I only dislike one of the songs you've added whereas I would have given high points to 3 of the 5 you removed so no, it's not an improvement, put it back :hitler:

(Surely we can't let Cheryl get away without an inclusion? Her last 2 #1s were both pretty widely hated and for good reason)

I approve of nearly all of those changes! Loca People is a good tune though.

Maybe Crazy Stupid Love would have been a better choice for the Cheryl song to include here?

OK well there’s 1 change that’s definitely happening which is Green Light off and Turn Up The Music on - everything else is still up for discussion.

I’d be on board with swapping the Cheryl songs round if there’s a consensus towards that.

I’m certainly not a Cheryl stan but are people saying we should have one of her songs on there regardless, rather than looking at them on their individual merit (or lack of merit) and weighing them up against other artists’ songs - because we should be doing the latter IMO.
I honestly think Dance Monkey >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Umbrella or I Will Always Love You

Dance Monkey better than Umbrella?

I... I just can't..... :o

Also that Cheryl song is awful and deserves to stay on the list and I think IDC is worse than CSL (not that that one is good either). I'd take Barry Islands back off to keep that in.

No grumbles at any of the other changes though.

Yeah, how did we sneak Cheryl off? :arrr: That or Crazy Stupid Love has to remain, they are definitely two of the worst of the decade.

Beautiful Girls is way worse than Baby's Coming Back as well (that's saved by the Transylvania double-a side *.)

'Dance Monkey' so marmite that the poll is 50/50

Would 100% be here for 'Crazy Stupid Love' as the Cheryl inclusion - the nadir of the horn trend that year

I really like Transylvania actually. Don't even remember it from the time tbh but discovered it a few years later and have liked it ever since. From memory Baby's Coming Back is quite shit but I haven't heard it enough to form a really strong opinion about it which again I guess is fitting for a #1-#20 single. I think I missed the listenthrough it was in as well lol.

Actually I’ve just re-listened to Baby’s Coming Back and it’s just very meh. I think we should avoid having too many songs that people just won’t have any real opinion about. I’m going to ditch that and reinstate Beautiful Girls.

I’ll think about what to do about Ms Tweedy / Cole / Fernandez-Versini / *no surname* / Tweedy  . If Dance Monkey is exonerated one of her songs could go back on in place of that haha.

But Baby's Coming Back is rubbish, not just boring!

If had my way put Kate bush running up that Hill in there

Dave starlight though that been list not lot big Dave fan in here

Gayle abcdfu missing

And cause bruno

^ No as long as we’ve considered the whole period we’re good haha. Similarly our earliest contender is from 1954 but we’ve considered everything from when the charts started in 1952.

Please can poll if everyone put we don’t talk about bruno on list

Oh yeh we can’t talk about bruno lol

Well this already proves that Bruno is only regarded the 3rd worst of 2022:

If we were going to put a 2022 song on it would be Abcdefu but we don’t think it’s quite regarded as bad enough. We’re only including 1/14 of the #1s in history so to say we have to have one from 2022 would be recency bias.

Dance Monkey being deemed simultaneously the best and worst #1 of 2019 is doing bad things to my OCD, but I'm resigned to it going on the list now.

I don't see there being enough for I Don't Care to be cut, although I'm unsure how Bag It Up got let off the hook in the 90s/00s round too. I don't think Loca People is a bad #1 (a WTF one maybe) so I'd suggest those to be switched back. I'd have saved Beautiful Girls as already mentioned, but the other changes are fine with me.

I suppose one issue we have here is that in the earlier periods you do have some sort of consensus built up over time of what was good and bad looking back. For the recent years you don’t have that to the same extent and there probably will be more divergence of opinion.

One radical idea is to abandon the shortlist for this final round and get everyone to just vote for their least favourite Number 1s, but I think we should stick with this format now.

I’m certainly not a Cheryl stan but are people saying we should have one of her songs on there regardless, rather than looking at them on their individual merit (or lack of merit) and weighing them up against other artists’ songs - because we should be doing the latter IMO.

Oh that's not what I meant. I'm just saying there was pretty strong support for one of the two to be included (more a question of which one rather than whether she'd be included at all). I think both of them deserve to be on the list on merit. IDC is the worse of the two for me. (I certainly don't think Cheryl's discography as a whole is that bad, those are comfortably her 2 worst singles)

I do have to say I don't envy you having to try and form a consensus here Julian haha.
