 16 29 427 Fun. (feat. Janelle Monae) - We Are Young

Just missing out on the top 15 is ‘We Are Young’ which takes a 14 places climb to reach its best ever position in it final year. ‘We Are Young’ failed to make the final for the first 7 years, it made the top 100 for the first time in 2020 where it surged from 314 to 47, it has then taken a series of climbs, last year to 29 and this year finishing its fun at 16. This is the second highest song not to have directly gone through to the final in its heat, in fact it finished in 11th place in the 2012 heat and then 2nd in its semi final. In terms of 2012, it is the 4th highest song from that year and it managed to gain 18 votes in total. Its good to see ‘We Are Young’ go out on such a high as it’s a great song and deserving of its finalist place.

 15 11 431 Dua Lipa – Don’t Start Now

Dropping 4 places this year to its lowest position to date Is ‘Don’t Start Now’. The song stormed its 2019 heat to make it directly into the final round, however is actually the second highest placed song for 2019 in the final round. A few years ago when ‘Don’t Start Now’ was out and dominating the top 10, I did think it would probably be one of the songs to challenge ROTD for the next decade, but it never seems to quite happen when we get to the final. It’s the second highest placed Dua Lipa song behind ‘Physical’ and managed to gain an impressive 21 votes, however despite that falls 68pts shy of the top 10. ‘Don’t Start Now’ is an instantly catchy bop it didn’t quite manage to get to the top spot upon release, however spent a mammoth few months in the top 10 and was the first song lifted from Dua’s ‘Future Nostalgia’ album.

Great to see We Are Young finish so high too - another of my very favourite "big hit" songs if the decade. Loving 20-11 so far, probably more than I'll love 10-1!
Didn't expect such a strong finish for We Are Young which was my +40 in the final *.* Wonder why it's only the last 3 years that it's made the final, but I didn't vote in the earlier editions so can't complain. Don't Start Now is great but I'm glad Physical is still to come.
I really liked 'We Are Young' at the time but I feel like it didn't really age that well so it feels odd to me it's one that only recently started doing well in ROTD!
'Physical' is hands down my favourite on Future Nostalgia but 'Don’t Start Now' was a fabulous opener to the era as well, shame to see that falling year-on-year so far

 14 6 433 Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers) - Get Lucky

Dropping out of the top 10 unfortunately, yet still finishing at a high we have Daft Punk. "Get Lucky" was announced as their big comeback single in 2013 and instantly became the biggest hit of the summer. However, it would prove to be their last as they would go on a long hiatus and then eventually decide they were done for good. The song also brought Pharrell and Nile Rodgers back into the forefront of the mainstream with the latter's legend status being further cemented. "Get Lucky" is a great disco throwback tune and with its timeless feel it is no surprise that it has managed a perfect run in the top 40. Hopefully, this can be continued into its final year next time and maybe we could give it a new peak to see it off too. As one of my personal favourites in this contest its continued success in this contest is great to see, finishing as the 2nd highest track from its year.

 13 22 433 Ariana Grande - Into You

Having spent four years inside of the top 3, it was quite the surprise last year when I announced it had dropped 20 places. However, it appears to have only been a fluke for the song as this year sees it rebound well into the top 20. "Into You" is the first of three Ariana Grande entries in the top 20, with "No Tears" and "Save Your Tears" still in contention for the top 10. Having received 20 votes it was the most voted-for song of 2016, however another song from the year out-did it in points. Assisted by Max Martin and Ilya on production, the song is a big dance-pop track with an impressive vocal performance by Ariana so it was never in doubt that the song would be so well-received by Buzzjack.

Glad that Into You has managed to bounce back up this year! Hope it returns to the top ten next time. Also impressed with Happier Than Ever entering in the top 20!

