Perhaps now the press will realise what an unpopular, unsuccessful grifter she is. That was her last chance of relevance- noonre wanted Truss to save them from anything! :basil:
Seems unlikely. They've been quite firm on the line that the election won't be until the second half of the year for a very long time now.

I think what's more likely is the Tory party having another internal war after the presumed to be disastrous local election results.

I think they mean to be announced, rather than it taking place next week.

If rumours are to be taken with a pinch of salt, July is in the second half of the year.

Oh my I can’t wait for election night it’s going to be wonderful - wonder how many Portillo moments we will get 🤔

It's obviously not taking place next week as it's only held after 25 working days from the announcement. I still think we won't get any such announcement next week, we're looking at October/November.

Rishi will want to announce the election at his party cobference I think so it’ll be in October if he gets that far!

So Rishi has announced national service in the army or voluntary service on the Tory manifesto 👀🤣
Might help increase turnout of younger voters. What on earth is he thinking

The people this affects are too young to vote (in practise current 18 year olds will turn 19 before this comes in). However I think everybody understands this won't stop at 18 year olds if it's brought in - the net will gradually widen - many of these youngsters will be in the same position. Hopefully most people with children decide they don't want to send their kids to war.

He's trying to capture Reform voters who think current generations are too soft. He's also using this as a way to fill army and public service recruitment gaps which are down to poor pay, outsourced recruitment and . It's also only a multi-billion review which will likely lead to nothing.

So in the red corner we have extending the voting franchise to 17 year old and 16 year olds - empowering young people and trusting them as responsible citizens who have rights and absolutely should have a say in their future to affect changes that will impact on them, and in the blue corner we have mandatory national service for 18 year olds - exploiting young people to fill the gaps caused by the slashing of youth/mental health and other public services that successive Tory Governments have brought in 2010-2024 to bring down the deficit*

*Spoiler: public debt has almost tripled since 2010, debt-to-GDP has increased from 65% in 2010 to nearly 90% in 2024.

Btw, if you want to see what kind of impacts lowering the voting age to 16 has, Austria has implemented it for over 17 years now - officially in force since 2007.

16 year olds have also been able to vote in Wales for some time.

The National Service thing is bonkers. The youngest people on the country that had to do it are now 85 years old. Imagine living your life without having to do it and then deciding to vote to make sure your kids and grandkids would have to do it?

Yeah this is a bonkers idea from the Tories. Don’t get me wrong, I feel with the way the world is going over the next 10 years there’s going to be a push towards this, but what a terrible idea. I feel this is something under 50s need an exclusive vote on as it affects their children and the poor people who would have to sign up!
I just wish that there was a Yes Prime Minister clip regarding whether to bring back National Service which could be shared at this point. Unfortunately I don’t think such a clip exists…
