Meghan Trainor has had the same issue: a decent sized hit thanks to TikTok (not even close to Unholy though) and very little streams for the album tracks, which is why the album didn't really do much (#16 in the US, #67 in the UK).

I'm worried the same could happen to Raye with her new album and followup singles after "Escapism" :(

The annoyance of Tik Tok hits not reaaaally meaning anything long term unfortunately. I can't think of many cases where it's helped an artist out long term - maybe Doja Cat or The Kid Laroi?

^^ I think Raye has the feel good factor behind her though which will help (Treated badly by a major, came through as an indie queen etc)

Personally I don't understand why you'd release a hit single and then have the album sound nothing like it.

The single is what you are using to sell the album; and by extension yourself as an artist.

It seems beyond stupid and I would even say arrogant of Sam AND Kim to release a track that becomes a big hit that establishes them as hitmakers in a particular style and then to choose to NOT follow that up with anything that sounds remotely similar.

I wouldn't want to buy a box of chocolates from Cadbury based on a delicious new one they just put out and then when I open it find out they've given me sausage rolls!

I was gonna say, I don't think Raye will have the same problem as Sam. Apart from "Escapism" being a really brilliant record, she has a lot of good will behind her since it went to number one. I bet Polydor are kicking themselves they ever let her go!

thats the thing, unholy is a very kim sounding song so it fits her sound well - sam on the other hand not so much. its a great track but it does stand out like a sore thumb from the rest of their discography. i do with they did stick to the claims of the album being more experimental but after 4 albums of the same old style i dont think they're gonna change the formula and i think unholy was a one off purely due to the hype of the snippet

Half the issue is they spent months saying it was going to be their most fun and experimental album yet because they can finally be themselves which built up expectations and then it is kinda digestive biscuit. Saying that I do like Gimme.

I’m liking this the more I listen to it, but echo comments about it being a bit vanilla vs. what was being hyped. I’d say the previous album was more “fun” than this.

Hope I’m Not Here to Make Friends can be a hit!

The production on Lose You is very late 90's. Seems to be inspired by Waiting for the Night.

There is a remix for Lose You out today and its playlisted on Radio 2 but I don't know why they haven't given it a proper push yet. It's a smash waiting to happen.

Their show last night ended after 4 songs due to 'vocal issues'.

It really sounds like they have Long Covid or something. Really weird why their team and the media keep going on about their 'mystery virus'.

It's they/them

But yeah disappointing to see what happened with their show last night, feels very odd to do after three/four songs, I don't think I've heard of many artists doing that before?

I think Sam should reschedule or a refund should be offered at the very least.