 12 27 439 Of Monsters and Men – Little Talks

Climbing 15 places this year to reach its second highest ranking is ‘Little Talks’ by Of Monsters and Men. Over the years, ‘Little Talks’ managed to make the final round in all but 1 of the years over the last decade. It has actually yo-yo’d up and down every single year ROTD has run and its run ends on a climb. The song has peaked in 10th place in 2016, but hasn’t quite ever managed to replicate that success, its hit 14th place 2 previous times and this year finishes its run in 12th place. In total ‘Little Talks’ gained 23 votes in the final round, which is more than 6 songs which have placed above it. The song has the accolade of being the highest placed story to not directly make it through to the final in the first round. In the 2012 heat it finished in 9th place and then went on to top its semi-final in order to make it to the finals. Everything above this point made it directly into the final from the first round. ‘Little Talks’ is a highly catchy song, not really one of my faves, but good to see some diversity in the top 20.

 11 07 447 Billie Eilish – Everything I Wanted

Just missing out on a place in the top 10 is ‘Everything I Wanted’ which drops 4 places this year. The song initially debuted at 52 before surging into the top 10 last year, this year however it did gain a lot of support but loses its top 10 placement. ‘Everything I Wanted’ remains as Billie’s highest placed song and for me is one of her best. I sometimes find her songs interesting to start with, but then fade quickly; ‘Everything I Wanted’ is an exception to that. ‘Everything I Wanted’ finished in 2nd place in the 2019 heat, however in the final round becomes the highest placed song from that year. In total the song gained 20 votes in total, it finishes 22pts behind the song at number 10.

Which means now just 10 songs remain; 5 songs were there last year, 5 have either climbed or are new….

Remaining Songs

Alan Walker - Faded

Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?

Ariana Grande - No Tears Left To Cry

Dua Lipa - Physical

Gotye (feat. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used To Know

Katy B - Crying For No Reason

Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky

Swedish House Mafia (feat. John Martin) - Don't You Worry Child

Weeknd - Blinding Lights

Weeknd - Save Your Tears (Original / Ariana Grande Remix)

Will never understand the love for 'Get Lucky' or 'We Are Young' - both haven't aged well at all imo

Happy to see 'Into You' still up high. Rooting for either 'No Tears Left To Cry' or 'Midnight Sky' to win as unlikely as that is!

Oh and agreed 'Everything I Wanted' is absolutely one of Billie's best! Along with the often overlooked 'When The Party's Over' for me.
I would’ve preferred ‘Little Talks’ and ‘everything i wanted’ in the top 10 over ‘Don’t You Worry Child’ and ‘Faded’, but I love the other 8 in that list, so generally good job BuzzJack *.*
Little Talks so close to a new peak! Still did amazingly well, sad that it’s the final year!
Great consistency for Get Lucky and Little Talks, the latter has grown on me over the years I've been voting in this.
Nice that Little Talks has managed to climb so much on its final year, a shame that Everything I Wanted has dropped out of the top 10 but it's still a really good selection in that top 10, Midnight Sky is the only one I don't like in there, and particularly happy that Alan Walker made it in!

That yo-yo chart run for 'Little Talks' :cheeseblock: Glad to see it finishing on one of its highest positions. Shame Billie has dropped out of the top 10.

Was 'Save Your Tears' not nominated last year or was it just not allowed to be nominated because it was more of a 2021 hit? I very much think of it as a 2020 song as my peak appreciation for it was as an album track oops so seems a little odd that is a new entry.

Agreed with Jade that Alan and SHM are big weak links in the top 10, there are a couple of others I didn't vote for as well but I do like them still. Mostly just pleased 'Do I Wanna Know?' continues to be so highly acclaimed here *.*

Save Your Tears didn't chart until 2021 so most people will associate it with 2021!

Oh yeah, for some reason I thought the start of its top 40 run was late 2020 but I see it was actually not until January - fair enough then. But yeah it was a #1 in my chart in March/April 2020

I still enjoy Get Lucky, but it's not something I ever really listen to now and feels like I probably give it fewer points in each iteration of this.

The top 10 is decent enough, a few I'm not into but can see why they're so high (Dua, Miley), but the one song that's popularity baffles me most is Katy B, absolutely bang average nothing of a song
