otic - I Surrender 02 The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend 01 Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control Expose and Mariya benefit from further points to take the lead at this early stage, several songs overlooked in the last set of votes enter so we have just under half on the scoreboard. Our next set of votes are from 1979 where we visit the movies again only to find in space, no one can hear you scream...
September 3, 20222 yr Ah there's the sample that was used in 'Head Over Heels' by Blu Lipstick song. Knew it sounded familiar somehow. Edited September 3, 20222 yr by Roba!
September 3, 20222 yr I have no idea how well my entry will do or what might win. I have a feeling the song I gave 12 points to might do well, but might be setting myself up for disappointment there.
September 3, 20222 yr Author Clout - Save Me - kth To the shock of everyone, Kath sends the one South African artist in the contest. An all female group formed in Johannesburg. They are best known in the UK for their #2 hit Substitute, but their cover of the popular country-pop song Save Me charted in many places too. It's very Fleetwood Mac-esque and really cool, not quite Soap Girls but almost there x :hi: 12 - Exposé - Point of No Return 10 - Judith Durham - The Olive Tree 08 - Robyn feat. O.C. & Rahzel - Show Me Love (QD3 Fat Boy Remix) 07 - Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 06 - Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 05 - Daryl Hall - Dreamtime 04 - Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life 03 - Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 02 - Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 01 - Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) 28 Exposé - Point of No Return 21 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 16 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime 15 Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love 14 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 13 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 13 Robyn feat. O.C. & Rahzel - Show Me Love (QD3 Fat Boy Remix) 11 Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 10 Killer - Liar 10 Judith Durham - The Olive Tree (Jade) 07 Damaris - Tusuykusun 05 Clout - Save Me (kth) 04 Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life 03 K-Otic - I Surrender 02 The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend 01 Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control 01 Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) (Ansel) We do see something of a contender emerge as Exposé get a 12 to form a decent lead, as well as Jane Child on their heels, Kath (whose emoji in the name didn't copy over, I'll keep it in as it's iconic) also ensures the fellow revealees so far are both on the scoreboard with them, Up next, we go to 1984 where we visit a book released 36 years prior that happened to have the same name, as there wasn't a lot of cultural happenings in this year x
September 3, 20222 yr :hi: I sent Clout because they're an iconic South African girl band and Save Me is very embedded in culture here and is played very often on radio and at bars and clubs to this day. I was shocked to see that it never dented the UK charts after their breakthrough with Substitute. Hopefully people didn't vote based on the wrong (and shoddy) version that was used in the Spotify playlist initially x Ty Jade for the 5
September 3, 20222 yr Clout *.* great pick Kath. I do admit it did sound like something I've heard before tbh but 'Substitute' is their most recognisable to me.
September 3, 20222 yr A couple of my faves unveiled already - the Judith Durham song was really lovely (I was being careful to make sure I was judging it solely on the song and not giving it a sympathy bonus but I do genuinely think it'd be ranked highly for me regardless, I see it was one Jade has been a fan of for many years before her death) and also really enjoyed the Clout song, serving South African Fleetwood Mac. I just listened to 'Rumours' not too long ago and this song wouldn't have sounded far out of place on it. Truly a shock that Kath was behind the South African entry :o Nice idea to reveal from oldest to newest, gives me an idea of when to expect my votes to appear :kink:
September 3, 20222 yr Author Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love - Izzy It was Iz who sent the Japanese City Pop hit that was a moderate success at the time, but in 2017, an eight minute remix was uploaded that took a hold of the YouTube algorithm that currently has over 63 million views and was probably many Westerners first exposure to city pop. A curious oddity indeed, Iz opts for the original though, how well will it do for him? 12 Little by Little - Kanashimi wo Yasashisa ni 10 Perfume - Electro World 08 PIPO ANGELS - Merry Go Round 07 Aqua - Back To The 80’s 06 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 05 Lenka - Trouble is a Friend 04 Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 03 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 02 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 01 Judith Durham - The Olive Tree 28 Exposé - Point of No Return 27 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 17 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 16 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime 15 Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love (Izzy) 15 Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 15 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 13 Robyn feat. O.C. & Rahzel - Show Me Love (QD3 Fat Boy Remix) 12 Little by Little - Kanashimi wo Yasashisa ni 11 Judith Durham - The Olive Tree (Jade) 10 Killer - Liar 10 Perfume - Electro World 08 PIPO ANGELS - Merry Go Round 07 Damaris - Tusuykusun 07 Aqua - Back to the 80s 05 Clout - Save Me (kth) 05 Lenka - Trouble is a Friend 04 Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life 03 K-Otic - I Surrender 02 The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend 01 Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control 01 Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) (Ansel) To the surprise of everyone, Iz's top 3 are all Asian entries, it does ensure quite a few debuts to the scoreboard. Nothing to Exposé puts their lead in jeopardy as Jane Child catches up Staying in the 80s, we go to 1986 next where one of the most successful West End shows of all time first opened, in sleep, he sings to you...
