March 1, 20232 yr I feel like this will be along the lines of Evermore and Folklore, with Aaron Dessner as the producer. Ed has always had a good ear for melody and it sounds like the lyrics could be quite powerful, considering the things he went through this time last year, so I am looking forward to this.
March 1, 20232 yr ^What did he go thru? He posted this: I had been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be. Then at the start of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I viewed music and art. Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week I replaced a decade’s worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts. Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route to treatment until after the birth. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly, and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter. I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety. I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air. As an artist I didn’t feel like I could credibly put a body of work into the world that didn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is purely that. It’s opening the trapdoor into my soul. For the first time, I’m not trying to craft an album people will like, I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life. This is last February’s diary entry and my way of making sense of it. This is Subtract. So it doesn't sound like it's going to be an album of hits exactly, nor is he intending it to be (but admits his others were crafted that way). Edited March 1, 20232 yr by gooddelta
March 1, 20232 yr crazy to admit all your albums are tailored at what others would like. Sorry about his personal stuff and sure he has an ear for writing melodies but song lyrics is something different. Don't think he has the song lyric capacity to pull a sorta folklore/evermore. She is no Taylor in the lyrics department.
March 1, 20232 yr So it doesn't sound like it's going to be an album of hits exactly, nor is he intending it to be (but admits his others were crafted that way). Like when he pretended the Collaborations project had no promotion as if he hadn't hand picked the biggest artists in the world to duet on it.
March 1, 20232 yr I'm interested to see what he can do if he's really finally gonna deliver something authentic.
March 1, 20232 yr Awful about his wife, hope she's OK. I'll be honest when I say that musically I've not really been here for him since the X era (that and + are still his best albums for me), but if it's more in keeping with what he originally came out with I'd be prepared to give it a go.
March 1, 20232 yr I actually think an album full of folklore/everbore sound would work for him. But I just cba with anything from him anymore. He's very clever. Setting up for disappointment but when it becomes a hit he can be surprised coz "he never intended it to be one" or whatever and if it under performs (a risk for ANYONE on their 5th (or whatever) studio album) he can also say it wasn't supposed to be a hit and whatever else. The best thing is, I doubt this is going to sound TOO different to stuff he's released in the past/some album tracks etc.. We'll see though. I just don't think it's going to be that much different to the stuff he's given us already. EDIT: Also, it's awful hearing about what he went through and I hope he and his family are ok.
March 1, 20232 yr I'm so excited for this - Ed and Aaron working together is going to yield some beautiful songs i've no doubt. And so great to see him not wanting to release music only for commercial purposes, a bit like old Ed!
March 1, 20232 yr Like when he pretended the Collaborations project had no promotion as if he hadn't hand picked the biggest artists in the world to duet on it. That doesn't change the fact that it had little specific promotion. Collabs attract attention but he didn't perform on TV shows / award ceremonies to actively promote the album, which is obviously what he referred to. I'm not sure I'm super fussed on an acoustic Ed album but he is capable of great stuff so hopefully it'll be good. folklore and evermore weren't really my thing so that wouldn't excite me at all oops.
March 1, 20232 yr I’m sort of looking forward to him releasing something authentic and genuine, would make a huge change. I won’t hold my breath though as he’s never been more than average as a musician.
March 1, 20232 yr Author This is the album he did with Aaron Dressner (Folklore) as producer and of The National, thank you very much! ;)
March 1, 20232 yr Cautiously interested in this since + and x were two of my favourite albums around the time they came out, although he's lost me since and tbh I don't see myself being as into those first two albums if they came out today. Folklore however is one of my all-time favourite albums and I love Aaron Dessner's production style, so something good could come of this!
March 1, 20232 yr I enjoyed a few of his songs from his last album. Interested in this if it will be much more authentic/less chasing hits of an album. Although watch the lead single be the most single friendly song in the world.
March 1, 20232 yr I am looking forward to this and I’m personally hoping there’s some Damien Rice inspired tracks in there
March 1, 20232 yr This is so weird, literally a couple of days ago I was randomly talking with my mates about his album titles, being the Suffolk boy I am his name do come up a lot. I said it can't be long until he releases "Minus". I'm a wizard Harry.