September 3, 20222 yr Call me immature but some,of these symbols for each song don’t make sense to me, I might need subtitles. :P
September 3, 20222 yr Author Daryl Hall - Dreamland - King Rollo It wasn't Rollo who sent the oldest song this time, but still very much on brand with this prog and psychedelic-esque number from one half of the popular duo, Hall and Oates. This was his biggest hit as a solo performer, reaching top 5 in the US and top 30 over here. It's started out pretty well, let's see how it turns out. First place in my vote goes to the beautiful song The Olive Tree by Judith Durham. I never expected to see a Rolloland act entered into this contest but in 2nd place is Adrenaline by Emma Pollock who was one of The Delgados who I sent to BJSC107 with 'No Danger'. She didn't sing the lead vocal on that one. Overall this was a good contest, this is how I voted: 12pts - Judith Durham - The Olive Tree 10 - Emma Pollock - Adrenaline 8 - Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control 7 - Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) 6 - Killer - Liar 5 - Lenka - Trouble is a Friend 4 - Plumb - Real 3 - Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 2 - Aqua - Back To The 80’s 1 - K-Otic - I Surrender 28 Exposé - Point of No Return 27 Jane Child - Don't Wanna Fall in Love 23 Judith Durham - The Olive Tree (Jade) 18 Vanessa Paradis - Be My Baby 17 Ace Of Base - Happy Nation 16 Daryl Hall - Dreamtime (King Rollo) 16 Killer - Liar 15 Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love (Izzy) 15 Laura Branigan - Shattered Glass 13 Robyn feat. O.C. & Rahzel - Show Me Love (QD3 Fat Boy Remix) 12 Little by Little - Kanashimi wo Yasashisa ni 10 Perfume - Electro World 10 Emma Pollock - Adrenaline 10 Lenka - Trouble is a Friend 09 Aqua - Back to the 80s 09 Tilly And The Wall - Beat Control 08 Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP (Original 12" Mix) (Ansel) 08 PIPO ANGELS - Merry Go Round 07 Damaris - Tusuykusun 05 Clout - Save Me (kth) 04 Sister Sway - Until You Saved My Life 04 Plumb - Real 04 K-Otic - I Surrender 02 The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Around the Bend Not much is given to the contenders, but Rollo supports his fellow retro songs and Judith Durham gets the 12 to take her into 3rd at this early stage, just five songs still to appear on the scoreboard. Next up, staying in 1986, the debut of a certain animated family on the Tracey Ullman show...
September 3, 20222 yr Thanks Iz and Kath for the points - especially the latter for a silver medal *.* great to see that I voted for you both in return! I'm surprised that I never had a curiosity click listen of Iz's entry before, after it appeared so many times on my YouTube recommended. I'm glad it was forced on me here eventually
September 3, 20222 yr Author Call me immature but some,of these symbols for each song don’t make sense to me, I might need subtitles. :P It's a cultural event that happened in the year the song was released, they were all in the voting thread!
